The hospital was built long ago, like the city that surrounds it. Outside the streets were built for horses and carts, they are narrow and twisting. Inside the hospital the hallways are the same, never wide enough for the modern equipment that must pass in opposite directions. But even odder still is that they may go up and down hill, the rooms being built at sightly different levels to one another. Whoever the architect was I doubt there was much of a plan ever drawn, the entire building has an organic and eclectic feel, even when the era it was built in is taken into consideration.
But it was not the construction of the hospital which was important rather the doctors and the nurses who made the patients better and to be honest there were no better doctors in the city thann the one employed by this hospital.
Doctor Jordan entered the ward. In any other clothes he would appear too young for the job, in board shorts and an old t-shirt he could be a surf-bum. At the end of Jayne's bed he paused to check the chart and then allowed his face to crack into a wide grin as he greeted her like a kindly older brother. She visibly relaxed and her face broke into a rare smile, one almost large enough to mirror the doctor's. They chatted about school, skiing and dance lessons while he checked her vitals one more time. She told him more than she had told anyone since admittance and throughout it all he never frowned or let his face fall in seriousness or judgement. Then with a flourish he pulled a penny from behind her ear, then another and another. Jayne squealed like the eight year old she was and then he was gone to another patient. If it weren't for her fractured leg she'd skip down the ward after him.
This was a man and a doctor whom the children loved. He had a ready smile on his face and his expression said everything that needed to be. No one was scared of him, but then again no one knew that this was only when he was with kids. When it came to adults or people who made life hell for others, no one could be worse than Jordan.
On a plastic hallway chair sat a child, legs kicking in the air, clearing the floor by several inches as they swung back and forth. Jordan was mesmerized by the red rubber boots on his feet and blue duffle coat, somehow the kid reminded him of Paddington Bear. His face had unhealthy look to it and his eyes were hard open as he stared at nothing on the wall. James stopped. The boy's legs weren't swinging in the care-free way he'd first assumed. Each one was more like a kick, sharp and pointed. He crouched down in front of him, letting the boy see his white coat and stethoscope and brushed his blonde bangs from his face.
"Hey there, I'm Doctor Jordan. What's your name?" The boy became still and was quiet for a moment, sitting further back into the chair.
"Ben," came out almost like an accident, spilling out of his drawn inward lips. His brown eyes lost their harshness, becoming rounder, more glossy. Then all at once his face buckled, his breathing stopped momentarily and tears streamed.
Any other person would have been taken aback at the odd reaction of the child but Jordan knew that it was not the case. There was something troubling Ben and he intended to find out what it was. He took the filled up form from the nurse and took a look at the clip-board. Ben had no problem or anything which was visible but then again kids did not tell or could not say what was happening to them. The only thing that his mother was saying that he kept on crying, was becoming violent and was hungry all the time.. And that meant, even after feeding him he was still hungry.
But that could be the symptom for a lot of things.
“Hey there bud…no need to cry at all….don’t worry…I shall take care of you,” said Jordan with a smile and the boy sniffled and his mother looked at him helplessly.
“Would you be okay if I spoke to your mother for a while? We are not going anywhere. Just staying round the corner. You can call her if you need, no worries at all,” said Jordan with his smile intact as he touched the boy’s knee and he nodded. He gave a watery kind of tepid smile and Jordan ruffled his hair. Children were a joy, they might be sick, they might have pain and they might throw tantrums but finally at the end of the day it all came down to how you behaved with them. Since kids did not have all the senses that you begin when you start socializing, it was easier to know the truth from them.
“So, Mrs. Pile…. I take it that Ben was in immense pain when you brought him here?” asked Jordan and the woman who was looking hapless nodded.
“He was kicking his feet in the air and was clutching his stomach and crying out so loud that even the neighbours came to check upon him. He is not being able to say anything at all and I am, I mean, I thought that maybe it was some kind of digestive issue but no…nothing of the sort…finally I brought him here,” said Mrs. Pile.
“That is a good thing that you brought him here as soon as possible. Now tell me something, does Ben have a habit of playing in the mud? I mean, garden or backyard? It does not look like he is in too much pain now…so does it come and go like this?” asked Jordan and the woman’s eyes widened at the question.
“Yes…it does and that is the reason that we thought at first that maybe he is tricking us or throwing tantrums but today, he went all bluish and I was so scared. But while bringing him here in the car he seemed a lot better. And yes, we have a backyard, he loves to play there…” replied the mother and that was all that Jordan needed to listen to in order to know what was wrong with him.
“I know, Mrs. Pile. I can understand what is wrong with Ben. But to be honest, you should listen to what is needed to be done and never allow him to play in the yard barefoot again. And if possible, then you need to get it cleaned as soon as possible. I mean, you need to do a pest termination of your yard,” said Jordan as he noted something on the form.
“What do you think that has happened?” asked Mrs. Pile as her eyes widened at his advice.
“I need to check him before I can tell you anything for sure…I mean, confirmation would only come after the diagnosis. So let him check him up once and then I shall talk to you,” said Jordan as he took Ben inside to check him up on him.
After diagnosis, Jordan’s fears were confirmed. Indeed it was what he had suspected…there was a tapeworm inside Ben’s intestine and it was festering and it had caused a wound which was the reason of the pain and the ravenous hunger. The food was not being absorbed in the body of the tiny tot. Jordan told the nurses to prepare for surgery immediately and spoke to the scared mother that despite of being in a serious condition, Ben would make total recovery. Only he had to be taken care of at all hours and his food had to be monitored. When the images of the tapeworm were shown to the mother, she cried out in fear at what had happened. The father also hurried down from his office when he heard that his son was going in surgery.
As Jordan said it was a successful surgery and the little boy was kept in observation for the night when Jordan finally breathed a sigh of relief at another surgery well done and went to open his scrubs and check his phone. His twin Jimminy had left him at least five missed calls and so many messages. Right at the moment he was not even bothered to check what it was with the myriad links that he had sent and he called,” Jimmy, I told you so many times that when I am in the hospital. I am on duty.”
“But you are not on duty, now, right Bro?” asked Jimminy, he knew exactly what ticked his brother and he smiled.
“No I am done. My shift is over. I shall be coming back in a little while,” replied Jordan.
“Good, as soon as you come though. I have a surprise for you. I think we may have found really what we have been looking for. I cannot control, I am so excited Bro. Just come back soon,” said Jimminy as he hung up the call.
“YOU DID WHAT NOW?????” screamed a positively furious Kiara as she looked at Pearl who was grinning at her like a cheshire cat who had done a marvelous job.
“I only did what you should have done. It is no point moping out for that sick sorry ass of a man who does not have the guts to be with a woman like you…you need someone good, just like you are babe. And even if not, then what is the problem in dating? At least you will be getting some hot s*x and that will take care of your needs,” said Pearl as she tried to reason with Kiara but she was absolutely horrified at what she had done.
“That picture is two years old and I was drunk when you made me wear that purple bikini and that sarong. Do you have no sense at all? I mean, really??? What if anyone from my office sees this? Huh? Do you have any idea what is going to happen to my reputation?” asked Kiara.
“Well the way I see it. You will be an object of pity that you are one whose marriage was cancelled and your fiancé cheated on you. At least if anyone sees you they will see a woman who is trying to take the reins of her life and live it by her own terms. Just like you should have been doing all these years instead of spending shackled up with that loser,” said Pearl.
“But Pearl? Really? In for a lot of fun? With one hot bod and maybe even two if the mood strikes?” asked Kiara as she read out the bio that pearl had written last night for her friend. Pearl laughed out loud at that and then when Kiara was glaring at her with full attention.
“Well what is the harm? I mean, you should be open for suggestions, isn’t it? You have spent all these years cooped up and now I think a threesome is going to do you good,” said Pearl and Kiara wanted to strangle her best friend just for doing that. But she knew that she only had good intentions in her mind.
“What if they are all stalkers and other kind of bastards?” asked Kiara. It was natural for her to think that something of this sort might have happened because she had never been on a dating site and look what happened to her.
“Then we will scrap that date and then move on to another. Simple as that,” said Pearl and Kiara sighed. Well with that kind of reasoning and logic it was hard to argue at all.
