12. My True Mate

1103 Words
Fang’s POV I knew the routine very well, I was a veteran at being in a Full Moon ceremony, and the main part was running with the others, letting your wolf take over and allowing your instincts to guide you. I knew that if my True Mate was there, my wolf would find her. It was part of his nature to look for its mate, and every time we ran under a full moon, part of him was focused on finding that scent that would guide us to her. Again, I noticed my father paying attention to Melissa, but I knew that once everyone shifted, he would be very busy with all his she-wolves. They always surrounded him during the runs, and would keep him occupied. Plus, he needed to guide the run and take us to hunt, it was his job as the Alpha and one of the jobs he liked the most. I lost track of where the rest of my group was, alphas, especially in their wolf form, tended to keep their distance or they started fighting, so I ran, getting away from them. I let my wolf take over, and went by instinct alone. Soon I noticed a magnificent scent that was driving me crazy. I stopped, focused on where it was coming from, and started following the scent. I found myself moving toward the fringes of the group, where I found a magnificent wolf I had never seen before. She was definitely an alpha, her wolf was big and strong, graceful in her movements and actions. I went to her and started playfully biting at her. She started running away, waiting for me to catch up before starting again, and I gladly gave chase, she was a prize worth winning. Our wolves were playful and happy as they ran through the forest, nipping at each other. It was a while later that we finally stopped, rubbing our muzzles against each other, getting our scents on each other. It was great, it was a high like no other. I needed to know who she was, I knew that she was my True Mate, and I felt like everything was going to be perfect since I had her. True Mates were supposed to be the perfect complement, your other half, the one that could make you happy like no other. I had a clear idea of the kind of person my mate would be, so I couldn't understand what was happening when, after I shifted back to my human, I stood there directly in front of Melissa. She was the opposite of what I expected, first of all, she was supposed to be an omega, and she was the one that had caused so many problems in the Pack. "This can't be happening," she said, shaking her head.  She looked both angry and as if she was about to start crying. "How is this possible?" I asked her, getting really confused. "You feel like an alpha, your wolf is magnificent, how is that you acted like an omega this long?" "Because I had no other choice!” she yelled at me. “I could never be myself, not with all the rules and commands holding me down. There has to be a mistake, this can't be happening,” she said, looking around as if looking for something, maybe an escape route? "Well, it seems we are True Mates," I said with a smile. It was like I was looking at her for the first time, she was so different to how I remembered her.  She was pretty and if she was an alpha then she wouldn't be such a waste.  Maybe it could work. "No, this is not true, you did something, or your father did," she said, getting a little hysterical, I could see she was losing control. "A True Mate is supposed to be your everything, your happiness." "We will be happy together," he said confidently. "You will be happy with me." "No, I know I can't be, not with you, not here." "What are you talking about? Our wolves can't be mistaken, True Mates stay together, they are happy together," I said, getting angry.  "You just want to keep your punching bag around. You want someone to humiliate, to boss around, but that isn't me, I won't be, not anymore. You won't hold me down, you won't hurt me anymore." She started to run away, still in her human form, and I realized she was doing that to stop her animal instincts to overwhelm her. To deny the truth of what we were. It took me a moment to realize what was going on, and I shifted back to follow her. In my wolf form I was faster and stronger, and I caught up to her in no time. I tried several times to stop her, but she moved away from me every time, sometimes even hitting me with logs or rocks, but I couldn’t bring myself to hurt her in any way, so there wasn’t much I could do. I started howling, calling for backup. Alone, I couldn’t cut her way, not for long, but with some backup we could surround her and cut her escape. By the time the backup arrived, we were already back at the clearing, and my father was there, his wolf towering over the others. He saw Melissa running there, and went after her, she stood firm, holding a thick branch, ready to defend herself, but she wasn’t strong enough to face him, so I jumped to protect her. I could tell my father was confused as to what I was doing, but my instincts were riding me hard, and my wolf wouldn’t let anyone harm her, not even my Alpha. Once I was sure he wouldn’t try to attack, I shifted back to human, still between my father and my mate, and after a few seconds, he shifted too. “What’s going on here?” he asked the both of us. “Why were you running?” he asked Melissa. “I’m leaving this forsaken place for good,” she said. “No, you won’t,” I replied right away. “You are my True Mate, you belong with me.” “Your mate?” I could tell that was an outcome my father wasn’t expecting. “No!” Melissa yelled. “Yes,” I said at the same time. “We are True Mates, we belong together."
