The Beta Jean looked at his mate, Eden who’d followed. She glared at him, “Don’t you look at me like that. You punish this innocent girl for doing things you should do. This place went to hell the SECOND Alpha Ezra came to meet his nephew. You fools bow down to his will and your fathers before him. Know this Jean….you EVER give my baby away…..and she’s not the only one who will leave.” I laughed, “He’s tried already.” Eden looked at me shocked. I said, “Both of them. They’ve had three marriages lined up for Addison and Sierra. They just can’t beat me in a fight to ship them off.” Eden hissed, “I HATE you Jean! I hate you! She’s our baby! Dax will NEVER let that stand. At least I know my son will change things here. You disgust me!” She turned and left. Beta Jean looked broken.
I offered, “You know…..you don’t have to make them hate you. You can be better people. I realize without a spin that’s difficult, but I’m sure you had one once upon a time. I mean...logically you had to be. Those are amazing women you have that you had children with. Obviously you didn’t suck at one point.” Alpha Edward said, “Would you just SHUT UP! For once! My mate HATES me. My son HATES me! My daughter HATES ME! Is that not enough for you?” I raised an eyebrow, “The better question is when it’s enough for you, not me. If I could do anything to have my brother in my life and to forgive me I would.” They both looked guilty for a brief second. I shrugged, “You both have the ability to change things with your families. You chose not to. Because despite both of your lack of spines…..you hold out from them even though that should be the hardest thing for you to do. You go against your wolves and your blood itself to not protect your pups and your mates.” Alpha Edward snarled, “For the last time, WE ARE PROTECTING THEM!” I shrugged, “So you believe. Really what you are doing is pushing away your family. Those men you agreed to marry Sierra and Addison to…..to be their chosen mates…..Do you know anything about them?”
Alpha Edward said, “We were told they were good strong men. With Alpha and Beta blood.” I laughed, “Did you even look? Alpha blood barely….and those men are KNOWN for beating women.” Both their faces paled. I nodded, “Yeah….so if you actually do care about your daughters somewhere deep down….you’re welcome from saving your daughters from two men in particular who are rumored to have killed their own fated mates, and the two chosen ones after that. Go ahead. Punish me.” I turned and got down on my knees. Neither man moved.
I could smell Booker coming. He must have grabbed the whip. I heard him grunting as he beat me. I gritted my teeth. Alpha Edward eventually said, “ENOUGH! Are you crazy?! She’s fighting tonight!” I snorted, “Yeah Booker….Alpha Edward won’t get his cut if I don’t win….which means you don’t.” Booker growled at me, “Watch your tone.” I laughed, “Or what? You’ll do….nothing. Yeah...I know.” I heard a laugh, “I see the feisty Melanie McAlister is still feisty.” Alpha Ezra eyed my body up and down. Beta Jean threw me my shirt. I pulled it on. Alpha Ezra snorted, “You’d better tell my great nephew…..I’m tempted to take her myself. She needs a stern hand.” I rolled my eyes, “You wish. I’d never let you touch me. You’re an enemy of my family. So is that piece of s**t who claims to be my mate….but we all know that’s a lie.”
Alpha Ezra growled, “Eventually I will find your disrespect annoying enough I’ll do something about it.” I shrugged, “Please do. Ask everyone around here how that goes for them.” Alpha Ezra snorted, “You actually think you could beat me.” I knew I could. I didn’t think I could. I nodded, “I do. I know I can. It’s not so much think I could. Even now. I could take you.” Alpha Ezra growled, “Your family has done enough.” I rolled my eyes, “Yes, how dare the allies of Blue Moon go after a man you didn’t even know was your brother. A rapist. A man who was keeping she wolves...PREGNANT she wolves and keeping them on wolfsbane. Yeah….harsh….you’re crazy. All of you are. How you don’t see the price of what you are doing….I’ll never know. You’re idiots….boy playing at the game of life. You should sit down and let the women play. No one can say we don’t have spines.” Brooker went to hit me. I broke his nose. I told him, “You can only hit me when I let you. Something you would do well to remember.” Alpha Ezra sighed, “I should just take her with me. You all have had years and she’s still spirited and strong willed.” I raised an eyebrow, “Try it.” I stalked off. Jerks.
Trevor was waiting with his friend. I groaned, “What do you want?” Trevor smiled, “I can’t want to check on my mate? You know if you’d just come to me this would stop.” I faked throwing up. I told him, “I don’t know why you’re lying about who I am to you, and I honestly don’t really care. Stop getting in my way Trevor. I have things to do, and they don’t involve being anywhere near your wet dog smelling self.” Trevor growled, “You should be happy you’re mine...You don’t even have a wolf!” I rolled my eyes even though my heart was full of pain about that. I told him, “No one should be happy about having you as a mate. Whoever is yours….god help her. We know it’s not me so just stop. I’m not yours, and I never will be.” My heart had belonged to my Xander since I was three years old. Trevor growled, “Alexander Conners will NEVER want you.” I punched him in the face, “First of all...He is an ALPHA and you will address him as such. Second, I never said anything about him.” Trevor laughed, “Do you think your letters with your brothers are private?”
I looked at him, “Do I think in this s**t hole anything is private? No. No, I don't. You know my IQ could run circles around yours.” Trevor growled, “I know you want that Alpha. Well, guess what. HE HATES YOU!” I refused to cry. I told Trevor, “So you think because he doesn’t want me….I’d just what? Jump on you?” I laughed, “Sorry….like I said….I’ll hold out for someone whose ass I can’t kick.” Trevor growled, “I have Alpha blood.” I snorted, “So you say. Lord knows I haven’t seen it around in any situation…..you hide in the damn office when people come here. Like I’d EVER be mated to someone who hides while his pack is under attack. When Caine takes over….he probably won’t even let you be a warrior.” Trevor growled, “I’m the future Gamma!” I laughed, “I doubt that very seriously. Caine and Dax don’t like you. Only these goonies you walk around with do. Caine and Dax fight with the pack while you follow your daddy’s lead and hide like the coward you are. Do you actually think Caine will name you Gamma? Oh that’s….you do, don’t you? You’re wrong.”
One of Trevor's friends, Axel spoke, “You used to be so nice when you got here.” I smiled, “Yes, well congratulations this pack managed to kill my kindness. Now, I just tell you all that you’re pieces of crap….which again...is mean to crap. I’ll have to come up with something truly awful.” Dax came up, “Mel...the fight.” Trevor said, “You know you can’t call her that in public.” Dax’s growl had them all bowing their heads. Dax said, “I am aware of what to call her public Trevor. We are in our pack borders. I am also aware you do NOT order me to do a damn thing. Leave Mel alone.” They scattered. I smiled, “My hero.” Dax laughed then sobered when he saw my shirt. He growled, “Damn….did my dad do that?! I’ll kick his ass!” I grabbed his arm, “No...I think they were going to let it go. Booker showed up. You know he hates me.” Dax growled, “My dad could take him. I don’t know why he doesn’t.” I shrugged, “He’s Alpha Ezra’s nephew.” Dax sighed, “I guess. My mom doesn't understand how Alpha Ezra even knew that. Alpha Ezra had the Ducant brother….which no one knew about. His other brother though….he didn’t come down here… I guess he must have though because we have Booker.” I shrugged. I didn’t really care.
Dax drove me to my fight. He asked, “I’d like to come in and cheer you on.” I frowned, “Sorry. Not necessary. I’ve got this.” Dax grabbed my hand, “I know who you are in there. I asked around. The Swiffer? Mel, when are you going to realize….your parents wouldn't have wanted this. Neither would Tristan….What would he say if he was still alive? I don’t even think Jason….and you know I think he’s trash…..would be ok with this Mel.” I looked out the window, “I make the most money that way. People love it.” Dax sighed, “That’s not why you do it. You let the pack punish you because of what happened. Then you walked in here and punish yourself some more. It’s been five years. When will you have suffered enough?” A tear slid out of my eye, “Never. They are gone.” Dax said, “I’d haunt Sierra’s ass from the grave if she did something like this. You let them hurt you.” I shrugged, “I’m always ok.” Dax pursed his lips, “Just think about it Mel. I’m tempted to drive to Red Run myself with Caine and give Beta Jason a piece of my mind.” I laughed, “I don’t know if they’d let you in.” Dax frowned, “I could go to someone I know who would listen to what I have to say.”
I looked away, “They kept Elise out of this. She’d have to pick her family over me. I don’t know if EJ knows either.” Dax rolled his eyes, “There is no way the pristine Conners family knows….ANY of this. Mel, your Alpha would not stand for this. Not this. Not to anyone let alone his mate.” I wiped my tears, “He doesn’t want me Dax.” Dax frowned, “According to your brother….who could be lying. Hell, from the rumors Caine and I hear….your brother is lying.” I looked up, “What rumors?” Dax told me, “Alpha Alexander doesn’t date. He’s waiting for his mate. He wants her. His wolf wants her. His mom would KICK his ass if he rejected you Mel. You have to know that’s true.” I whispered, “He promised Jason.” Dax asked, “Did he? Or did Jason just want you to stay away? Did he not want to anger a seriously powerful ally for what they did to you? You don’t even know if Jason did that of his own accord. The Alpha could’ve ordered it. You’ve seen that here.” I winced, “I can’t chance that, Dax. We have too much to do. People count on me. I’ll eventually go see my Xander.” Dax frowned, “I can pick you up after your fight.” I shook my head, “Nah, Sierra and Addison are coming.” Dax sighed, “I see you three as my sisters. I’m fighting all my instincts to let you walk in there.”
I laughed, “I know. We need the money though.” Dax frowned, “You would still get money. You don’t have to let them beat you up.” I nodded, “Yes, I do.” Dax sighed, “Just...think about it or I’m going to Alpha Alexander and Luna Elise.” I bit my lip, “I’ll think about it.” Dax smiled, “Good. I’ll hold you to that.” I smiled and walked inside. The guy on the backdoor grimaced. I raised an eyebrow, “Crush….you’re sad to see me? My feelings are hurt. I was excited to see it was you.” Crush pursed his lips, “Yes...Well, I don’t like when you fight. You’re better than this Ashley.” I shrugged, “We were all sold to this. We make the best of it.” Crush sighed, “I make the best of it. You punish yourself for your past.” I winked, “But I win.” Crush nodded, “See that you do.” I blew him a kiss and walked inside. The ringleader of the undergrounds hissed, “What happened to your back?” I told him, “What always happens?” The ringleader yelled, “This will not stand! I will call them right now!” I shrugged, “Knock yourself out what’s done is done.” He stalked off. The other fighter for tonight was locked in on me. He grinned. He could grin all he wanted; I was still going to win.
I went to the room designated for me tonight. I put on a tight t-shirt and some shorts. I waited for ten minutes. Crush came in, “You’re up kid….you don’t have to let him get so many shots in tonight….just saying.” I smiled, “I’ll make it entertaining. As always.” Crush sighed, “One day….I’ll get ahold of that aunt and brother of yours…..and they will find out why my nickname is Crush.” I smiled, “Just the aunt. Leave my brother be.” Crush rolled his eyes, “He doesn’t deserve it.” I shrugged, “He’s still my brother. I know that doesn’t mean anything to him, but it used to. For fourteen years…..he was one of my biggest protectors.” Crush shrugged, “The past means jack s**t. The present is what counts. In the present he’s horrible, and he’s not here when it counts. You two are what you have left. He should honor that. He should honor his father….who raised you; however, he does not. He spits on the memory of your parents and your older brother. I believe they would be ashamed.” I stopped in surprise. Understanding lit in my eyes, “You know who I am.” Crush nodded, “I do. I met your older brother once when he was with his Hackura friend. It took me a minute…..but you look like him.” I smiled, “Not so much.” Crush shrugged, “Maybe it was an educated guess and you confirmed it.” I laughed, “You are a smart one, Crush.” He made a fist. It was our sign. He’d put something in my bag. Something told me….I might be recruiting Crush for the resistance. I had an instinct about people. He was a good guy.
I stepped into the ring. People roared with applause. I looked out at the people around me. These people funded the ring. They were my enemies. They cheered and paid for the resistance too. They just didn’t know it. My eyebrows raised when Trevor and his friends walk in. He came every so often to see me fight. I could swear he loved and hated watching me take hits. I got into the ring. My opponent was cocky and heavy footed. The crowd cheered for him, but it was louder for me. Little did these people know how much I hated them. I did need them though. To tear this thing apart from the inside out. I shrugged. They would all get theirs one day. The moon goddess might let me down, but karma would eventually come for them all. They’d deserve it.
My opponent came at me. I dodged his first swing. The crowd gasped. Had to keep them on their feet. I was still going to let him get several shots in. My opponent whirled and hit me hard. I didn’t budge. His neck uppercut landed. I saw T jumping in front of me taking a shot to the chest. I saw Slade’s face as he killed my family. The shots kept coming. I saw my mom die. Then my dad. For some reason I always got a flash of Robert’s face. It had to be wrong though. He wasn’t there. Everything snapped back into focus. I swung my legs out and dropped my opponent. I did a kip up and roundhouse kicked him in the face. I punched him twice before going for the knockout. I walked to my corner and then the cage began to come down. The actual hell was happening? The ringleader shot me a sheepish look. I smelled Trevor. I turned around. He smiled at me. He was inside the cage.
The crowd booed. Crush was moving towards us, but he wasn’t going to get in. I raised an eyebrow, “Can I help you?” Trevor nodded, “You’re mine. You’ll be mine by the time you leave this cage.” I had fierce anger that came up from within me. I gripped my head. I could swear I heard something snarl. Trevor hit me. I put my hand up as he went to bite my neck. His canines sank into my palm. I screamed in pain. I kneed him in the balls and flipped us. I was at a disadvantage, and Trevor knew that. I was hurt. Badly. This had been his plan. It wasn’t bad. Which told me it wasn’t his plan. Probably Alpha Ezra’s. They were wrong though. I would only ever have one man’s mark on my neck. It was my Xander or it was nothing. Trevor snarled and came at me again. Another glaring sign he wasn’t my mate. He was trying to hurt me. A mate would never do that.
We fought and he’d bitten me several times, but not on my neck. I saw an opening and pinned him. I choked him out. The crowd was clapping but not like they would. Not even they approved of this. Several wolves in the crowd looked disgusted. Demons did too. That said something. They had fated mates or their chosen mates, Spears. It was always a choice though. Even the Fairies present had a look of distaste on their faces. The fairies were all about pleasures of the flesh. I’m sure it was the fact Trevor was trying to mark me they disagreed with. They wouldn’t have cared if he raped me. The crowd here sucked that way. The cage came up. I went over to the ringleader. I told him, “I hope it was worth it.” I turned and walked away. Crush grabbed me and helped me back to my area. The ringleader followed behind him as Crush took me to the doctor. The ringleader wrung his hand, “I didn’t have a choice….you see….” I told him, “You double my cut or you get outed. Specifically you. I have connections you couldn’t possibly dream of. Which will it be?”
He quickly agreed to double my pay. Too bad. Cayden would’ve LOVED this guy. He left. The doctor came in. He was a wolf too. He frowned. He muttered, “I have no idea how you are conscious.” I smiled, “Sheer force of will, doc.” He sighed, “That Trevor….he’s a disgrace to the moon goddess herself.” I snorted, “Not really an insult. She’s a b***h who can go die. He’s just a disgrace.” Crush laughed. The doctor gaped, “You can’t talk about the moon goddess that way.” I shrugged, “Why not? If she did her job...you and I wouldn’t be here. She can’t so she leaves us to suffer. What kind of sick mother is she? It’s a goddess's job to do the hard things. She can’t. She’s spineless and weak. She allows the suffering of probably millions of her children at the hand of a few sick bastards. She won’t get any sympathy from me.” The doctor sighed, “You always have such a way of looking at things.” Crush stopped Trevor’s friends from coming in. I snorted, “What else could they possibly want?” The doctor sighed, “Nothing I’d appreciate. No more fighting for you for the evening.”
After an hour, he was done. I got up and Crush took me outside. He gave me my bag and put me in Addison’s car. Sierra gasped, “WHAT THE s**t?!” I laughed then I winced. My ribs were killing me. I smiled, “Trevor got in the cage tonight after my fight. He tried to mark me.” Addison hissed, “Oh Caine will have his BALLS!” I buckled myself in, “Just get us home.” Lights were in our rearview. I cringed, “Who’s car is this, Adds?” Addison shrugged, “Oh umm….I’m not sure. I just grabbed one.” I closed my eyes, “They don’t know you’re in the car. Call your dad, they are going to hit us.” Addison said, “That’s Trevor?” She took out her phone, “Caine! Caine! HELP US!” She gunned the car. Caine yelled, “What’s going on?” I winced, “Call your wannabe s**t excuse for a gamma, and tell him he’s trying to run the Alpha and Beta’s daughter off the road.” Caine hissed, “TREVOR! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! DAX GET HIM ON THE PHONE NOW!” I heard Caine stomp into an office.
He growled, “Did you know Trevor was going after Melanie tonight?” Alpha Edwards said, “To the fight? He goes sometimes.” Caine roared, “HE’S GOING TO RUN ADDISON OFF THE f*****g ROAD! SHE PICKED UP MELANIE WITH SIERRA TONIGHT!” Alpha Edward yelled, “BOOKER! Your son better not TOUCH MY DAUGHTER!” I looked behind us, “Too late.” I threw Addison's door open and shoved her out of the car then Sierra. I was just faster than them somehow. I grabbed the wheel. I was thrown through the windshield when I was hit. I could hear yelling and tired squealing before my world faded to black.
It felt like my life was playing out on a screen in my mind. I sobbed when I saw my life in Red Run with T, mom, dad, and Jason. I studied my dad. I cried, “I look like you! How can you not be my dad?!” My heart felt like it broke all over again. I smiled when my first conversation with Addison and Sierra flashed in my head. Addison sat down, “So you’re not from around here. Are we normal?” I tilted my head, “Your parents' relationship is odd.” Addison signed, “She wolves don’t train here. We have a female lead warrior but she can’t fight. It’s just to say we have one.” I gaped, “I’ve been training since I was little to fight.” Sierra clapped her hands, “I knew it! Can you train us? In secret? Once you’re better? You look a lot better already.” I smiled, “Of course I can. It will be our secret.”
The next moment that flashed was the alpha telling the three of us we’d be working with hunters since we didn’t have wolves yet. I of course still worked with them. Against was a better word. I never did what they wanted. I killed the hunters and sent the omegas on a rotating basis to Black Mountain and their allies. The resistance came to be during my first month here. It started out with just Sierra, me and Addison. Dax and Caine were next. We’d saved Virgil, Valentina, and Paige first. They joined us immediately. Mason and Hendrick followed.
The moment I woke up in the Alpha’s office on my sixteenth birthday played next. I cringed. I watched myself sit up, “What? What happened? My wolf said I needed to fight and god…. my head….” I couldn’t hear my wolf anymore. My aunt spoke, “You didn’t shift. You have no wolf.” I frowned, “That’s not possible. I’m a Beta’s daughter.” Stephanie smiled evilly, “Your father was always up for debate. You not shifting proved Drake McAlister was not your father.” I punched her in the face, “Drake McAlister will ALWAYS be my father, you wretched snake!” The Alpha cleared his throat, “We have these for you.” It was painful to watch myself get those two letters. I’d memorized them. The first was from Jason.
Melanie,
I was hoping this didn’t happen, but it did. You have no wolf. You’re only my half sister. Your biological father killed mine and my mother. Along with our big brother. I can’t look at you. Ever. I never want to see you again. Before you think about coming back…. I told Alexander about your little crush on him. He promised me he’d reject you. You should’ve died that night. I wish you’d died instead of them. You have hunter blood in you, and I can’t have to be near my mate or my son. You endanger us. I no longer recognize you as Melanie McAlister. You’ll be known as Melanie Carter around here. You’re to be killed if ever found. Don’t come back here. Don’t make me see you die. For the memories of our family…. just don’t. I will send you updates because mom would’ve wanted that. Never call me Jase again. To you I am Beta Jason.
Goodbye
Beta Jason
I felt tears on my face as I watched myself cry. I opened the next letter. A letter I carried with me at all times
Melanie,
With a heavy heart I informed Jason you didn’t shift tonight. Our worst fear was realized. Your biological father killed my best friend. I have to protect my people and my pack. My sons and I discussed it at length. You are banished from this pack. You are not allowed in any of our allies territories. You will be put in any of our dungeons if you are found. Jason informed me you believe Alexander is your mate. The moon goddess would never allow a hunter and wolf to be together. Especially not Alexander. He’s not yours. Give up that silly notion now. I have requested you be punished for the death of my best friend and my son's future beta. Take it as you deserve. They are dead because of you.
Alpha Kyle
