Chapter 4 - Who Says Chivalry is Dead?

1650 Words
With such a burly appearance, the Reaper’s second-in-command Nicola had always come across as terrifying in the past. Perhaps it was merely a mixture of his massive build and incredible skill with a gun, who knew? But he hadn’t meant to frighten poor Alexa just now. Beneath his beast-like appearance Nicola was as gentle as a mouse. “Nic, come on already.” Luca called out from the driver’s seat once more. With a huff and ignoring Luca’s countless verbal suggestions, Nicola instead reached down and scooped up the featherweight woman in both of his arms. He proceeded to carry her across towards the car where one of the back seat door’s had been left open for him. “What the hell is this?” Stefano asked with a brutal frown creasing his darkened brow. “Have you gone soft, Nicola?” “Move the f**k over stronzo!” (arsehole) The giant cut him off with a frustrated tone to his voice. “You know this is a bad idea Nic...” Luca spoke with warning from his position in the driver’s seat. Using the rear-view mirror, he continued to watch what was going on in the backseat with intrigue. His gloved hands tightened nervously on the steering wheel. “Yeah, yeah. Just do your job and drive Luc.” Nicola quickly countered. In no time the unconscious Alexa had been placed laying down on her side on the backseat beside where Stefano was sitting to the far left. Nicola closed the car door and made his way around the car, getting into the passenger seat and closing the door. Seconds later the car was reversing out of the alleyway, turning off onto the main road and speeding off into the distance. As the car drove along with the three men seated and the unconscious woman they now had accompanying them, Nicola turned his head to the side as he spoke to Stefano in the backseat. “Stef, check her ID for an address, will you?” he commanded. “We’re working as Uber drivers now, are we?” Luca joked with a smile. He quickly flinched as Nicola gave him a backhand to his shoulder. “Hey... Ow!” “Just do it!” Nicola snapped, rolling his eyes. “Ok, ok… no need to go and get all physical on us, big guy.” Stefano huffed. Reaching out to grab Alexa’s handbag from the floor of the car’s backseat, he then lifted it up into his lap. “Don’t need to get your panties in a twist…” he added menacingly. Nicola merely growled, restraining himself for now. After rummaging around for her wallet, Stefano found the mystery woman’s ID and an address on it for them to drop her off. “Ah, here we are…” he announced, holding up her licence. “A Miss Alexa Daisy Myers. Oh Daisy, that’s sweet…” Stefano grinned as he continued to report his findings about this mystery woman they had just saved. “Let’s see, she’s twenty-five… hmmm… you know I like ’em young.” “Just give it here!” Nicola snapped sternly, holding out his large hand. Rolling his eyes and huffing, Stefano handed the ID over and slumped back into his seat. Nicola glanced down at the small card cradled between his massive thick fingers as his eyes scanned her address. “Luca, head North.” “You got it.” - Now with the knowledge of Alexa’s home address the trio drove her back to the safety of her condo, used her keys to let her in and placed the unconscious woman down onto her own couch. Stefano dropped her handbag down onto the table beside her as he glanced around at her living room. “Not bad…” his brows rose as he scanned his surroundings. “The girl sure has taste.” “Knock it off Stefano.” Nicola snapped. Together, they then made their way back towards the front entrance of the condo and closed the door behind them. And just like that, the mobsters disappeared back into the night once again… as if they were nothing but a distant dream. Alexa was left to sleep soundly for the remainder of such a horrible night, within the safety of her own home. She didn’t know it yet, but she owed these strangers her life. And soon enough their paths would cross once more... - As the trio continued along down the highway headed back in the direction of their boss’ luxury mansion, Nicola’s phone began playing an all-too familiar song from where it sat in the holster attached to the dashboard. It was Dante’s ringtone. “s**t, I bet he’s mega pissed about us being late.” Luca announced as he kept his eyes on the road ahead. “Yeah, well, what else is new?” Nicola added. Stefano was fast asleep across the backseat of the car, apparently unaware of the phone ringing as he snored softly in a continuous rhythm. With some hesitance, Nicola reached down grasping the phone with a heavy sigh and sliding his large finger across the screen to answer it as he held it up to his right ear. “Yeah boss.” “Where the hell are you?” Dante snapped, surprisingly calmer than Nicola had anticipated. “On the highway. We er… hit a little detour on the way back.” Nicola vaguely explained. “What detour?” Dante’s eyes narrowed. “Cobra thugs. Just a small issue to take care of, nothing we couldn’t handle.” “Cobras? Those low-life thugs don’t have the balls to make waves around here.” Dante pointed out before taking a sip of his bourbon on the rocks. Nicola could hear the jingle of the ice hitting the edge of his glass through the receiver of his phone as he pursed his lips tightly together. He was deciding whether he would come clean about their choice to intercept and save the woman in the alleyway or not. Luca turned to look at Nicola with both brows raised, as if he were silently asking if he was going to tell the boss about the girl and what had happened. Nicola finally caved, “Uh, boss… about those Cobras-” Dante saved him the trouble as he cut in over the top of Nicola’s sentence. “-I don’t give a flying f**k about the Cobras Nicola, just hurry up and get your asses back here… Now! Fretta!” (hurry!) With that came a ‘click’ as Dante hang up on his second-in-command, allowing for a sense of relief as Nicola slowly lowered the phone back onto the charging holster. He had been saved from admitting what they had done, for now at least. Leaning back into the passenger seat, Nicola noticed Luca was giving him ‘the look’ and rolled his eyes in preparation for what would come next. “What is it Luc?” “You know what!” Luca shot back quickly. “You didn’t tell him about the girl.” “And why does it matter?” Luca’s eyes narrowed as he frowned at such an absurd question, his hands clenched firmly around the steering wheel. “You sure as hell know why it matters Nic. The girl saw us, all three of us! She got a good enough look to ID us; she could go to the cops about what she saw us doing!” “She won’t.” Luca gave a sarcastic chuckle and shook his head. “Right, cos you know her so well… You two are buddies now, is that it?” Gritting his teeth, Nicola closed his eyes and fought the urge to start another shouting match with his good friend and trusted companion of over eight years. Both he and Luca had been doing this job for so long it felt second-nature. The violence, the danger; none of it seemed to concern either one of them anymore. But getting caught, that was another matter entirely. One he would deal with, if it ever happened to come up. “Honestly Nic, I’m worried you’re getting too soft for the kind of work we do.” Luca pointed out, turning off the highway. “It better not come back to bite us in the ass, that’s all I’m saying. If the boss found out what you did, that you just let her go like that…” His voice trailed off as he shook his head again, keeping his eyes on the road. “What would you of had me do Luc, huh? Kill the girl?” Nicola protested with his thick brows raised. “Would that make you feel better? Hmm? Would that help you to sleep at night?” “Sure as s**t it would, and you know it!” Luca shouted back. “Even Stefano here would have backed me up on this, if the prick weren’t too busy catching up on beauty sleep back there.” “Look, we have her name and address for now. If she goes to the police we can do it your way and keep her quiet.” Nicola pointed out. “You’re making this into a bigger problem than it needs to be.” Seeming to think it over, Luca went silent for a moment. The sounds of Stefano snoring from the backseat could be heard as Nicola rested his head back against the headrest of the car and ran his hand through his short dark hair. “This better not come back to bite us in the ass Nic, I mean it!” Luca finally announced, unable to make eye contact with his good friend. “I swear to god, if it does I’ll take you down with me man.” Nicola smiled at this and nodded his head. “Deal.”
