Leon P.O.V.
As soon as I left Sage in her room, I walked back down to my office and mind linked my Beta, Travis.
"Hey man, you busy?" I asked him, grabbing another glass for him.
"Nah, Farah just got in the bath. What's up?"
"Come to my office as soon as you can."
"Be right up," he replied.
I cut the link off and sat back in my chair, sighing. Something just wasn't sitting right with me about her story. And also being a human, something's definitely up with her. She has a hidden powerful aura around her and I know she felt those sparks too. Human mates don't feel those like we do.
Travis soon walked in, without knocking, and sat down in the chair across from my desk. He grabbed his now full glass and chugged it back with an amused look, while I was glaring holes into his head. And he knew exactly why.
"Still don't understand the concept of knocking, I take it," I said.
He scoffed. "It's one of the perks I get from being the Beta and also your bestfriend," he chuckled. I rolled my eyes at him. He can be so immature at times.
"So, how's Farah doing?" I asked him.
"She's doing really good, besides her legs and feet being extremely swollen. Seriously, she can barely walk right now. And we're only half way through this pregnancy," he sighed, rubbing his forehead.
"Well, that's good, just make sure she keeps her legs elevated."
"Ha! Yeah, I tried to tell her the same thing this morning and she damn near bit my head off. Literally," he said, shaking his head. I chuckled at his antics.
"So, anyway," he started, filling his glass up once more, "what's up with this rumor about two rogues being in the castle?"
"Word sure does spread around here quickly. Like a f*****g high school," I muttered.
"So it's true then?" he asked.
"Yes, it was an old man and a young woman. The guy wanted to trade the girl for a safe place to live, so I accepted. He is down in the cellars now and the girl, Sage, is asleep in the bedroom across from mine," I said, taking a drink from my glass.
I looked back over at Travis and he was looking at me as if I had gone mad. Which is understandable. He knows me better than anyone, besides my mother, and he knows I never do deals with rogues. So I just sat back and crossed my arms, waiting for his outburst cause I knew it was coming. And just like that, he stood up and threw his hands in the air.
"What?! Leon, have you lost your freaking mind? How can you let this girl in our home? You don't even know who she is! She could be a spy for that self-proclaimed 'Rogue King' or worse, she could even be an assassin!" He kept rambling on and on until my growl shut him up.
"Sit down right now," I growled and he complied. "Do not talk about Sage like that. Ever again." My tone was ice cold, causing him to flinch. He hung his head low and I almost felt sorry for talking to my bestfriend that way, but I couldn't just let him disrespect Sage like that.
"Alpha, why are you acting like this over the girl?" Travis asked me.
I sighed and ran my hands through my hair. I guess I could tell him everything, I trust him with my life.
"Alright, you just can't go telling anybody this. Not even Farah," I told him sternly. He nodded eagerly. Goddess, I can just imagine him now with a bucket of popcorn now.
"Dumbass loves drama," Killian chuckled.
"As soon as she set foot in the palace, Killian could sense her. Not only that, once we saw her he became very overprotective of her. That's one of the reasons I accepted the trade, I had to get her away from that disgusting rogue. Bastard even tried to hit her here, right in front of me," I growled. "And then, when we touched, we both felt sparks. Strong sparks, Travis. She's a human, how the hell is that even possible?"
"I have no idea, man. I thought that seer told you years ago that you didn't have a mate out there," he said it more as a statement than a question.
"Yeah, I know. And there's something not adding up about her story. Apparently, she was abandoned as a baby in the middle of the supernatural forest. But, she has never been allowed to leave before."
"So why then, all of the sudden, does that man bring her here to get rid of her and ask for a safe place to live?" Travis asked.
I didn't think about that. Now I know something is definitely not right. Killian was pacing in my head, causing a headache. I reached for my glass and drank the rest of what was in it.
"That's why I called you in here, brother. I need you to research all the children that were kidnapped about twenty years ago in the state of Washington. Then, I want you and Mike, or whoever else you choose, to go down to the dungeons and interrogate that old man and figure out where he came from and why he wanted to get rid of Sage so suddenly," I ordered.
"I'll get right on it," he said, saluting me. I once again rolled my eyes at him.
We stood up to leave, but just as I got up, I had to lean onto my desk. A weird feeling washed over me and I didn't know what it was.
"Leon, you okay there bro?" Travis asked, but I couldn't answer. It felt like I was underwater.
"It's Sage. We need to get to her, now!" Killian barked.
I rushed to the door and flung it open before running down the hallway with Travis right behind me. Killian was whimpering the entire time. Once we rounded the corner, we both heard an ear piercing scream coming from her room. I ran to her as fast as I could and damn near broke the door off the hinges. But once I looked inside, my blood ran ice cold.
Sage was on her hands and knees, blood was all over the sheets and on her back. I ran straight to her, crouching down and cupping her face. She looked back up at me with pain written all over her face.
"Sage, are you okay? What's going on?" I asked her urgently.
"I don't know," she said through her pants. "My back.... It burns." She was gritting her teeth so hard, I thought she was going to break her jaw.
I moved to her side and looked back up at Travis. He looked worried as well.
"Mind link the doctor. Now," I barked at him. He nodded and I watched as his eyes clouded over.
"Sage, I'm going to lift your shirt up to check your back now, okay?" She just nodded and whimpered in pain. I pulled her shirt up and gasped at what I saw.
From her left shoulder blade all the way down to her right hip were three claw marks. But what I saw happening next stopped my breathing altogether. As I was watching, three more claw marks formed from her right shoulder blade going down to her left hip. Sage screamed out in pain once again.
"What the fu…" Travis started to say right when Lola, the pack doctor, rushed inside.
She stopped on the other side of Sage, her eyes wide. She then looked at me accusingly.
"My King, have you done this?" she asked.
"What?!" I shouted at her. "No, I have not done this, Lola. Do not ever accuse me of something like this and do your f*****g job instead." I was livid. Killian was on the brink of pushing out and killing the doctor. I was shaking in anger.
"Alright, then, we need to get her in the hospital wing right away," she said calmly.
"Let's go," Sage said with a shaky voice.
She started to get up, so I gave her my hand which she gladly accepted. The sparks from our contact erupted and I heard her sigh. It must be alleviating some of the pain for her. She turned towards the door but I stopped her.
"Do you want me to carry you?" I asked gently.
"I am more than capable of walking," she said in a irritated voice, which surprised me. She sighed again. "I'm sorry, just please, don't let go of my hand." She looked up at me with those beautiful doe eyes and all I could do was nod.
"As you wish," I said after I found my voice again. She seemed surprised by my response and, honestly, I was too.
We walked out of the room and down the hallway to the staircase. Luckily, the hospital wing was on this side of the castle and just one floor down. We started descending the stairs rather slowly, so Travis came up on the other side of Sage.
"Would you need anymore help?" he asked her.
"I don't know you," she muttered. He looked at me with a surprised and hurt expression. I couldn't stop the chuckle that escaped my lips.
"He is my Beta, Sage. His name is Travis and he is Second-in-Command," I told her.
"Okay, thank you, Travis," she said, grabbing his hand.
I have to say, I honestly felt pride in how strong she is. Most girls would be bawling their eyes out, hell, even some guys might shed a few tears with gashes like that.
But Sage is different.
We finally made it to the hospital and some nurses ran up with a wheelchair. We helped her sit down and they took her off to a room. Lola walked up to me, pushing her glasses up on her nose.
"Alpha King, we're going to have to operate on her for awhile. Those wounds are going to need a lot of stitches since she is a human. I will inform you when we are done, but she is going to need a lot of rest. I have already contacted the witch doctor to see what the cause of this was, she will be here after we are finished also," she told me and then walked away.
I sat down in one of the chairs and ran my hand through my hair. I felt Travis sit down beside me and he slapped me on the back.
"Don't worry too much, man. She is obviously very strong. She'll be okay," he told me. I couldn't respond so I just nodded and put my head in my hands.
I made a vow to myself right then, I was not moving from this spot until the doctor was done and she was awake. Killian did nothing but whimper so I blocked him out and closed my eyes, while I did nothing but daydream about Sage. That's all I wanted, was for her to be safe and in my arms.
