Leon P.O.V.
I heard the shower turn on and I sat back on the bed and sighed. We had just finished eating dinner in my bedroom and Sage hadn't spoken a word since she brought up her parents. I had so many questions circulating in my mind, but I just couldn't bring myself to ask them. Maybe Aceso could help us in the morning.
I got up off the bed and went into her room to see all the clothes Farah had just bought her in the closet. I found a nice black cotton shirt and paired it with some shorts and then grabbed her underwear. As I was walking back into my room, I noticed Sage peeking her head out of the bathroom door. When she saw me, I heard her make a yelping sound and then quickly pull her head back in and shut the door.
I chuckled and shook my head as I made my way over. I knocked thrice on the door and waited. No response.
"Sage? I got you some clothes to sleep in," I said.
The door opened slightly, revealing a perfect little hand. I put the clothes in her hand and she then shut the door again. I sighed and sat back down on the bed. Killian was whimpering and I could feel his anxiety. Something just felt different, like there was something wrong. I closed my eyes as visions of Sage dancing erotically went off in my head.
The way her hips swayed and rolled was all I could think of. I felt a small smile tug at my lips as her scent invaded my nose. I could feel myself hardening at just the image of her, so I let out a breath and shook my head.
I opened my eyes when I heard the bathroom door opening. Sage came out and looked at me almost as if she was embarrassed. I felt myself frown at that look, she had no reason to be.
"How are you feeling now?" I asked her.
"Better," she replied, avoiding eye contact.
"Are you sure?" I asked for conformation, grabbing one of her hands.
She pulled away from me and looked down, her face turning red. I stood up off the bed and took a step towards her.
"Sage? What's going on, please talk to me," I said gently.
She shook her head, still avoiding my gaze. I took another step to her, which she met by taking a step back. We continued this until her back was pressed against the bathroom door. She was looking down at her feet and biting her nails. I took precautious steps closer to her and grabbed her hand, leading it away from her mouth. I stared at her for awhile longer until eventually sighing.
"Will you stay with me tonight? Please?" I found myself begging.
"I don't think it'll be such a good idea, Leon," she spoke softly.
I grew confused by her statement. "Why not?"
She closed her eyes and let out a huff. Then, finally, she lifted her head to look me in the eyes. Again, she had a number of emotions swirling around them. Pain, hurt, confusion, determination, but the one that stood out the most was longing. I wanted to just grab her face and kiss all these feelings away but I held myself back until she got what she needed off her chest.
"Because you're a werewolf, Leon. Not just any wolf, but the Alpha King. I may not know much about your kind but I do know about mates." I took in a sharp breath at that word, but I don't think she noticed. "I can't keep doing this. Each day all I'm doing is getting in the way for when you finally find her. I don't want to be heartbroken on that day and neither should your mate."
I stared at her and could tell she was holding back tears. Her eyes were glistening but she held them back with a determined look. I sighed and look down, closing my eyes. Her words were breaking my own heart and I could hear Killian howling with sorrow.
"You have to tell her," he spoke.
I nodded my head and looked back up at the raven haired beauty standing before me. I didn't say anything, just grabbed her hand and pulled over to the bed. She sat down and looked at me with her eyebrows furrowed. I sat down beside her and looked down at my hands, trying to figure out how I was going to put this in words.
"Have you ever heard of The Council?" I asked first. Judging by her even more confused look, I was guessing not. "The Council is made up by one person from each supernatural species. Werewolves, witches, vampires, sirens, goblins, shifters, and a few more to name. They've been around longer than anyone can even remember, their main goal being to keep some kind of peace between all supernatural species. Then there are the Council Elders, the ones who were they before the current members to help with advice and things like that." I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. I looked back over at Sage to see she was giving me her full attention.
"After my father died in a battle, and I took over the throne, my mother closed herself off. It's hard for a wolf to lose their mate, like a piece of their heart has been ripped away. She secluded herself in a little cottage a few miles south of here, but I would still visit her when things became to stressful or if I was worried about her. One day, she asked if I would take her to The Council. I wasn't sure why, but I couldn't deny her with the state she was in. So we went. Sage, have you ever heard of a seer? Do you know what it is?"
She had this faraway look for a moment before looking me dead in the eyes.
"Don't ask me how, because I honestly don't even know, but yes. I know what a seer is. They don't have eyes on their face, they're eyes are centered in the palm of their hands. And they live for centuries," she answered as if she was an expert on the subject.
I nodded my head and looked back down at my hands. I never would have thought explaining this to her would've been this frustrating or difficult.
"Well, when we got there, my mother asked The Elders if we could speak to the seer. There's not a lot of seers left because of hunters killing them off for their powers. What they didn't know was no mere mortal can handle their kinds of powers, the hunters were basically killing themselves. So The Council brought the last woman who was a pure blood from the first family line of seers. They gave her asylum while she helped them keep peace and track down all the hunters to stop them from continuing their onslaught.
Anyway, my mother asked the seer if she could help me track down my mate. My guess, she was wanting something to keep her mind busy and the first thing that came to mind must have been grandpups."
I watched a sad look overtake Sages features, and I'm sure my face wasn't showing anything different. This was a hard thing to talk about for me, so far it's been the worst day of my entire life. I sucked in a sharp breath and continued on with the story.
"The seer took my hands and asked for Killian to come to the surface, which he did. She hummed and moved her head like she was looking around, while my mother watched with hopeful eyes, until she finally stopped. She said she could not sense or find Killians other half, that he had no mate. We have no mate. From that day on, my mother has not spoken a word to me or anybody else for that matter and she hasn't left her cottage. I keep a warrior posted around her perimeter to make sure she stays safe. I guess all she does these days is garden.
I think she resents me now, not being able to give her grandpups or an heir to the throne. Can't really say I blame her though."
I looked back over at Sage and I noticed her eyes casted down. I would've missed the lone tear traveling down her cheek if I hadn't been paying attention. I quickly wiped it away with the pad of my thumb, causing her gaze to lock onto mine. I gave her a sad smile and looked back down, fighting back tears of my own.
"How is that possible?" she asked quietly.
"It's not something that's normal, but it's happened before. The Moon Goddess just thinks some wolves are unworthy of mates, I guess," I answered with a small shrug.
She took my face into her small hands and turned my head so I was now facing her.
"You are not one of those people, Leon. You are worthy of a mate, and so much more."
"Thank you. I'd like to think so too, but facts are facts. If the seer couldn't find her, then she's not out there."
"Maybe she's just really good at hiding?"
I chuckled and gave Sage a small smile. "Maybe."
"And I doubt your mother would resent you for that. Maybe she just needed time to process, have you even tried to talk to her since?"
"I have, but she blocks out everybody through the mindlink."
"I mean face to face. When was the last time you visited her?"
Sage had crossed her arms and was giving me the most adorable stern look. I couldn't stop myself in time from cupping the side of her face and giving her a gentle kiss. I could feel the surprise on her face and I'm sure she could feel the smile on mine. I broke the kiss and leaned back with a smirk, pushing her hair behind her ears.
"I'll tell you what, after I find a coven we can visit to help figure out your curse, I will go visit my mother. How does that sound?" She didn't seem too pleased with my answer by narrowing her big eyes and pouting.
"I have an even better idea," she started. "How about we both go visit after breakfast in the morning?"
I was stunned. She wanted to meet my mother?
"Before, you were saying we shouldn't get any closer and all that and now you want to go meet my mother?" I asked with a suspicious look.
Sage flushed red and looked away from me, her mouth gaping open and closed. My smile widened and I noticed she was trying to fight back a smile as well.
"I just want to be there, in case things do go south, I can be the peacekeeper," she answered with a ghost of a smile and a shrug.
"Sure," I said, rolling my eyes and chuckling.
She rolled her eyes as well and then hit me with a pillow. "I'm serious!"
"Yeah, yeah," I laughed, snatching the pillow away from her. "Now, I'll ask again. Would you want to stay with me tonight?"
My heart started hammering in my chest and I was getting worried of what her answer would be. Suddenly, two tiny arms wrapped around my neck from the side and she rested her head on my shoulder. Her thick curly hair creating a curtain around our faces. Sage looked deep into my eyes for a moment and then leaned in and placed a soft, lingering kiss on my cheek.
"I think I'd like that," she said, rolling over onto my side of the bed.
"Nope, that's my side. Get back over here," I told her.
"Well, it's my side tonight, Mr. Alpha King, so you're just going to have to deal with it." I could hear the smirk in her voice, thinking she had won.
"Show her who's boss," Killian said playfully.
I snuck up behind Sage, and then, very slowly, put my hands on her sides. I heard her gasp and tense up.
"Leon, what are you-"
She was cut off by my immense tickle attack. I wasn't even sure if she was ticklish to begin with, but now I realized this was going to become my main source of playful torture for her.
Her laugh filled the room, her giggles like music to my ears. She was trying every which way to turn away from me, but every turn she made, I found a new spot to attack. She was mostly ticklish on her back, so that became my main focus point.
She eventually gripped my hands and pinned them to each side of her head.
"You ass! I almost peed myself," she breathed out with a light chuckle.
We were both panting and with the position we were in, me straddling her and her holding both our hands by her head, I realized I was probably going to need a long cold shower.
Without thinking, I leaned down and kissed her hard. I licked her bottom lip and she instantly allowed entrance. The kiss was white hot and passionate, she never tried to fight for dominance, she let me explore her mouth while still kissing back with the same passion. I ate all of her soft little moans and whimpers, but once I felt her bare leg rub against my thigh, my eyes shot open.
I ended the kiss and jumped off the bed, trying to calm myself down and even my breathing. Sage leaned up on her elbows and looked me up and down, biting her lip.
I groaned.
"I gotta go take a shower," I whined. "A cold, cold shower."
As I made my way into the bathroom I heard Sage giggling.
Once I got myself calmed down enough, I exited the shower and walked out with a towel wrapped around my waist. I was planning on teasing her the same way she had done me. But when I walked out, I found Sage had dimmed the lights and fallen asleep.
On my side of the bed.
I rolled my eyes and, with a smile on my face, I walked into the closet and got dressed. I got in the bed next to her and stared at her for a few minutes, before getting comfortable and falling into the best sleep I had had in a long while.
