Leon P.O.V.
It's been three hours. I looked at my wristwatch and sure enough, it was already going on half past ten. Travis had already left to go take care of his mate and get some rest. I sighed and continued my pacing outside of the door where Sage was just inside. I could still smell her scent, faintly. It was mixed in with the cleaning products and other medical gear.
Lola did come out about an hour ago and informed me that they were having a little trouble with the stitching because some parts of the wounds were already partially healing, which just adds more confusion to her. I told Lola to just keep it between all of us.
I sat back down in the chair and sighed. Today's been one hell of a day, that's for sure. My eyelids were growing heavy but I forced them to stay open. I want to be there when Sage wakes up. I started thinking about all the events of this day when something peaked my interest.
"Killian," I said to him in my mind. He was pacing around too, also anxious about Sage.
"Yeah?" he replied instantly.
"How did you know something was wrong with Sage?" I asked.
He was quiet for a moment, wondering about it himself. I ran my hands through my hair for the millionth time tonight.
"Honestly, I don't know how. I could just feel it in my gut, I guess," Killian said. He grew quiet again, until he asked me something surprising. "Do you think, by some chance, she could be our mate?"
Now it was my turn to grow quiet. I can't deny, I wished that she was. But I couldn't get lost in doubtful wishes and hopes, the sparks we feel must be some kind of mistake or something. That seer told me years ago, there's no way she could have been wrong. Right?
"I don't know, Killian. Did you recognize her as our mate when we first saw her?" I asked him.
"No."
"Then, no. She's not our mate, we don't have a mate. Don't forget," I told him solemnly. I don't need him getting confused and acting irrational.
Lola finally came out again and I jumped up and ran right to her. She looked worn out and I could tell she was ready to go to bed.
"Is she okay?" I asked her.
"She's doing fine, Your Highness. She's still asleep and will need a lot more rest after this. I have to tell you though, most of her wounds have already healed up to just being mere scabs which you know is unusual for a human. The witch doctor is on her way as well, maybe she will have more answers for why that is. After she speaks to the girl, you are free to take her back up to her bedroom," she sighed. She handed me a small bottle and pointed at them. "If she has anymore nightmares, hopefully ones that won't harm her, here are some sleeping pills. They'll put her in such a deep sleep that she won't even dream."
I put the bottle of pills in my pocket and hugged Lola. I've known her my whole life, she had started as a nurse when my grandfather still had the crown. She even babysat me a few times when I was growing up since her and my mother were so close. That's why it made me so upset when she had accused me of hurting Sage.
"Thank you, Lola. I don't know what we would do without you," I told her truthfully.
She laughed. "No need to thank me, boy. Just make sure she comes back after breakfast in the morning so that I can change her dressings."
"Sure will," I replied, walking over to the door to go inside.
"Oh, and Leon," Lola said, stopping me midway. I turned and looked at her, she had a smirk on her face. "She really is a beautiful girl. Don't do anything stupid," she warned. I nodded and made my way inside the dimly lit room.
Sage was laying there, asleep. She looked so peaceful and innocent. Her hair had been put up in a loose bun, causing some stray strands of hair to fall around her face. Her lips were slightly parted and she was snoring ever so lightly. Thankfully, she wasn't hooked up to any machines so there were no annoying beeping sounds.
I grabbed the chair and pulled it to her bedside. Just out of mine and Killians curiosity, I grabbed her hand. The sparks that came through were just as strong as before. I felt my eyebrows furrow. Confusion soon struck me as well. Maybe the witch doctor can help me understand this as well. I looked back down at her sleeping face and felt my heart flutter.
"Who are you?" I murmured, more to myself. I felt her squeeze my hand lightly and snapped my gaze towards her. Her eyes slowly opened and met mine instantly.
I was worried she would freak out cause, here I am, someone she barely knows, holding her hand and talking to myself. She gave me a small smile which calmed me down. She took her hand out of mine, causing it to grow cold, and sat up in the bed.
"How are you feeling?" I asked her.
She scrunched up her nose and chuckled. "I've been better." I, too, chuckled at her response.
"I'm sure. Would you like anything? Maybe some water?" She nodded and rested her back against the pillows.
I got up and made my way over to the minifridge they kept in all the rooms and pulled out a small bottle of water. She opened it and drank it all rather quickly, licking her lips to moisten them. I couldn't help but stare at her lips.
"Oh my Goddess, she's going to kill us," Killian groaned. I chuckled at his statement.
Just then, there was a small knock on the door. Aceso opened the door slightly and smiled at us. She came in and shut the door behind her. I sat back down in my chair and Sage looked at me confused.
"Sage, this is our witch doctor, Aceso. Aceso, this is Sage. She's going to help try to figure out exactly what happened to you," I told her. She looked back and forth between us for a few minutes before her gaze finally settled on Aceso. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her eyes narrowed towards Aceso.
"Aceso?" she asked.
"Yes, that is my name," Aceso responded with a smile.
There was a moment of silence before Sage spoke again, and what she said surprised the hell out of me.
"You're not really a witch doctor." Aceso looked surprised for a second but soon had an amused look on her face.
"I'm guessing you know more about me than I had originally thought," Aceso chuckled, sitting on the edge of the bed.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"She's correct. I am no witch doctor," Aceso said with a smile. But this only made me angry.
"What the hell do you mean, Aceso? You've been with my family living under false pretenses for centuries?! Just who in the hell are you, really?" I growled dangerously. But both these girls just had smiles on their faces.
"I think I shall let the young lady explain," Aceso said, gesturing towards Sage.
I looked back and forth between them like they had both gone crazy. But soon, Sage had her hand on mine, calming me down somewhat, and leaned over to tell me.
"Leon, she is kind of like a doctor, but she most certainly is no witch. She is a Goddess," Sage said with such confidence, I was taken aback.
I could feel my mouth gaping open and closed like a fish, causing both the women to laugh.
"Yes, I am the Goddess of the healing process," Aceso said proudly, puffing her chest out a little.
"But why didn't you tell any of us?" I asked her.
"No point to, all your family needed to know was that I was here to help. And I was never the one that said I was a witch, that was all your great-grandfathers doing."
To say I was surprised would be an understatement. How could I not know this but Sage did? I looked over at her and she had a proud smile blessing her beautiful face. I couldn't help but smile with her. Has she ever felt this way before, proud? She looked back at me and her smile widened. Her eyes were big and curious. She truly was breathtaking. Our moment was soon broke when Aceso cleared her throat.
"You know," she started, "you are the first person in centuries to know my true identity. I hope my secret stays safe with you two."
"Oh, of course!" Sage exclaimed. "I don't know anybody other than Leon anyway, so your secret is safe with me," she grinned.
"Good. Now, let's get to work. I need you to lay back and relax, as best you can, and tell me exactly what happened while you were asleep."
I helped rearrange the pillows behind Sage so she wouldn't put too much pressure on her back. She laid back and looked up at me with those sparkling eyes.
"Thank you," she said softly. I only smiled in return. I honestly didn't trust my voice.
Aceso moved behind the bed and looked down at Sage with a heartwarming smile.
"Now Sage, I need you to close your eyes and think about every single detail of the dream you had," Aceso said.
"Okay," Sage said, closing her eyes. Aceso placed one hand right above Sages forehead and the other just above her chest. "It started with darkness. I kept turning around and around but I couldn't see a thing, the only thing that was somewhat visible to me was the shallow water I was standing in. Then, out of nowhere, I felt someone or something. It made me uneasy so I started running. All I could hear was the water splashing underneath me but I was sure that someone was following me, chasing me. And then, I was stuck. I couldn't move a muscle, let alone even blink. That's when I heard the voice. It was a womans voice and she just kept on repeating 'You're supposed to be dead.' Eventually, the voice started screaming it and I started breathing heavily and then it felt like my back was being burned. I fell to my knees and shut my eyes tight and the next thing I know, Leon and his friend were rushing into the room. I don't even know when I woke back up. All I knew was that my back was burning. And here we are now."
Sage finished reliving the nightmare and I watched as Aceso scrunched her face up every now and again. Finally, Aceso sighed and put her hands down while Sage opened her eyes back up. I helped her to sit back up in the bed and we watched as Aceso walked around to sit on the edge of the bed once again.
"I want you both to realize this, what I am going to tell you now is all that I know. I don't have all the details to this," Aceso said, avoiding our gaze.
Sage and I both looked at each other with pure confusion. I could sense the worry coming off of Sage, so I grabbed her hand and squeezed lightly. She didn't reject it, which caused Killian to howl with joy.
"What is it, Aceso?" I asked.
She took a deep breath and met our eyes, finally. "Sage, dear girl, you have a curse placed upon you."
Sage gasped loudly and looked down. There's no way someone cursed her, why would anybody want to?
"Aceso, I've never met anybody in my entire life and I'm positive the person I was living with couldn't have done that. Are you sure I'm cursed?" Sage asked, nervously.
"I am more than sure. This curse is almost as old as you are. It's aged like a fine wine, and whoever it was you heard in your dream was the one that cursed you. Think of it like a thread connecting you to this woman. The thread can be cut, by an actual witch doctor that is, but it won't lift the curse. My opinion, go see a Shaman or Medicine Man and they will be able to cut the thread for you. As for figuring out what kind of curse this is, I suggest going to a coven and speaking to their Elders. They should be able to help you."
I was angry. No, I was f*****g livid. This just adds more mystery to her past but what made me even more angry, Sage had no idea of any of this s**t. She and I and everybody else just thought she was a normal human girl. But, I'm coming to learn, there is nothing normal about this beautiful girl sitting in front of me.
"Thank you," Sage said after a long minute of silence.
"It's okay, sweet girl, anything I can do to help." Aceso got up to leave, but then chuckled and turned back towards us. "You know, it's kind of funny having a name like yours and being cursed."
"What do you mean?" Sage asked.
"Sage is an herb, used by mainly witches, to clear out negative and bad energy. And I'm starting to get the feeling you were named this for the same reason. It was nice meeting you, Sage. Hopefully, we can meet again in different circumstances." With that, Aceso walked out and shut the door behind her.
Sage was squeezing my hand so hard, if I wasn't a wolf she would be breaking it. I started rubbing her knuckles, trying to soothe her. She looked over at me with her eyebrows furrowed together.
"I just don't understand," she whispered.
"It's okay, I promise we will get this all figured out. Come on, let's get back up to bed," I said, standing up. She nodded and got out from under the covers.
We walked in silence back up to her room. I ran in my room and got her another shirt of mine and some boxers to sleep in. She quietly took them and got changed in the bathroom. I looked around and noticed that someone had come in changed the bloody bedsheets while we were gone. I would have to thank Travis for that later.
Sage came back out and I helped her to get in the bed. I felt bad for her, not knowing anything about her own life. She looked so upset and worried, I didn't really want to leave her.
"I'll be just across the hall, if you need anything just yell for me, okay?" I said as I started making my way to the door.
"Wait!" Sage yelled, grabbing my hand. Her face turned red and she put her head down embarrassed.
"What is it?" I asked her, gently.
"I was just, um, wondering if you would maybe mind if, uh, if you could stay here tonight? Just until I fall asleep maybe." She whispered the last part and I could tell she was nervous.
I took her chin and lifted her face up so I could look her in the eyes. I smiled and nodded my head at her and watched as her eyes lit up with gratitude.
"Of course I will."
She laid back down in the bed and I sat on the other side, watching her. Eventually, her breathing evened and I heard her light snores again. I smiled and laid my head on the backboard. This mystery girl is taking over every aspect of my life, and I love it.
