“Azura showed up crying, because she found out her girlfriend had been cheating on her for a while now. We are close and were talking about things. Well then the stupid b***h had to call Azura and she couldn’t take it. She was trying to leave, but Taylor and I were trying to stop her. She wasn’t sober. In fact, she was so drunk she could barely walk. She hit the light pole on her way out and then hit another car as she tried to get onto the main road.” She had to take a deep breath to slow her breathing and heart rate down. “Maya, she isn’t okay. You need to find her!”
“I will. Let me get off the phone and I will find her.”
First thing I did was call Azura’s phone. I have never prayed so hard for someone to answer the phone. Within a few rings, my prayers were answered.
“Mayya,” she said. “I fu fu fuckked up,” she was stuttering heavily.
“I know. I need to know where you are!” I shouted into the phone. Any form of calm had evaporated the moment I heard how drunk she was.
“Mayya, I jussssst rrruined mmmmy lllife.” She began sobbing.
“Azura, I need to know where you are right now!”
“I’m over by the Evening SSSStar. My si si sisssster isssss comingggg.” She managed to slur out.
“Do not move. I am coming! And don’t you hang up until I get there. You hear me?”
“Hear youuu.” She began sobbing again.
I was sad that she was crying, but at least I knew she was conscious. Finding her wasn’t difficult. Right as I arrived, another car pulled up. By the looks of the woman that jumped out of the car, it had to be her sister.
She came running over to us. “What is the damage?” Her sister asked.
“She is f****d up royally. She is so drunk I can barely understand her. We need to get her into my car. Then I need you to take the vehicle elsewhere. Not so out in the open. I would imagine the police are looking for her.”
Her sister looked up at me and asked, “Where are you taking her?”
“I can’t tell you that. Just trust me please. You will hear from me in a few days.” She nodded and we went our separate ways.
As I drove down the road, I had to grab a bag for her to throw up in. She missed and hit the carpet mostly. That was of the smallest concern to me. I had to get here somewhere quick. Azura would lose her RN Licensing if she was convicted. I have done plenty of stupid things in my life, but this was going to take the cake.
I called the one person I knew who would be able to help me. Anton, my best friend of 15 years, would be able to help. He had connections everywhere. He wasn’t the most law-biding citizen, but at this moment in time, I was thankful.
It didn’t ring very long before he answered, “Hey dude. What’s up?”
“Anton, I need your help.”
“This sounds bad. What’s wrong?” His voice was full of alarm.
I explained what happened and that I needed help hiding her until the cops stopped looking.
“You know I got you. Bring her to 1243 Wenandy Road. We will keep her here until things blow over. Make sure you go back around. I will be there shortly.”
I pulled over in a dark alley and turned off my phone and Azura’s phone. When we got closer to our destination, I parked my car on the road and walked in using the dark alleyways. People would notice us if I took us along the main road.
We made it to the back of the house relatively unnoticed. The house was so old there was no plumbing. To anyone else, the house looked empty, but I knew there were people in the basement. That’s where Anton did a lot of his illegal work.
I was trying to get Azura down the stairs when Anton showed up. He attempted to help me.
“You have some explaining to do when we get her set up in the room.” He looked at me. I knew he wasn’t happy about what I was doing, but once I explained it, I knew he would understand.
I nodded.
Safely, we made it down the steps and got Azura set up in a cute little room just off of the main area. She was asleep within seconds. Finally, a moment to breathe, I was able to arrange my thoughts.
“Come on. Let’s get a drink and talk,” Anton said to me.
I followed him to another small room off of the main living area. Without speaking, I sat in one of the kitchen chairs while Anton sat in the other one across from me.
“Alright spill.” He handed me a glass with a dark liquid in it. From what I could smell, it was sweet. Before beginning, I took a deep swig. The amber liquid hit my tongue and warmed my insides as it slid down my throat.
“She is one of my employees. Over the last few weeks, I have noticed that something was bothering her. I tried talking to her about it and got nowhere. Well, I got a call from the staff tonight about her multiple hit and runs. Anton, she just got her RN license. This will ruin her career!”
“Maya, you don’t have to defend yourself to me. I will help you with anything. You never call me for the spicy stuff. So I'm just surprised.” He stared at me as if trying to see into my soul. “Why her?”
To be honest, I didn’t know why. I just felt a connection with her that I couldn’t get past. “I don’t know, dude. I think it's because I feel like I need to protect her.”
He nodded his head and took a deep drink of his drink. Knowing him, it was whiskey.
We sat and talked a while until Anton finally told me to head home. I couldn’t though. This was a foreign place to her, and she probably won't remember what happened. Anthon gave me bedding to crash on the couch in the living room. He had his men stay close by in the case we somehow got tracked there.
I saw her face in my mind, as sleep consumed me.
