Opus X

Chapter 1

Thank you so much for not only reading this latest book in the OPUS X story but these author notes in the back as well.

I live in Nevada, and in my last author notes, I mentioned it was dry. I did mention that, didn"t I? Well, it still is! You people on the East Coast getting two feet of snow and much rain, please send some our way.

In other news, the election is over, covid rates are rising, and the world is unsettled in general. That"s another way of saying it"s still 2020. The good news? As of today, the US has not one but two approved vaccines, and we have started our tiered vaccination program. I just hope our small business owners (retail, service, and food service) and the many people who have been affected by this, like those who lost their jobs, can hang on until some semblance of normality returns—and that those who are going to get the vaccine hang on until that needle hits their arm.

Here"s to those I just mentioned—I"m raising my bottle of Mexican Coca-Cola in a toast to your strength!

Oh, I did read about some good news the other day. Turns out we can"t accidentally destroy the universe, at least not by going back in time. "The past is obdurate," Stephen King wrote in his book about a man who goes back to prevent the Kennedy assassination. "It doesn"t want to be changed." He might be right.

After careful analysis, researchers at the University of Queensland have determined that even if you made a change in the past, the timeline would essentially self-correct, ensuring that whatever happened to send you back would still happen. If you went back and stopped someone from being infected as patient zero, you might become patient zero instead, for example.

In other words, whatever was going to happen will happen, just not in the same way.
