Blair sat her hindquarters down, her ears sagged, she felt no different, it means Maikah really was just a voice in her head.
"Blair?" Wolfe asked seeing her down face.
Blair looked at the werewolf who stood off to her left, his brown fur had a shimmer to it in the moonlight, it made him seem impressive more than he's given credit for.
"I'm, alone..."
Wolfe's ears dropped.
"I mean, I didn't mean it like that..." She said quickly.
"No, I understand, Maikah taught you everything you know right?"
"Yes, I realised I'm still just a girl Wolfe, I have these amazing abilities, but, I'm still just a girl... And I'm afraid"
He took a deep breath "Well, for what it's worth, I'll be there for you Blair, I might still also be a boy, but the two of us can figure things out, am I right?"
She produced a smile "Yes, I guess"
"Then hear me Blair, I will protect you, you gave me a chance to be... Uh, slightly more normal..." He said scratching his head making her laugh.
"So, I will make sure nothing harms you, even if it costs me my life"
Her eyes grew wide "That's too selfless, you don't have to risk your life for me"
"I will, I'm not doing this to impress you Blair, but I get this feeling you have a world of problems on your shoulders, and I'll lighten the load a little for you ok?"
She nodded "Thank you Wolfe, I'm glad I met you"
He sat down "Ok, so I never really paid much attention in class when it came to history, but for some dumb reason I couldn't get enough of Cherokee folklore, so here's what I know..."
She shifted her position to face him.
"I'm not sure where the werewolf falls in, but next to that, concerning the dog family is the Devil dog..."
Blair's head tilted "Devil, dog?"
Wolfe scratched his head again "Understand this, I'm not sure if these things will ever become a reality for us, but f**k, if the slope-eyed giant is here, I'll spill everything I know, for in case we run into them"
"Ok then?"
"The devil dog is presumed to walk in packs of about four to six, there are no confirmed reports about these things killing humans, but I know there are major reports of the things killing Coyote's" He shrugged "If I can find one alone, I recon I can kill one of the bastards, but since it's rumored to be a pack animal, we should stick together on that one"
Blair nodded, thinking of how Maikah said she can give the gift of the wolf to another human, maybe she should consider it.
"You keeping up?" He asked.
"Yeah, sorry, you may continue"
"I feel like a lecturer" He said embarrassed.
"No! Well, a werewolf lecturer hey?" She said and giggled "If it makes you feel more comfortable, I learned all I know from a talking wolf..."
Wolfe looked back at her "You're right, it sounds odd doesn't it?"
They both laughed.
"Are there any, you know? Scarier things than this devil dog??" She asked.
"Well, there is the Hellhound"
"Hell... Hound?"
He brushed his head "All folklore in my mind Blair, but if that thing, even the devil dogs are real, I'd fear them the most, the Hellhound is a loner, some say it will move two in a pair, but it's big, it's shoulders about as high as yours now"
Blair stood on her all fours then measured in her mind how big this hound would be next to her.
"It's, huge"
"Not 'the' biggest, after I've seen what you can do, but pretty darn big"
She looked at him, Wolfe saw fear in her eyes.
"Blair! You can become this gigantic wolf!? You shouldn't be afraid of them!"
"I realised in that form my strength is great, but I won't keep up with something like a Hellhound, or even you Wolfe, you can defeat that big wolf form if you had the right resolve"
"How!? It's impossible!?"
"Speed, you can s***h at my legs to cripple me, then when I'm down you can go for other vital areas, like my gut, or my neck, tendants? My back? That big wolf form is only good against something similar to it's size, I need to fight something like the Hellhound in this form" Blair looked down at her paws, she was nowhere near as high from the ground, and it had her morale equally as low.
"Well..." Wolfe took into account what she said, it made sense, and it had him worried too "Ok, let's forget about those things for now, what do you say?"
She looked up from her paws "Forget?"
"Yes, let's just relax, I'm hungry, why don't we go hunt something to eat? Maikah said she will meet us on the next full moon right? Then we decide what to do next from there"
Blair licked her lips, she could also eat "Ok then, let's head out" She said trying to conceal her worry.
They set off and eventually hunted down an elk for each of them, as they ate Blair couldn't help ask again "Are there more?"
Wolfe swallowed and looked up "More?"
"More creatures you know of?"
He gave it thought "Uh... Are you sure you want to hear about more scary creatures that we actually 'may' face some day"
"Well, better be prepared right?"
"Ok then, there is, a Raven... Something..." He thought "Raven mocker"
"Raven mocker? That doesn't sound scary?"
Wolfe cleared his throat "I warned you... The Raven Mocker, or Kalanu Ahkyeliski, I think I'm saying it right, is an evil spirit and the most feared of Cherokee witches, that's what I heard they're called.
According to Cherokee myth it robs the sick and dying of their heart. Normally appearing as old, withered men and women, or turning completely invisible except to certain medicine men, I recon those are shamans, they take to the air in a fiery shape, with the sounds of a raven's cry and a strong wind as they hunt for their next victim" Wolfe paused to watch Blair, she seemed to try and picture this thing in her head.
"After tormenting and killing their victim by slitting the victim's head they consume his heart, doing so without leaving a mark on the victim's skin apparently and add a year to their life for every year that the slain would have still lived" Wolfe saw her ears sag, but her gaze was still on the elk in front of her, hesitantly he finished;
"The sound of a raven mocker means that someone in the area will soon die" Wolfe looked down at his meal "Somehow I can't believe I still remember that..."
