29 April, 1940 - Poland Nicky belly-crawled through the bushes on this moonless night, inching his way across a field, dirt clogging his nose and eyes. He suppressed his coughs for fear of being discovered. After they had left Sofia, Oscar had not returned to their group. Jacob and Irma had hurried to lead them farther away to the next hiding place. They had stopped to rest, and Nicky had been drinking water from a stream with the three children of Jacob and Irma behind a cluster of trees when they heard an argument erupt between the adults and soldiers. They had been discovered. Nicky winced at the memory. The children had hidden and covered their eyes, but they would never forget the sound of the shots, or the complete silence that ensued.
