Rejecting Her

Nathan’s P.O.V.

“Is that …… Avery?” Albert asked me in a surprised tone while looking somewhere in the crowd. The whole pack was present in the backyard of the pack house to celebrate my birthday. I followed his gaze, and my breath hitched when I spotted her standing with her classmates.

Aero growled in approval while taking in her appearance. For the first few seconds, I really had a hard time believing that she was really Avery, William’s younger sister, and the famous tomboy of our pack. “She was looking beautiful and ravishing,” Aero said in a dreamy voice, making me gulp hard. I felt a tug in my heart when our gazes met.

We held our gazes for a few seconds, before she averted her gaze nervously, making Aero whimper in disapproval. “What’s wrong with you?” I asked him in an irritating tone, still having my eyes on Avery. “Hey, love.” Suddenly Martha called me in a loving tone, but due to some reason, I cringed at the sweetness of her voice. What exactly was wrong with me?

I suppressed the frustration building inside my chest and wrapped my hand around her waist. She smiled shyly, but my heart didn’t flutter this time. Aero once again growled in disapproval and retreated back into my mind. My gaze once again went to Avery, who was now laughing at something. She was standing with Victor, a warrior’s son, and Helena, our delta’s daughter. Jealousness seeped through my veins when Victor wrapped his hand around her shoulder while saying something to her.

I couldn't tell what had changed, but I felt a weird attraction towards Avery for the last few days. She didn't know but I almost stalked her for two or three days but stopped myself yesterday. She was a plain Jane, and I felt as if I were cheating on Martha. Martha was the love of my life, and there was no way that I would let someone come between us.

“I am really excited, you know,” Martha said to me, making me glance at her with a calm gaze. I sipped on my drink. “Did you talk with your dad, Nathan?” Robin asked me while sipping on his drink. “Why do I need to talk with him?” I asked him nonchalantly, still glancing at Avery. “Guys… this is between me and Nathan. It doesn’t make any difference whether he tells me tonight or on my birthday. I am sure that we are fated to be mates.” Martha said in a sweet tone, defending my decision to announce her as my mate.

“Don’t give her false hope, human. There is no way that I will let you reject my fated mate for her,” Aero growled aloud, showing his determination to me. Unlike me, he hated Martha. “This is not on you,” I spat arrogantly, earning a loud growl at the back of my mind, giving me a headache. I drank a mouthful of my drink as I was now feeling some uneasiness.

“Are you okay?” Martha asked me in a worried tone. “Yeah… just feeling a bit hot,” I answered her while unbuttoning the first two buttons of my shirt. My gaze went to Avery, who glanced at me before giving her glass to Helena. Aero suddenly started pacing at the back of my mind, intensifying the headache. “What are you doing?” I yelled at him, and he once again growled in anger. “Nathan…. Nathan… this is almost midnight. Hang on, brother…. Where is William?” Robin yelled while looking around.

“Where are you?” I mind-linked my best friend who was absent all this time. “We have some problems on the border, Nathan. I am taking care of the matter with Dad,” he answered me in a calm but serious tone. “Shall I come?” I asked him immediately in an alert tone. “No… no need. I can deal with this… you enjoy your time… this is your birthday, not mine,” he immediately refused my help. He always did that. He has been my best friend since we were in kindergarten and always knew what to do to make me feel at ease.

I saw Avery walking out of the backyard. “Where is she going?” Robin asked with a frown, and I glared hard at him. “Is… is she Avery?” Martha asked in a shocked tone. “Shocked? We also had the same expression,” Robin chuckled while looking in Avery’s direction. She was walking straight and comfortably in her heels. Her hips were swaying lightly, but this was not a seductive move. Still, I felt a twitch in my pants. I immediately pulled Martha into my embrace and inhaled sharply to fill my system with her scent of guilt, but sneezed hard.

I was about to say something to her about the perfume that she used tonight when Aero jumped on his feet while howling aloud. At the same time, an alluring scent of honeydew and jasmine hit my nostrils. I growled aloud while yelling the word. “MATE.” Aero growled with me, changing my tone, and I looked around for the owner of that alluring scent. “Follow the scent,” Aero commanded me, and my feet unconsciously lifted up.

“Na… than.” I stopped in my tracks and I felt that someone had poured a bucket full of cold water on me. I snapped my head towards Martha, and my heart broke down into so many pieces when I saw tears in her eyes. “She is not our mate. Go for our mate.” Aero yelled at me, demanding to follow the scent. I was now in turmoil. I needed to find the person first before deciding what to do next. “No…. you will not reject her,” Aero roared at me.

“I love Martha… she can only be my mate. This… this whole mate thing is a mistake,” I retorted aloud and pushed my wolf deep inside my mind. My feet followed the scent and I walked towards the door to the pack house. “Nathan.” Martha sobbed when I removed my hand from her waist. “I will be back,” I muttered with difficulty and almost ran towards the door.

I banged the door harshly while entering the living room. I was now breathing heavily, and I searched for the she-wolf with this alluring scent. I cursed the Moon Goddess for pairing me with someone whom I didn’t love. I had promised Martha that she would be my Luna, and there was no way that I would break my promise. Aero tried to break free himself, but I kept on pushing him deep inside my mind.

I growled aloud in anger when I found out who my mate was. She was standing with William while having a serious conversation with him and their dad. They all looked towards me, and I saw confusion in her eyes. She was looking stunning tonight, but she was just a pampered daddy’s girl with a tomboy attitude. I grimaced while storming towards her. William immediately took a defensive stance in front of her, and so did her father.

“What happened, Nathan?” Beta Edward asked me in a calm tone, but my eyes were glued to the person behind them. She still had a confused look. She had a pair of beautiful sapphire-blue eyes. One part of me wanted to pull her into my embrace and mark her at this very instant, whereas the other part of me wanted to scold her for ruining my plans. Martha was a fierce warrior and a perfect Luna material. Avery was nowhere near her in intelligence and beauty.

I felt extremely hot, indicating that I was about to shift. But before that, I had to finish something. Aero was still struggling to stop me, but I made up my mind when I stopped in front of them. I took a few deep breaths, still having my eyes glued to her. I heard my father and my mother calling my name but I zoned out everyone. Only Martha could be my mate, and I would make her my mate on her birthday in two months.

“I, Nathan Blakewood, the future alpha of the Blood Moon Pack, reject Avery Smith as my mate and my Luna,” I announced in a cold tone. I heard so many gasps around me, but my eyes were glued on Avery. Her eyes narrowed in confusion, but soon they widened in shock and horror.

“Aaahhhh,” she screamed in pain while clutching her chest. “Avery.” William and Edward both screamed in horror and wrapped their hands around her body, saving her fall. “What did you do?” Both my father and Aero roared at the same time, startling me. I growled angrily while barring my canines from my father. I was now on the verge of my first shift.

“Take your rejection back, Nathan.” My father demanded angrily while storming towards me with my mother on his tail. “I will not…. She can’t be my mate… I will not accept anyone else than Martha as my mate,” I refused him immediately and angrily. “Are you out of your mind, you i***t? She is underage…. You have put her life at risk.” Mom screamed at me while running towards Avery.

My head snapped towards Avery, and I felt that someone had snatched the ground under my feet. She was gasping while opening her mouth wide open. She had clutched her chest, and her beautiful and pink face was now completely pale, as if she were about to die. I didn't want her as my mate, but I didn't want her to die either. “Take the rejection back.” Aero roared at the back of my mind. I was frozen in my spot while looking at Avery with wide eyes in horror.

“Avery…. Honey…. Honey… try to breathe… try to breathe… someone call the doctor.” Her father tried to comfort her in a panic tone and screamed in the end. My heart stopped breathing in the end when I saw blood oozing out of her nose and ears now. Her eyes were now glued to me. The pain, hurt, betrayal….. all the emotions in her eyes were making me suffocate now. “You scumbag…. She is underage… her wolf can’t share her pain of rejection. What did you do?” My father yelled at me at the top of his lungs.

“I….. Avery Smith….”

“Avery….. no….no.” William yelled while holding her tightly in his embrace. Aero howled painfully and retreated back to the back of my mind, pulling the wall between us.

“I…. Accept …. Y.. our.. rej…ection…Al…pha N…athan …lakef ….ield ……an …….d …..sev…..ere….a..ll….t…he b…onds w…i…th u.” she uttered while looking at me with so much coldness in her eyes now. Blood was now streaming down her eyes instead of tears. “Aaaahhhhhh.” I screamed in pain and fell down on the ground on my fours while clutching my chest. I felt every second of the snapping of the mate bond between us. The wave of pain of her acceptance hit me hard.

I was immediately drenched in sweat and felt that I couldn’t breathe. “No.. no… Avery… Avery… ju.. just hang on, love… just hang on,” I heard William's fearful voice, making me lift my head up. She had closed her eyes now, and for a few seconds, I felt that she stopped breathing too. The pain in my chest intensified and I curled up. Everyone was around Avery. No one was with me when I was writhing on the ground in front of them.

“Nathan… what did you do?” I heard Martha sobbing hard, and I screamed one more time when she touched me. I felt that my skin burnt at the place where she touched me. She sobbed aloud, but I felt dizzy because of the lack of oxygen in my system and due to the pain. It should have been the happiest day of my life, but the Moon Goddess ruined everything for me. I should have told my father and others. I saw black spots in front of my eyes. I saw William standing up with Avery in his embrace.

For a few seconds, our gazes met, and I froze in my place when I saw hatred and an expression of betrayal in his eyes. He was holding Avery tightly in his embrace while looking at me with a murderous gaze. He was my best friend. He should understand why I did this. "Take her to the hospital, William.... now." My father screamed at the top of his lungs in panic.

William didn't spare any glances at me and stood up with Avery in his embrace in bridal style. He stormed out of the place and my father followed him without even looking at me. I screamed one more time when the next wave of pain hit my chest one more time. I felt that someone was trying to rip my heart out of my chest.

The ringing in my head increased, making me unable to hear any voice around me. I saw everyone running away, leaving me behind to deal with my pain alone. “Aero…. H… elp.” I called my wolf for help but was met with silence. I felt someone holding me by my shoulder but I couldn’t register who the person was before I fainted.
