Sun shining bright outside of my window, I decided to pick up my phone near my bed table. I can't help but plaster a small smile on my face while my hand tried to scoop my phone. It's not an alarm, okay? Well, probably you could call it an alarm. But really, it's not an alarm. Half-opening my eyes, I saw the chat from the person whom I could consider my human alarm. Wait, that was a cringe-worthy term. I need to get hold of my metaphors. Ugh, the perks of being a writer. Anyway, it was from Blake. Blake: Wake up, sleepyhead. Time to prepare for school. Have a good day ahead! Damn boy. Look at that grammar. No typographical errors! Very encouraging choice of words. No dozens of emojis after the text, just what I wanted. I sigh and smile again. What a lovely day to begin with! Always, after getting his messages. Picking up my phone, I sent him back my typical messages like: You too, I had a great night. Thanks to you! Sleep tight. Teenagers like me who like to meet some random stranger online isn't weird, right? It's a trend nowadays. You just need to cover up your real identity, or you might not want a weird stalker around you. It's all about you and your safety. And last but not least, you are happy! Life is too short so bring out your slutty side. How I wish I could bring that out in the real-world and flirt whenever I want to. But no, I'm basically an introvert type of person, so I don't hang out with many people. Just my best friend, Nadia. "Oh, come on, Heather. Don't tell me you don't have a boyfriend after meeting a lot of strangers online." Nadia said as we hold our lunch tray towards our usual spot in the cafeteria. I can't help but roll my eyes. "I'm not pressuring myself. Besides…" I'm still figuring out whether I'll tell her about Blake or not. "Besides?" She asked curiously. "Nevermind." "Oh, come on! You know I don't like cliffhangers!" She gave me her famous puppy eyes just to let me spill it, but no, I've decided not to tell her yet. "I’ll tell you when I’m confident enough,” I answered and put our lunch tray on the table. “Heather Ferrer,” Nadia said in a loud voice that half of the students in the cafeteria look at her. Oh no, this is bad. I shushed her up. “Lower down your voice! You see, they are staring at you!” “I don’t care!” she shouted again. Biting my lips, I mentally prayed to God to send His holy spirit to this girl. Nadia continued. “I’m sick of your internet relationship with guys whom you didn’t even meet up because you’re scared. Now, let me ask you, do you want to have a boyfriend or not?” “Nadia, I – “ She cuts me off. “And when I say boyfriend, it’s a guy whom you could talk, date, play, have s*x with personally– “ “Nadia!” I shouted because that was below the belt. She covered her mouth, using her hands. “Sorry, it just slipped. Anyway, I meant to say a boyfriend in the real world. Not on the internet, you dummy.” “I never said I don’t want a boyfriend, Nadia. I just don’t want to have to feel like I own him something.” “And what would that something be?” she asked knowingly with a mischievous grin. “We’re in school! Don’t expect me to say it out loud.” I huffed as I started to push my lunch tray away. She began laughing like a psychopathic witch, just like in Disneys. “Well, there’s nothing bad about being a virgin! You’re just overreacting, Heather.” When she said the magical word, I instantly cover her mouth, this time, using my two bare hands. “Shh!” “Whatever, this is partly your fault for being an introvert. You know, there’s a lot of cool and hot guys in our school. Why bother hooking up on the internet?” She started to eat her lunch while I was only staring at my carbonara. “I like the thrill of the internet,” I answered casually. “Tch. Your style is odd. Hey, look at those boys. Pick one of them; I’ll get it for you.” Turning around on my seat, I’ve never wanted to see the cliché scene in high school where a group of self-proclaimed and narcissistic boys or, as I like to call it, gang walking in the spotlight while girls and, okay, add the gays too, screaming their name. They just wanted to mess around with students, which I really hate because I don’t like arrogant people. All eyes were on the boys as they made their way to the lunch line. I turned my attention back to Nadia. “What do you mean? Do you know them?” “Yeah, one of them asked me out yesterday.” She simply answered and took a roll of her carbonara. Well, she’s gorgeous and hot while I’m just an ugly duckling leeching at her side. “Nope. Thanks, but I don’t like those kinds of people.” “Then what do you like?” “Hmm, I like quiet and good-looking people who have IQ and wit.” “Basically, you like nerdy types?” she pointed her fork at me. My lips twitched. “Whatever you call it. Anyway, I just don’t want to make a fool of myself, okay?” I looked at my hands when I said that. “Why would you think that?” “Because I’m not experienced! What guy wants a girl who doesn’t know what to do during s – “ I didn’t continue pronouncing the word because we’re in school. Nadia rolled her eyes. “Duh! Don’t think like that, Heather. I’m sure a lot of guys wouldn’t mind – “ I bark a burst of laughter in front of her that made her stop eating. I could say that some of the students were eyeing me. Who wouldn’t? If Nadia has a psychopathic witch laugh, then mine was a horrible donkey laugh. “They wouldn’t mind? Are you kidding me? I haven’t even had my first kiss yet!” I whisper-yelled at her. “Once they find out, it’s like they will pity or worse laugh at me.” “So you’re saying…” “I’m saying that I’m tired of being a virgin. Oh, God, forgive what I’ve said. Okay, well maybe I’m not yet ready to have s*x,” there, I said the word, “…but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn how to kiss. I’m not even sure if this is making sense, but I want to be able to do something aside from talking to a stranger on the internet, okay?” Nadia looks focused and had something on her mind after I’ve blurted out my thoughts. “I get it.” “Thanks for listening.” I sigh and put my head down on the table. “David!” I snap my head up to see my psychopath best friend screaming at the top of her lungs for the tallest guy in the gang, which I mentioned a while ago. Not just the tallest, but most sexy. Hissing, I grab Nadia’s arm. “Hey, what are you doing?” I’m starting to feel the throbbing of my pulse because of the situation I’m stuck in. God, what am I going to do? The tallest guy named David suddenly starts walking towards our table. I try my best to send him a signal that my psychopath best friend was just kidding, but he keeps walking towards us. “I’m getting you a coach, Heather,” Nadia answered that left me wide-eyed. She shouted his name again. “David!” This lunatic…God, help me! “Stop it, Nadia. I am dead serious!” I whisper-yelled and tried to get her not to yell his name over and over again in the cafeteria. All eyes were on us right now. But this David guy keeps on walking towards us. He looks at me, and I don’t know what to react because of my panic attacks. “I would like you to meet my friend here, Heather. Angelic name, isn’t it?” Nadia introduced my name, and I just stand there at her side, stiffly. Lord, please help me. David looks over at me to acknowledge my existence. I look so small towering his height. Nadia continued. “She has a bit of a problem, and I was wondering if you could help her.” I shook my head involuntarily and think, Say no, don’t bother to help. Tell her you’re busy. David didn’t answer and just looked at me. I gave him an awkward smile because I am very embarrassed right now. “Continue.” Nadia continued. “Well, let’s just say she needs some experience in a field you are described as an expert in.” Shut up! David asked her. “And what might that be?” Damn boy, I’m doomed. “s****l activity.” And I’m… dead. *** “Can you imagine how embarrassing it was? Ugh! I just wanted the world to explode and swallow my body at that time!” Blake didn’t answer after I’ve told him what happened to the cafeteria. I like him because he is a good listener while I am the talkative type (which others couldn’t describe if you will ask them). “Hello? Are you still there?” I asked on the other line. I was walking on my bed while talking to him tonight, just like our regular routine. Usually, I hung up at 10:00 in the evening because he has class and it’s time for me to sleep. But tonight, he was oddly quiet. He usually cracks up a joke when I told him something funny. And I think what happened to me in the cafeteria is considered funny. Or am I the only one who thinks it that way? “Sorry I’ve got to go.” He just ended the call right away, without proper goodbyes. It’s odd, but I just leave it like that. Maybe he’s busy, or there’s an urgent call or emergency to his family. I’m the type of person who respects others' privacy, but for tonight, I badly want to know why he acted like that because… I sigh. “To stop the embarrassment and my best friend’s lunatic idea, I told them that I already have a boyfriend… and his name is Blake,” I whispered, more to myself inside of the four corners of my room.
