Alpha Kaiden's standpoint.
It was dark when we arrived back at the Pack house.
“I'll be in my room. If you need anything, you can ring the maids.” I said in a small voice, my face slightly marred with a frown as I made my way to the stairs without a glance at her.
“Kaiden?” She called out in a hushed voice, making me stop in my track. I tilted my head slightly. “Did I say anything wrong? Your mood changed when I mentioned that house.” Though her voice was gentle, almost pulling me out of my dark side, I couldn't take it anymore.
I swiftly turned to her with a finger pointed to her and my brows furrowed in rage. “Don't you dare mention that house again!” My voice was harsher than I intended but not that I regretted it.
“Kaiden?” Elian walked in, surprised at my tone, but I paid him no attention.
Instead, I went into my room and shut the door behind me. I leaned against the door as the images flashed before my eyes; blood, pain, regret in their eyes.
“I never should have saved her,” my lips muttered as I fell to the floor. “I'm so sorry, mom.”
The only regret I have had since that time was that I could have killed her, but instead, I let her live and leave the Pack to another one.
Still wallowing in my thoughts, I heard a knock on the door, and I swiftly rose to my feet.
“Kaiden? Are you okay?” Scarlett's voice reached my ears.
“What is it you need?” I questioned, trying to keep my voice steady and not too harsh.
“I just wanted to know if you're okay.” Her soft voice warmed my heart and I just wanted to open the door. To stare at her beautiful face until I fell asleep.
But being this weak, I just can't. I'm the Alpha of the Pack and I always have to be strong.
“As you can see, I'm still breathing.” I muttered in a low voice, barely above a whisper.
Perhaps it sounded funny to her, considering how she chuckled. “Of course, you are, and that's all you need to do. Breathe and everything will be fine.”
“Thanks,” I uttered, leaning my head against the door, but there was no response and my wolf suddenly couldn't pick up her scent anymore.
I slowly opened the door, peeping through the small opening, and watched her retire into her room, a small smile tugging at the corner of my lips.
I shut the door and walked further into the room, perching against the bed.
This pain has to stop somehow. I must bury the past. I can't burden my brothers with such great pain. I thought within myself as I laid my back on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
After a moment, I squeezed my eyes shut and in no time, I dozed off into dreamland…
It was that day… The best and worst day of my life. It was the first day my parents took me out together. It was either my dad was busy with the Pack's politics or my mom was busy taking care of me and my brother. So we never got to go out together.
The house across the Pack grounds was once considered as part of the Pack until that day.
I trained there daily, while Elian was into music and Jaron was always the rascal among us. The ground was battered, my clothes dirty and my legs a mess even with the expensive shoes I wore. The smell of sweat filled the air as I drove my sword through the standing straws serving as my opponent. My parents approached me while I trained.
“Mom? Dad?” I looked at them, surprised, as I lowered my wooden sword.
“Oh, you little cute thing!” My mom approached me, rubbing her cheek against mine as she pulled me in a hug. It was a thing for her.
“I was just training…" I muttered, my voice barely audible as I couldn't think of a reason for them to be out here.
“That's just great,” my dad, the Alpha, crouched down to my height, playfully pulling my cheeks.
“We just have to have a family time with you and your brothers, they should be here soon.” Mom said with a smile that spread to my lips.
“Is Rena coming too?” I questioned, my voice filled with curiosity, but I could see the hesitation in their eyes. How they exchanged glances.
They didn't consider her family.
“This is strictly family, son.” My dad bellowed in a deep voice, close to commanding from his Alpha authority.
He had always been like that with us; highly expectant of his heirs.
After a few more minutes, Elian and Jaron arrived with some maids and guards, neatly dressed.
“I had the maids pack some clothes for you. Go change, then we'll decide where we want to go.” My mom uttered, gesturing at the maids to help me dress up.
“It's fine, I can get changed on my own.” I said, grabbing the clothes from the maid before walking into the house to change.
I stood in front of a mirror in a room and I had just taken off my shirt when I heard a clattering sound behind me.
This grasped my attention. Slowly, I reached for my wooden sword which I had dropped on the floor and gently tiptoed to the direction of the sound.
Standing a few steps away from where I was sure the sound came from, I asked, “Who's there?”
“Kaiden?” The small voice came and I quickly recognized it.
“Rena?” I swiftly moved to the door, pulled it over and there she was, looking so tiny with her legs crawled up to her chest. “What are you doing here? Does mom know you're here?”
She shook her head as a response and stood up. “I just want to play with you.” Her voice cracked, almost filled with tears.
“How did you get here? You have to go now before mom gets angry.” My voice was barely above a whisper now but filled with worry and concern.
To me, Rena was just a sister I never had, but to others, she was a total stranger.
“Can't I play with you? You promised to be my brother.”
I took her hands in mine, caressing them gently as our eyes locked, hers filled with tears. “I'll always be your brother, Rena.”
Just then, I heard my mom's scream, and they all rushed into the house, seeing me with Rena. My mom's eyes blazed with rage. I had never seen her like that.
“You!” She spat, pointing a finger at Rena. “You led them to us, right? You're a spy!” She moved closer, dragging Rena by her ear.
“Stop it, mom.” I pleaded, but it was as though she couldn't hear my voice anymore.
“Please, mom. You're hurting me.” Rena sobbed as she pleaded, but my mom halted and slapped her to the floor.
“How dare you call me your mother with that flirty mouth of yours?” Her teeth gritted as she spoke.
My dad turned to the maids. “Take the kids to a safe place and make sure nothing happens to them. Protect them with your life!” His voice echoed in my ears.
“Yes, Alpha.” The shivering maids responded, grabbing Elian and Jaron, while the last maid approached me.
“Let's go, my Prince.” Her voice was as soft, as scared as it was.
“No!” I spat, standing my ground. “She's just a kid too, and she needs to be protected.”
The loud bang and thud against the door grasped our attention.
“Take them away,” My dad said to the maid who ran off with Elian and Jaron while I stood up for Rena.
I rushed to her and helped her up, dusting off her dress. My mom was about to say something when the door busted open. Her eyes were widened in shock, and she swiftly grabbed me to a corner, but I never let go of Rena.
We both sat in the corner as I watched my parents being slaughtered by them…
“It's all because of her…" Those were my mom's last words.
I glanced at Rena, who sat quietly in the corner.
“Have I made a mistake?” I thought within myself, but didn't dare to breathe a word.
“Let's go,” One of the men said as they retreated from the house.
I dashed out of the corner, knelt by my mom, holding her hands as tears oozed down my cheeks.
“Wake up, mommy. Please, open your eyes.” My eyes squeezed shut as I said those desperate words.
But this time, as though it were real, I heard her voice again.
“She's here!” My mom's voice came like a whisper carried by the wind.
I turned to the corner where Rena was sitting a few seconds ago, but she was gone!
Gone and now… here!
