HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

1258 Words
Sofie’s POV It had been a few weeks now and we hadn’t heard anything from Skerrit or any other member of the seelie, but that didn’t mean they weren’t watching. My father and brothers remained tense and it didn’t help that the Alpha’s son was returning and the responsibility of a welcome home party had landed on them. Since my father and brothers were occupied with their duties, my mum and I were now travelling to meet Dana, the witch. It is my birthday tomorrow and we couldn’t risk wasting time before masking my new scent. After we drove for what seemed like forever, we finally arrived at our destination. Mum called dad to let him know we had arrived safely before finding a hotel and checking in for the night. The next day I woke to the most magnificent smell. Mum had ordered room service for ten and squished it onto the tiny dining room table. As I rubbed my eyes, trying to wake up she shouted behind me “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”. And I swear I jumped a foot into the air. Clutching my chest I tried to steady my breathing whilst mum keeled over cackling beside me. “Thanks mum” I eventually sarcastically breathed. We both took a few more moments to collect ourselves before mum still giggling said “eat up.... we need to leave in an hour, still quite a drive before us”. After breakfast we began our drive, I had already asked a million times but couldn’t help asking once more “you sure we couldn’t just pop there?”. “No” mum replied firmly for the hundredth time, she sighed before finally giving her reasoning “Dana doesn’t know we are active fairies Sofie, she thinks we are dormant and it is best kept that way”. I nodded, finally understanding her reasoning behind this never ending drive. I dozed off somewhere along the way and awoke as the car came to a stop. I looked to see we were finally here, I had of course never been here before but it matched my brother’s description to a tee. Mum looked nervous as she took a deep breath before smiling to me and saying softly “come let’s go.... and remember what I told you”. I nodded I could see the seriousness of this meeting even with mum trying her best to hide it. We walked up to the small cottage and mum hesitated before knocking firmly on the door. An older woman answered, her hair was unruly and her clothes dishevelled and when she smiled you could see her missing tooth. I worked hard to hold my face expressionless simple nodding a greeting. She motioned for us to come inside, obviously not the conversationalist she simply looked to my mother who passed her a small bag. She opened it to check its contents before searching for and then passing my mother a small vile. As we turned to leave the witch grabbed a firm hold on my arm, I turned back in surprise as she warned in her deep, hoarse voice “my potion will work on all wolves... except not on your mate and I can see you will meet him soon. I also warn you against lying to him... that path has nothing but sadness upon it”. I nodded before thanking her for her warning and the kindness she had shown us. She nodded but only slightly before ushering us to leave. We got back into the car and drove for a little while before we suddenly popped, car and all. We were still driving but as I looked around I recognised we were not five minutes from home. I looked to mum as she sat smirking “you didn’t seriously think I would drive the long way home? She would have sensed our magic if I had done this on the way there but now we are free.... never have to see that witch again”. I could sense her relief along with her happiness. I then turned myself completely towards her “do you think I will be able to do stuff like this? I mean I am only half fairy”. Mum tilted her head playfully back and forth as she thought “I’m not sure sweetie but what I do know is you are going to find your mate soon. Isn’t that exciting!! Maybe it will be at the welcome home party tonight!”. I sighed unsure whether I was ready to find my mate “and what if he rejects me?”. My mum looked shocked as she pulled over the car. “Mum not many werewolves think to themselves ‘hmmm what do I want in a mate? Oh I know I want a big secret that I have to be careful to hide the rest of our lives’” I jeered sarcastically. She sighed, obviously seeing my point. She brought up her hand to softly cup my cheek, stroking it with her thumb “then it will be there loss and you, my beautiful daughter, will be free to find yourself a mate of your choosing. Although I wouldn’t quite rule him out yet, the moon goddess would have picked wisely for you as she did for me”. I sighed and nodded, allowing a small bit of hope to sneak back in. After all the moon goddess had found my father who gladly accepted his fairy mate, maybe she could find another wolf just as open minded. . .. Squirt/Sam’s POV I don’t know when we became party planners but I was over it already. The Luna had done the invitations and ordered the supplies but had left the rest to my father and therefore to us brothers too. After what seemed like forever we were finally nearly done, decorating and putting the final plans in place for tonight. Dad continued to check in with mum but I knew none of us would be at ease until they had returned. And when mum told dad about the witches prophecy he began an all new kind of worry. Siro, Seth and dad stayed behind to finish cleaning up as I went to help the girls with their bags. We had just reached mum and dads when the others came through the door. Dad wasted no time, asking us all to sit down so mum and Sofie could tell him yet again everything that had happened. Sofie didn’t seemed overjoyed about the prospect of finding her mate but I could see the witches words were not what had effected her..... this ran deeper. After we had been dismissed I follow Sofie to her room. “So what’s wrong? Why don’t you want to find your mate?” I asked as I closed the door behind us. “Because he will probably reject me.... and from what I have heard that isn’t a great experience” she replied not looking at me. “He’s not going to reject you Sofie... the moon goddess knows better than to give you a weak wolf” I said throwing my arm over her shoulders. She smiled, wrapping her arms around my waist to give me a gentle squeeze. “Thank you Sam” she whispered into my chest. I paused for a moment before kissing the top of her head, ‘she called me Sam’ I thought smiling to myself.
