Sofie’s POV
“So what are you wearing tonight?” I asked, trying to distract Louisa before she noticed my brother’s indifference. She forced a smile back at me, knowing exactly what I was doing, “I think the navy one, what about you?”. I grabbed her hand, giving it a light squeeze, letting her know I was there for her. “I was thinking something new, I have worn all the others quite a few times now, as you keep reminding me”, I replied with a playful glare. Louisa let go of my hand and clapped her hands together excitedly “shopping! I’m so glad you asked I was going to but didn’t want to have to drag you around sulking like last time”. “Last time was three hours, Louisa” I said bluntly. “There were sales” she replied dismissively before she got to chatting about all the different stores she needed, not wanted but needed to visit. I plastered on a smile but groaned inwardly, I knew I would come to regret my offer, and quickly.
It had taken some convincing, but eventually, I convinced Squirt to accompany us. “You know you should really stop calling me that, I’ve got at least a foot on you”, he groaned. “What would you have me call you instead Sam, Samuel? All way too formal, how would anyone be able to recognise you as my annoying older brother?” I replied as I retrieved my purse and phone off the bedside table. He rolled his eyes as he leaned back against the doorframe “maybe because we all look near identical, well not Seth and Siro identical but bloody similar none the less”. He was right, we all had the matching features passed down from our parents; my mother’s jet black hair and olive skin, my father’s height and green eyes. Looking at us, you could see we were siblings. I was, however, pleased with our difference in build. My brothers were muscular and stocky like my father, whereas I was petite with a slender frame like our mother. “You should be nicer to me, bribery will only work so long before I turn around and say no next time you want me to drive you somewhere” he said as he led us back down the hall. I skipped along beside him “nah, you love me too much to leave me stranded”. “This better not be three bloody hours like last time, otherwise this will be the last time. And my muffins better have icing” he said, pointing a finger at me as if it was a life or death matter. I held my hands up in surrender “that day was as torturous for me as it was for you”. His eyes narrowed on me, waiting for his confirmation “and yes your cupcakes will have icing”. All my brothers could be convinced to do near anything as long as food was involved in my bargaining, especially sweets.
Louisa enjoyed dragging us around to all her favourite shops and I was surprised to find a few items I liked too, even in her stores. Louisa was very bright, colourful and... risqué, I guess you would call it. I, on the other hand, preferred darker colours or shades that were a little more modest, still stunning but covering a little more. When I saw a burgundy dress with a cut out in the back and a flared skirt, I knew immediately what I wanted to wear tonight.
When we returned to the pack, we went for some training with mum. Although we needed to keep our fairy powers hidden, mum was still intent on each of us knowing how to use them and practicing them regularly. She always started off with the simple stuff like popping but quickly moved to the harder stuff. After warming up, she asked us to pop somewhere and bring her something. Squirt returned quickly with a closed hand, offering it to Mum. She held out her hand and he let the frog fall into her palm. Mum squealed, throwing the frog before hitting Squirts' arm. “Samuel, you little.....” she menaced. She kept her glare on him for a moment as he laughed hysterically before turning her attention back to me at “ You try sweetheart”. I groaned, throwing my head back as she encouraged me “you will never get it if you don’t try”. I rolled my eyes before nodding “okay”. I took a singular deep breath before popping to a nearby tree, breaking off a leaf and popping back to beside her. As I did, I looked first to my empty hand, then back to the tree, where the leaf was floating towards the ground. “Maybe I just won’t get this one, mum” I said glumly. “You said that about popping once too, sweetheart. Don’t worry, it just takes time” she said, smiling assuringly as she stroked my cheek. She turned to glare at Squirt again, then smiling gently back at me “ That’s enough for today. How about some dinner before your little party?”. I nodded slowly, still feeling a little glum that I wasn’t getting it, as Squirt began excitedly asking what was on the menu today.
After dinner together, Louisa came over to get ready. She helped do my make-up and I did her hair before we dressed and prepared for the party. I tried to avoid the subject but when she outrightly asked me “do you think Siro will like this?” I hated that I couldn’t lie. “Ummm he does like red”, I said, finding the only honest thing I could say that wouldn’t upset her. I really needed to talk to my brother about letting her down easy but he was always so serious he probably would say something blunt and uncaring, upsetting her more than this lingering hope she was clinging to.

Seth’s POV
As Siro thudded on the door, I looked over at my phone. It was still thirty minutes until my alarm. “Go away Siro, we still got time” I yelled, before turning over and trying to get back to sleep. The door opened and I sighed heavily. How had I forgotten to lock it? Siro came over and as he ripped back the doona he said “no we don’t, it takes a while to get to the western border and we need to be there early for hand over”. As my doona fell to the floor he groaned “couldn’t you put on some shorts or something?”. I rolled over smirking, “ Well, one you are the one who pulled off the blanket covering me and two are you going to be this bashful when mate comes along?”. He shrugged “you don’t know, we might not have to share”. As I got up to walk over to my closest I tapped his cheek playfully, smiling at him as I passed “sharing is caring brother”. I dressed in some athletic shorts and a tee before we headed out. I didn’t worry about shoes, knowing we were about to get back undressed any way.
We walked into the trees and shifted as we made our way towards the western border. We took hand over from the warriors on patrol before us and then began our run. It was three hours, but time always flew when I was running free in wolf form. It helped to get Zach back in a better mood. He’d been a grumpy bastard all day due to our lack of sleep lately and his objection to the mafia jobs. They earned us money but they weren’t exactly honourable and that didn’t sit right with him. It was about the only thing we disagreed about. Well, that and f**king she-wolves, he thought we should wait for mate but being half fairy, we may not even have a mate out there waiting for us and I sure as hell wasn’t going to live a life of celibacy.
After our patrol, I had a quick bite in the dining hall before going back to my apartment to get ready for tonight. After another shower, I dressed in my usual ripped jeans and button-down shirt. I messily styled my medium-length hair before chucking on a pair of vans and going out to wait for my siblings.
