For Dray Prescot the challenges are enormous. Snatched up to Kregen, four hundred light years from Earth, by the giant Scorpion of the Star Lords, his task is to unite the sub-continent of Balintol to resist the reiving fish-headed Shanks from around the curve of the world. The trouble is — due to the megalomaniac striving for power of various factions within the countries of Balintol, the whole place looks set to go up in the flames of both Civil and Foreign Wars.
Dray Prescot, as described by one who has seen him on this Earth, is a man above middle height with brown hair and level brown eyes, with enormously broad shoulders and superbly muscled physique. He moves like a savage hunting cat, silent and lethal. There is about him an abrasive honesty and an indomitable courage. Reared in the harsh conditions of Nelson’s Navy he is a man who considered himself a failure on Earth, but who has found himself and destiny upon the terrible and beautiful world of Kregen.
He has uncovered some of the details of a plot by the cultists of the religion of Dokerty in the country of Caneldrin. They have successfully contrived to turn ordinary men and women into receptacles for demons, who then destroy wantonly until the frail human body can no longer support the intolerable demonic forces. This horrific power will be turned upon the other countries of the subcontinent when Dray Prescot has the task of uniting Balintol.
Thoughts of Delia, Delia of Delphond, Delia of the Blue Mountains, sustain him in his darkest hours. Now he has escaped from the Dokerty temple with a mysterious young woman, Veda. They are fleeing for their lives as the Suns of Scorpio descend into night.
