12 Bee and I retired, but sometime in the middle of the night I was awakened by the creak of the front door. I peeked open my eyes and watched Judith step inside. Her severe pallor was noticeable in the dim light. She paused halfway through the door and swept her eyes over us before she looked over her shoulder at the entrance hall. “They are quite all right, and sleeping as children,” she assured someone outside of my view. She paused a moment and I heard a mumbled reply. “I will. Goodnight.” She slipped into her flat and closed the door behind herself.
