8 We put on our cloaks and slipped out through the hidden door. The campus was once more abuzz with activity as the scholars hurried to and fro, some to the dorms and others to their classes. They bowed their heads at Gina and looked in curiosity at us as we hurried down the central lane to one of the larger and grander of the buildings. The tall, wide windows that covered both floors were partially covered by the ends of bookcases. Thick columns supported a large triangular porch roof over two pairs of doors. Above the doors were symbols of the building’s purpose, with angelic figures holding books and stoic scholars in robes marching in long lines to the house of wisdom. “If the book is anywhere, it will be in here,” Gina told us as she led us inside.
