Chapter 2: The Alpha

Harper’s POV I was in the middle of discussing our pack's future with my Beta, Gamma, and Delta. “I’ve said this a thousand time’s and I’ll say this again,” started our beta Carson, “Our pack would be stronger and complete with a Luna.” The Cold Storm Pack was fine without a luna. I didn’t understand everyone’s damn obsession with lunas. I didn’t reply because I didn’t even want to entertain the thought. I kicked my feet onto my desk and leaned back into my seat. “Alpha Harper doesn’t want a luna so we can’t force her,” our gamma Lexi spoke for me as she usually did when the topic was a luna. “You’re only saying that because if she had a mate you two would have to stop f*****g,” Carson argued. “W-what?” Lexi stammered with a blush across her face. “Carson, let’s keep some level of professionalism,” our delta Ben suggested. “I agree with you that our pack would benefit from having a luna but you shouldn’t bring up their private lives and start things. I stared up at the ceiling thinking about what it would be like for our pack to have a luna while they argued. It just didn’t feel right. I don’t even think I wanted a mate. Having a mate would mean I’d have to commit to one person which I’d rather not. “I do want to know,” Ben caught my attention. “but only if you’re comfortable answering Harper. When you find your chosen mate, what are you going to do, reject them?” he asked me while Lexi was still embarrassed and red in the face. “I didn’t think that far ahead,” I answered with a shrug. “I know I wouldn’t reject them. I’d probably just ask for something casual and if they wanted to reject me for not wanting to mate then that’s their choice.” If they really were perfect for me then they probably would want the same thing. “You’re our alpha, we all need to start thinking ahead on all things,” Carson was quick to scold me. To me Luna’s were a liability for packs. I didn’t think we really would benefit from it at all. “Next topic,” I said. My eyes were drawn out the window as a pair of wolves were running past the packhouse, playfully running into each other. I noticed they went for a run every other day. By their aura, I could tell they were mates with a strong bond. I didn’t have anything against mates. It was simply that I wasn’t interested, but they made it look good. Even if I wanted that… if I wanted a mate I would still be against the idea of having a luna so I wouldn’t give in to that desire. “The Eclipse Pack had another banquet to find their second child’s mate,” Lexi said, avoiding eye contact with me and playing with the end of her shirt nervously. “Hasn’t it been about three years? I’d give up if I were them.” I stood up and walked to the window, I could still see the couple. The Blue Eclipse Pack was our rival pack and the only pack to have any real problems with us. My parents did a good job with our relationships with other packs. They were a peaceful luna and alpha… me not too much but I didn’t plan to s**t on their hard work. I tried to keep up the pack’s image. “They’re determined to find her mate,” Lexi said. I closed the window blinds so I wouldn’t see the couple anymore then turned my attention back to the others. “That reminds me,” Carson said. “We’re out of those plants, the one our pack’s witch uses for a few spells.” The plants he was talking about could only grow near the Blue Eclipse Pack’s territory. Not close enough to cause too much trouble. “If the banquet wasn’t too long ago they might be somewhat distracted.” I didn’t want to deal with them so we could get as much as we needed. “I want to take this time to collect resources. End of meeting.” They all stood up. “I’ll lead the others to the area to collect the resources,” Carson offered. “I’ll go,” I said as I walked back to my desk to make sure I didn’t have anything else on my schedule for today. “You don’t have to,” Carson said. “I know but my wolf wants to,” I replied. At times like this when my wolf was the most eager to go somewhere, I could only think that a big opportunity was coming my way. “Come with me while Lexi and Ben stay here,” I told Carson. All four of us shouldn’t be gone at once.” We had a lot of pack members living in the packhouse. Maybe one-third of the pack since we had a big pack. Lexi was the only one to stick around. “Hey…” “Hey Lexi,” I said as I continued organizing a few things before leaving “About what Carson said, it’s not true. If you did want a luna I’d encourage you.” “Don’t worry about it, Lexi.” “I just want you to know I’m not supporting your decision not to get a mate because of my own…,” she cleared her throat, “benefit.” “I wouldn’t blame you if you were.” I walked to her and caressed her face. She laughed nervously. “Whoever is your true mate is really lucky.” “They might not be very lucky to have a mate who doesn’t want to mark them, not if they want to mate with me.” My hand gently slid down her face. She finally made eye contact with me. “I think they’re lucky to be linked to someone like you even if you don’t want to mate. I really admire you, Alpha Harper.” She insisted on using my title. “When I find my mate I might not want to mark them either, like you.” I pulled my hand away as she lifted herself onto her tiptoes. She was leaning towards me for a kiss but I backed away. I enjoyed Lexi’s body but I didn’t want to keep being s****l with her if I could see she was developing feelings for me. I didn’t want to be the reason she rejected a relationship with her mate. “I’ll see you later okay?” I patted her head then opened my office door. “Oh… okay.” I left the pack house with Carson. We shifted into our wolves and made our way with a group of our pack members following us. My wolf suddenly stopped and sniffed the air. ‘Do you smell that?’ I asked Carson over mindlink. ‘A lot of wolves up ahead.’ We sent two of our most quiet and quick-pack members to check out what was going on. ‘It’s a bonfire, it looks like a mixture of a few different packs. They look like late teens and early adults, hardly threatening' One of the reported. Since we were in good standing with most of the packs in this area other than our rivals there wasn’t too much to worry about. ‘Are there any wolves from the Blue Eclipse pack?’ I asked. ‘None, plus Sarah is here.’ We had nothing to worry about so we continued forward. Out of nowhere, I couldn’t think straight and my wolf was making us run in the direction of the overwhelming scent that had this effect on us. When I realized what it could be I tried to take control but she wouldn’t let me. She had a lot of will to meet them, whoever the scent came from. Mate
