Mike Spencer stood in front of the massive window in his office at Spencer Tours with his hands in his pockets. He smiled revealing an insanely perfect set of teeth as his right hand made contact with the small precious velvet box inside his pocket. Looking at his own handsome features reflected on the window he nodded with approval, tracing his moustache. His life had definitely taken an unexpected turn but he would not have it any other way. If anyone told him four months ago that he would be impatiently waiting to take a leap of faith with Jess or any other women for that matter, he would have them thoroughly assessed for insanity but here he was unable to wait any longer. Thinking of Jess, he could not help it but have a huge grin on his face. He could not wait to see her reaction when he goes on one knee and finally declares his love for her. With the romantic evening and getaway he planned, he looked forward to the two of them alone and staying in bed with no work to rush to. If he is lucky, maybe there would be a little Spencer heir of the way. He chuckled just thinking about it, that little guy or princess would inherit the best two set of genes in the world. Maybe he would even be able to convince Jess to stop working. The idea of her serving other people, especially other men food drove him crazy but she refused to quit even when he literally begged her to and offered to double her salary because she was just too proud to depend on him. That’s what drove him crazy about her but ironically also what attracted him to her. Walking back to his desk, he opened his drawer and placed the marriage contract his uncle insisted he had it drawn. He still did not believe that he needed it but Petrose Spencer, his uncle did not take a No when it came to protecting the family business. Luckily for him, his best friend Steve Marlone was an advocate and managed to draft the contract his uncle was satisfied with in a matter of few hours.
On the ground floor of Spencer Tours, Jessica walked in with detective Lucas, detective Peter and sergeant Luther.
“Hi Jess, are you here for Mr S?” Leah asked looking suspicious at the men with her.
“Leah Johnson, you are under arrest for drug smuggling” Jessica responded while sergeant Luther put handcuffs on Leah who was so shocked she did not even hear her rights being cited.
After Leah, the group moved to Julian Reed, Spencer Tours manager, then Ryan and Timothy. Just like Leah, they were also so shocked they could not comprehend what just happened. On the third floor, Mike heard the knock and rushed to open the door. He exhaled before opening. This was it, the first day of his happily ever after.
“Mr Mike Spencer, you are under arrest for drug smuggling, murder and attempted murder”
“What?” Mike looked at her in disbelief.
“You have a right to remain silent” Jessica continued
“Jess?” Mike called her name, confused and shocked.
“Anything you say may and will be used against you in a court of law” Jessica continued reciting his rights.
“Jess, what’s this?” Mike could not believe his eyes and ears. Jess did not look like she was joking at all. He knew the detectives with her, they were well known in Asherway and he could not suppose that they would have time to play tricks or jokes which means he was really getting arrested by his own girlfriend.
Jessica looked at the man she has shared the most intimate moments of her life with. His smooth ivory skin, meticulously trimmed moustache and well toned masculine physique, add his husky voice her heart started fluttering uncontrollably but she can’t cave in. “This is me arresting you for destroying lives, do you know how many kids died from Hail, do you even care?” Jessica asked angrily. A total of fifty five teenagers and young adults had died so far from Mike’s product and it made her sick to her stomach to think anyone would be so cruel and ruthless. Her own hypocritical heart was making her sick.
“Too many but I had nothing to do with that, you must know that” Mike said softly looking at her eyes.
Jessica looked away, she would not be deceived when she has all the evidence. As is she had taken a month too long just to make sure she was not making a mistake. Ten kids died in that month alone, that was on her “I would not be here arresting you if I knew that, would I now?”
Mike’s heart sank, this can’t be happening “Who are you?” he asked. The woman in front of him looked like the love of his life but sounded like a stranger.
“It does not matter” she responded.
“You were an undercover agent. All this time? Us? You woke up in my arms this morning, was any of it real?” Mike asked, the realisation too painful. The woman he was planning his future with was a complete lie. How could he be so blind?
“Take him away” Jessica instructed Lucas, unable to bare listening to Mike’s hurt voice.
Detective Lucas More hesitated a bit before ushering Mike out of the office. Jessica took a deep breath and followed behind. Mike’s facial expression when he discovered the truth was strangely unsettling. “Snap out of it Jess, you had a mission and you executed it” she told herself.
On the ground floor, Mike could not believe it when he saw his employees also on handcuffs. “Benny, please call Steve and my uncle” Mike instructed his butler before Lucas ushered him outside where they were greeted by a group of reporters who did not waste time taking photographs. This was meant to be his happiest day but it turned out to be a nightmare.
“Certainly Sir” Benny responded rushing to make a call after giving Jessica a disapproving stare. He did not have to say anything, Jessica already knew what he thought. To Benny, Mike was a saint who could never do any wrong. If there was ever a need Jessica had no doubt that Benny would gladly lay his life for Mike who apparently saved his life.
Two hours later, Mike slouched on the couch in his mansion with Steve and his uncle sitting opposite him.
“Thanks Steve for getting me bail, I can’t believe this is happening” Mike said, massaging his temples.
“Not a problem mate but I am afraid you are in a tough situation here” Steve responded, worried.
“That w***e set you up! I can’t believe she fooled all of us!” Petrose yelled.
“Calm down Uncle, that’s not good for your blood pressure” Mike warned.
“Don’t tell me to calm down Mike. Zane is the one that gets arrested, not you. I was going to welcome that snake to our family, don’t tell me to calm down!” Petrose shouted. He raised Mike from a tender age of seven years after his brother ( Mike’s father) died in car accident. The loss had become too unbearable to Mike’s mother who was battling depression and eventually lost it and became committed into a mental institution. While Petrose’s own son Zane was constantly in and out of prison, Mike had never gotten into trouble until now.
Mike closed his eyes, the thought of Jess’ betrayal more hurtful than any crime he was accused of. “What did you find out about her, Steve?”
“Her name is Commander Jessica Miles. She is a decorated SEAL, apparently one of the best. She lead the team that apprehended Mr ST” Steve explained. He was also shocked when he found out his friend’s girlfriend’s real identity.
Mike was more than surprised. Being a SEAL explained a lot of Jess’s attitude and demeanour “Mr ST, the fugitive?” he asked
“Yes, she was loaned to the state department five months ago as punishment for breaking Mr ST’s jaw” Steve informed him.
“Why would she be punished for that?” Mike asked surprised. He would have thought she would be awarded for that.
“It does not matter, she is a snake!” Petrose snapped. “Can we discuss how we get you out of this mess?” he added.
“I’m afraid it is going to be a tough case, the state has a very strong case against you Mike” Steve said. For the first time in his career he did not trust that he could win a case, the state had an airtight case against Mike.
“I did nothing wrong, why on earth would I sell drugs, worse to kids!” Mike exclaimed. He hated drugs more than anything, he saw them destroy his cousin and there was nothing he could do to help him.
“I don’t know man, they have multiple footages of you and your employees. Two of them have turned state witnesses. It’s not good” Steve warned. If he did not personally know Mike, he would also be convinced that he was indeed the syndicate boss.
“That’s insane!” Mike exclaimed. He always lived his life the best he could.
“That snake set you up. She was probably bought off by our competitors” Petrose said angrily.
Steve shook his head, a lot did not make sense to him with this case “I don’t know, she does not strike me as the type that could be bought” he said.
“Everyone has a price Advocate, everyone” Petrose said, getting irritated. “In just four hours, we have lost ten business contracts” he added. He wanted to squeeze the life out of Jess that moment.
“Uncle is right, let’s focus on my case right now, I will deal with Commander Miles even if it’s the last thing I ever do” Mike vowed with a bleeding heart.
That evening Jessica sat on her couch, watching the television absentminded. All the news channels were reporting how she and the state department took down the syndicate including its boss Mike Spencer the CEO of Spencer Tours. The photographs of Mike and his employees in handcuffs being escorted to the police van played over too many times. The business world was publicly condemning Mike and his company, a lot had pulled out their business from them. Her job at the state department was completed, the president had personally called to praise her work and she was free to return to her unit. Finally she could have her normal life back but somehow she just didn’t feel right. There was no relief, Mike’s expression was playing over in her head. After spending a lot of intimate time with him, she got too close to him for comfort and almost lost herself. There were times she wanted him to be innocent but the evidence she herself collected proved her wrong each time. “Seriously Jessica, you can’t be sympathetic to criminals. Snap off it” she reprimanded herself.
The following week, Mike Spencer was sentenced to five years in prison. The state had an air tight case and proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was indeed the syndicate boss and the mastermind behind the syndicate. To Jessica’s relief, she had done such a great job with getting the evidence on Mike, she did not have to testify in court. She was not afraid of a lot of things but she did not attend the court, the thought of meeting Mike’s betrayed gaze or Benny’s or his uncle’s disapproval strangely scared the living daylights out of her. She just could not shake the feeling that Mike was going to prison with a part of her, a feeling she had no idea how to overcome.
