“Oh God,” Nicki moaned. “He wasn’t kidding.” She looked down at her feet. “And why did I choose today to wear heels?” They’d made it down to the first floor of the hospital, stumbling through chunks of plaster, sheetrock, and ceiling tiles. Water pipes on the second floor had ruptured and flooded the stairwell, soaking their shoes. As for the streets, the one leading to the parking garage should have been a strong indication of what they would find.
