Chapter Eight Phil was happy to escape Bob’s watchful eye and strangely excited for what could be a dangerous excursion. “Thanks for not letting that guy kill me.” I walked fast but with his long legs, Phil kept my pace, glancing around as wove through the streets. “Bob? He’s harmless. Besides he wouldn’t hurt a fly, much less a kid.” I pointed to the parking structure, where Bob paid for vehicle storage. Phil chuckled. “You keep making these kid comments, just how old do you think I am?” “Old enough to know better than to get involved but too young to realize you should let your mother know where you are after dark.” Phil snorted. “My mother gave up that right the minute she left me and my pops fourteen years ago for ‘a better life.’ That was her phrase, not mine.” I stopped short
