This story has a simple origin.
If the 5E is extreme, then they must fly in all conditions. When any other outfit is safely grounded, the Night Stalkers still have a promise to keep to their military customers: Any time, anywhere.
That means they must train to fly in those conditions as well.
In fact, some of the very first Night Stalkers deaths were pilots trying to push the envelope of night flying—before the advent of night-vision goggles. And much of what we possess of NVG gear was initially developed for and by the Night Stalkers.
