Chapter 4: First Day
“You came back,” Dane glowed, welcoming me into his apartment.
“You didn’t expect me to?”
“Sometimes they never come back. Step inside. We have lots of things to accomplish today.”
I entered the apartment again. It seemed cleaner somehow, more organized. I could see the floor, and I asked, “Did you clean?”
“Wanda was here last evening. She tries to do her best with my mess. Sometimes the mess overwhelms her.”
There was an empty desk with faux Chippendale claws and two recliners. The desk was empty except for a pad of yellow paper and an empty vegetable can filled with pens and pencils. “Will I be working there?” I pointed at the desk.
“Only if you want to.”
