Chapter 7

2114 Words
Thirteen's POV I quickly toss another table on its side and kick it as hard as I can towards the guys running in through the door. It slides across the floor and crashes into their legs just as they raised their guns, knocking the first few in front to the floor and temporarily blocking the doorway. I grab a couple of the guns that were dropped and toss one to Chase and one to Cody...I'm not too keen on giving Devin a gun at the moment...or ever. Gunshots pierce the table and walls around us. Chase and Cody fire back hitting several of the guys in the doorway. I hear a scream from the other side of the restaurant. I look over from behind the table only to see that waitress, what was her name Eleanor? She's hiding under one of the tables, tears streaming down her cheeks as gunshots are exchanged and several of them come a little too close to hitting her. I let out a groan before jumping to my feet and running towards her. Zero's voice in the back of my head telling me that she's a civilian and we're not supposed to let any of them die. Can she please be an exception? As soon as I'm close enough to her I flip the table she's hiding under and duck down behind it with her. Was that really so hard for her to do? Unfortunately for me, I forget one very important fact. Garrett wants me, not them. So where I go, the bullets follow...and I have no weapons. I grab one of the glasses off the floor next to me and shatter it against the table I'm backed against. I grab the glass shards, not caring if they cut into my fingers a little, and begin throwing them like knives, each one sticking into its target. I shatter another glass and grab the biggest piece, jumping out from behind the table as two guys approach rapidly. I jam the knife into the one guy's throat before he can even fire his gun. I grab the other guy's arm and slam his wrist into the edge of the table forcing him to release his hold on the gun. He throws his other arm forward, his fist slamming into the side of my jaw. I clench my jaw as the metallic taste of blood fills my mouth. I bring my leg up and my knee goes up into his stomach, robbing him of air. I swing my leg out again and trip him so he's now on the floor lying on his back. I lift up my foot one more time before slamming it back down on his neck, crushing his windpipe. I see it out of the corner of my eye as it flies through the air. I have barely enough time to raise my arm and block the glass from hitting me in the head. It shatters when it makes contact with my arm and I feel the shards sticking into my arm, just great, it couldn't hit the one already in the sling. "Thirteen!" I hear one of the boys call out in warning. I see Garrett pull his arm back and throw another glass at me. Before I have a chance to react, I'm pulled back into a hard chest. I hear the glass shatter and a few shards fly over Cody's shoulders as he shields me with his body. He pulls me quickly back behind the table. The waitress still cowering down wide-eyed and shaking. Gunshots continue to echo out, mixed with the occasional scream from the waitress, or the occasional curse words from the boys and me. And somehow, my hood has miraculously stayed on. Suddenly all is quiet. I slowly get to my feet and look around at the mess we've made. Devin kicks at the body of one of the guards before shooting it twice more. I roll my eyes. "Feel better?" I question sarcastically. "Immensely." "Garrett got away," Chase growls in annoyance. "Must've fled after we gunned down the last couple guys." "No surprise there." I sigh as I run a hand over my face. I glance over at Cody whose shirt is now torn and bloody. His eyes meet mine. "Take off your shirt and turn around," I order simply as I grab one of the linen napkins from the floor. He looks at me strangely for a second before complying without any complaints. I wince slightly when I see the glass shards stuck in his back and shoulders. "Couldn't wait for an excuse to get him to take his shirt off could you?" I pull a glass shard out of Cody's back and spin around quickly, letting it slip from my fingers before turning back to Cody. I hear Devin let out a yelp of pain. "That's not cool Thirteen." "Oh please, it wasn't even that big." I scoff and Cody's shoulders shake slightly as he tries to hold in his laughter. I pull out a bigger shard and Cody winces, I press the napkin against the bleeding cut. "Sorry," I mutter quietly. I work quickly to get the rest out and Devin, Chase, and Jason begin to clean up the area as best they can before calling Zero to send a cleanup team for the rest. Just as I pull out the last shard I feel a sharp pain in my leg. I look down only to see a glass shard sticking out of the back of my calf. My eyes immediately snap over to Devin. He's lining up bullet casings from biggest to smallest on the counter. I glare at him and he smiles smugly at me, so I throw the shard back...at his line of bullet casings, knocking over every single one of them. His mouth drops open in shock as he stares at the casings as if I just shot and killed his dog. "Why would you do that?" I roll my eyes and ignore him. I take a step forward only to be grabbed by my upper arm and spun around to face Cody. He holds up my arm and begins to pull the glass shards out as I had done for him a moment before. I stay still... Till Devin comes up behind me and shoves me into Cody, causing his arms to quickly wrap around my waist. Neither one of us makes a move, and then Devin starts singing. "There you see her. Sitting there across the way. She don't got a lot to say, but there's something about her. And you don't know why, but you're dying to try. You wanna kiss the girl." Devin puckers his lips up but makes the mistake of coming way too close. Not to me, but to Cody. His arms are off my waist in a split second and Devin's on the floor laughing a second later as Cody towers over him, but Devin keeps on singing through his fit of laughter. "Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do. Possible she wants you too, there is one way to ask her. It don't take a word, not a single word. Go on and kiss the girl." "Hate to interrupt this lovely moment," Jason speaks up just as Cody pulls his fist back to punch Devin in the face. "But what are we supposed to do with her?" I follow his finger as he points to the waitress. Crap I forgot about her. She's just standing there, her arms wrapped around herself as she shakes, her eyes wide as she looks at us. "We could kill her," I reply simply. Seriously something about her is not sitting right with me. Cody and Devin just roll their eyes at me and Chase gives me the look a concerned parent gives their child. Jason says nothing and I shrug innocently. She, however, gawks openly and begins to take slow steps backward. Smart girl. "You know we can't do that," Chase says. "She's a civilian Thirteen." "Fine." I agree with a wave of my hand. "Then let's just let her go and send her on her merry way." "She's been seen with us, she'll get killed before the day's up." "Hundreds of civilians have been seen with us, what does it matter? Besides what on earth would we do with her anyway?" "We'd take her back to the house with us." "My house? Yeah, not happening." I growl threateningly. "If anything I'll buy her an apartment on the outskirts of town." "She'll get killed there." Chase deadpans. "I know, that's the beauty of it." "I'm in agreement with Thirteen on this one." Jason finally speaks up. I shoot Chase a smug look. "I mean we don't know a damn thing about this girl." "Thank you, Jason." I say, my tone of voice rather smug as I stare defiantly at Chase. I see a muscle in his jaw twitch. "She's a civilian and we can't just leave her by herself to fend off anyone who comes her way." "Why the hell not?" "Because we aren't you," Cody says. His tone of voice is even, but there's the slightest bit of malice hidden behind it. I turn my gaze onto him but his expression is blank, completely blank. I guess now I know how he felt before. I just shake my head at him. "Fine, do whatever you want." I toss my hood off and run a hand through my hair. "Take her back to my house. I'll call Henri and tell him to set up another bedroom." I pull my phone out of my pocket and head towards the door, my feet crunching on the broken glass. My phone rings twice before Henri picks up. "Yes, Miss Kingston?" "I'm going to need an extra bedroom set up." "What went wrong?" "Well, it's a long story." "I have plenty of time." I let out a sigh before quickly explaining everything, trying my best not to leave anything out. "So you would like me to set up the smallest room possible." I let a smile grace my lips. "You're the best Henri." I end the call and slip my phone back in my pocket. But not before I notice the 32 missed calls from Zero. Not like I'm in a rush to call him back. I walk back inside the restaurant. "Thank you, thank you, thank you." I walk in to see waitress girl repeatedly thanking Chase. As if he's the one offering up his house to this girl. I let out a scoff. "It's not us you should be thanking," Jason grumbles in annoyance. "It should be her, it's her house after all." He points over to me. She turns her gaze to me, already mumbling her thanks but she suddenly stops when she sees me. Her eyes go wide and lets out a gasp of shock before opening and closing her mouth. I stare at her in confusion. What the hell is her problem? I run my free hand through my hair only to freeze midway through. "Shit." I curse under my breath in realization. I don't have my damn hood on. My fist clenches in frustration. How could I be so damn stupid? "M-Miss Kings-ston?" She stutters, shock spread across her face. I see the boys faces' wrinkle in confusion. "How the hell does she know your name?" "Why does she know your name?" "Who told her your name?" "What the hell?" The last question comes from Devin as he stares at me, waiting for my response along with the rest of them. I groan. "Let's just go," I mutter. "No, I'd rather get an explanation," Jason says. I flip my hood back up on my head and pull it low, hiding my face once again. Waitress girl looks between all of us with confusion before pointing at me. "You don't know who she is?" She asks, looking at them like they're all insane. To be fair they didn't even know my last name until recently. "No," Cody replies. "Do tell us." He stares right at me as he says this and I glare at him. He's daring me to intervene, to say something, anything. "She's Miss Kingston." She starts as if it's perfectly obvious to everyone. "As in CEO of Kings International Industries." Immediately all their eyes look as if they're going to pop out of their skulls. "As in the multi-million dollar company?" "No." I interrupt, answering for her. I walk over the glass once again and stand in the doorway, waiting for them to follow. "Kingston as in the multi-billion dollar company."
