Chapter One - When in Paris
Samuel’s P.O.V “Hey handsome why so blue?” I hear a voice say from behind the bar I was sitting alone in a bar, in a Country I have never been too but it was the furthest away I could get from where I call home. I was from California where I was spending my life with my wife, we were planning on having a family, living happily ever after, well that was how it was meant to be but for her it was all lies. She was having an affair behind my back for two years…two f*****g years and I never knew, she never wanted a family…never wanted me. And now here I was sitting in a bar, alone in the middle of a bar in Paris. I finally looked up to see who the voice was coming from. I was met with a beautiful red head, with the most amazing blue eyes and freckles. She was smiling at me, a very beautiful smile. “Trying to heal a broken heart. Probably could have picked somewhere less romantic to do that uh?” I said faking a smile “Yes probably…” she giggled slipping me a shot glass over “It is on me, you look like you need it.” She added “That obvious uh?” I asked and she nodded “You aren’t from around here are you?” I added “No, from Scotland here to study abroad for a year.” She smiled “I am Nicola.” She added “Samuel.” I smiled She leant against the top the bar, leaning on her elbows, resting her face in her hands and looked at me through those baby blues. “So you wanna talk about your broken heart? I am guessing it has something to do with the wedding ring you have been spinning in circles for the last half an hour?” she asked “Yes…married for four years, together for eight and she had been having an affair for the last two years. Everything she said was a lie, we were meant to be trying for a family…another lie, and she was still taking the pill in secret.” I said with no emotion I was all cried out to be honest. I was at the stage where I never felt a damn thing. All this happened less that forty eight hours ago but by now I was numb. “Really? Well she sounds like a bitch.” She said “I am sorry she done that to you Samuel.” She added reaching over and giving my hand a squeeze. “Nothing I can do about it now.” I shrugged, pulling my hand away from her. She gave me a small smile, pulling away and going to serve other people. I felt bad for how I reacted towards her but I really wasn’t in the mood to talk. Plus I don’t exactly have must trust in females at this moment. I sighed, grabbing my drink and downing it. I turned to where she was, chatting and laughing with the customers, speaking French to the ones who never understood English. I couldn’t help but watch after her, she really was beautiful with a beautiful laugh too. She seemed perfect for doing this job. Once I knew she was done with her other customers before motioning her back to me for another drink. “Ready for another?” she smiled “Yes, a double please?” I said “Just don’t be getting to drunk OK?” She said “Can’t make any promises.” I said honestly She headed off, grabbing me another drink, sitting it down along with a glass of water too. “Someone has got to look after you.” She smiled I gave her a small smile, nodding. It was probably best she was keeping an eye on me because if not I would just keep going until I had no clue what I was doing and probably get lost in Paris and not remember my hotel. **** The place had died down, it was getting later and the bar was shutting in half an hour. There was only me and on other person left. I took her advice and watched what I was doing with my drinking and honestly I wasn’t just still here for the drink, I was still here because I was enjoying Nicola’s company, she was making me smile which with the way I was feeling right now never thought it was possible. “It would seem you are the last one standing.” She said appearing in front of me “It would seem that way.” I laughed “I need to close up now, get tidied up before I lock up go home.” She said “Can I help? Then maybe um…walk you home?” I asked softly I never wanted her walking home herself, it was two A.M. and dark, I don’t know what the streets of Paris are like at this time. “If you like, depends where your hotel is. If it is the opposite way from my place then I will make my way home.” She laughed I told her the name of my hotel and luckily it was the same direction as her place. I helped her get cleaned up since she was the only one here which I found sort of crap…one person for the entire place? There was three staff when I arrived but two finished early, leaving Nicole to finish up, clean up and lock up what is that all about? Luckily it only took an hour for us to get cleaned up working together. She grabbed her things, locking up behind her. “So tell me how you are doing Samuel?” she asked linking her arm through mine “Not so good…” I said sadly “It can only get better right?” she said “I don’t think so somehow.” I said shaking my head “How long are you here? Maybe I can make you feel better.” She said “I don’t know yet, until I am ready to back home I guess.” I said shrugging “And how do you plan on doing that?” I added “I can be a very fun girl.” She smiled widely “I am sure you are but trust me nothing is going to make me feel better.” I said “Challenge accepted…” she said smirking I chuckled, shaking my head. She is setting herself up for failing because no matter how fun…how sweet and how beautiful she is, nothing is going to make me feel better. Nothing is going to pull me out of the dark place I am currently in not this easy or quickly. “It is a beautiful city isn’t it?” she said as we walked “Haven’t really noticed to be honest.” I said “Well open your eyes Samuel.” She said nudging me I really wasn’t in the mood to notice the beauty around me to be honest. “I have a free day tomorrow, you are coming to meet me and I am going to show you the city in style and you do not have a say in the matter. I will meet you at your hotel at ten.” She said I went to refuse but she gave me a look that made me keep my mouth shut and nod in agreement. I walked her to her door and she hugged me goodbye. “Things will get better, broken hearts can be healed, take that from someone who has had her heart broken.” she whispered in my ear before pulling away I gave her a smile, she kissed my cheek and headed in, reminding me off our plans tomorrow. I waited until she was inside before heading to my hotel. It was going to be weird sleeping alone but guess I will need to get used to it.
