I wake up and jump out of bed. I’m actually surprised that I was able to sleep at all. I look at my clock by my bedside and notice that it is a little after six. I run into the bathroom. I had already packed my bags from the day before. I have waited almost five years for this day. As I leave the bathroom, I see Shane entering our room. “Hey, bud you ready to get this show on the road?” I look at him. Since I told him everything that is going on in my life, we have become closer. We are now more like brothers instead of roommates. He has helped me hold myself together and not do anything drastic by any means.

Last year was really hard for me when I found out that Todd was in a serious relationship from Avia. She had told me not to worry much about it because she was positive that he still was in love with me. I don’t know if she was trying to make me feel better or not. I almost committed suicide. I had starved myself for a week then cut deep into my veins. Shane had found me and saved my life. He had nursed me back to health without saying a word. He didn’t report me to the Council which they would have automatically kicked me out of my job. Instead, he let me cry and get it all out of my system. He had assured me that the Moon Goddess chooses our mates for a reason.

He reminds me so much of Avia and Molly with the Moon Goddess talk. I think it’s just a saying to keep them pushing forward. Since then and seeing how much I had hurt him when trying to end my own life. I promised myself to never do any of that again. That was the same time Shane opened up to me about losing his whole family. They were lone wolves, never hurt anyone. His family was that way for a very long time, generations. Until his mother decided it was time to have a pack to help take care of their five pups. Shane was the oldest but at sixteen was not trained enough to keep them safe after his father died.

She had moved them into a pack called the Sun Crest Pack. I guess the Beta of the pack wanted his mom and she fought him off of her. The Beta was so pissed because she-wolves were looked down upon in this pack that she was beaten to death. Shane not being able to protect his family had to witness them abusing his siblings and killing them in front of him. He was no match for the Alpha’s team. When it was his turn, he got lose and killed the one guard they sent to retrieve him. He had run all the way to the Werewolf Council and told his story. I felt bad for him. He had it much worse than I did and here I was crying on his shoulder about my mate who was very much alive.

Coming back from my memories I look at Shane. “You ready to meet my pack and family?” I grin “My mom and dad are going to love you more than me, you know.” Shane laughs. “Well, I am good looking and a gem if I do say so myself.” I smile happy that he had decided to go with me even if I know it’s because he wants to make sure I don’t do anything stupid. I look over at the time. “s**t, are plane leaves in an hour. Come on we have to go.” I say rushing to put on my shoes and grabbing my bags. I look up Shane is already holding the door open holding his own bags. “Always waiting on you.” I let out a playful growl as we run down the hallway to the cab that’s waiting outside.

When we get to the airport which will take us to the town right outside my pack lands. I start to feel nervous. Planes don’t bother me but being cramped inside one with over a hundred others gets on my nerves. Last time I was seated next to a beautiful girl who thought I would help her join the mile high club. A shiver rushes up my spine. Ever since I had found my mate, I didn’t want anyone else. I could admire their beauty but I didn’t want them which pissed a lot of she-wolves and humans off. I just don’t care. Even Shane understands since I told him everything. He never once pushes any females on me. Actually, he helped get them off of me and takes them to bed with a smile on his face. At least I’m good at attracting them and he takes care of them.

As we are pointed to where our seats are he lets me have the window seat as he takes the middle. An elder human male ends up sitting on the outside seat. A sigh of relief leaves me as I don’t have to worry about being grouped on this flight. Now I can’t wait to get home and see my mom and dad. Five years is just to long of a wait. I lean back with a smile on my face thinking of my moms cooking as sleep takes me over once more. I couldn’t sleep last night because I was to hopeful of what today would bring. It’s Todds eighteenth birthday and I can’t wait to see him. I float into dreamland thinking of what our life will be like when I finally get to have him.

I’m woken up by Shane shaking me. “Come on bud, it’s time to rise and shine. We are here.” I open my eyes and just look at him confused as to why he is waking me from my slumber. Then I remember. I’m home. I jump up as Shane is handing me my things from the overhead compartment. I know I must have a smile a mile wide as he looks at me. “Anxious, are you?” I grunt and walk by him. “You would be to if you knew my mothers cooking and my dads easy going nature.” I walk off the plane and to the luggage claims. Shane catches up to me. “Yah, I cannot wait to meet them. You’ve told me so many stories that I feel like I already know them.” I just smile and nod. “They are the best.”

When we walk out the front of the airport, I’m surprised speechless seeing my parents standing there waiting for me. I see the bright smiles and open arms as my mother throws herself at me. Giving me a bear hug, I pick her up and twirl her around. “My baby…. You’re finally home.” She cries out as I laugh. I have missed her pine scent these last five years. “Okay, put me done you bid luge.” She says slapping me on my back as I lower her, I look up into my father’s eyes and see his tears of joy. As soon as my mom is clear he cups my face in his hands. “I was so worried about you.” He pulls me into his warmth and kisses me on my forehead.

My parents have always been this way with me. I am their only child and the love they have for me shows. I have never been embarrassed by it. When we step back, I look up to Shane who has a sad smile on his face. Probably thinking of his own family. “Mom, dad. I would like you to meet my friend Shane. Shane, may I introduce my mother Star and my father Drake Sr. As they shake hands, I hear them saying their hello’s and nice to meet you. My mom is the one who takes charge. “Come let’s get you boys home and fed. Today is a big day.” I feel my nerves coming back full force. I’m now starting to worry about meeting my mate after all this time. What will he think when he finds out I ran away because of him?

The drive to the pack lands takes two hours as I sit back, I listen to my mom and dad getting to know Shane and how he became an Enforcer and how we have been thick as thieves ever since. I see looks of my mom and dad as they give each other a look when they find out he was a lone wolf and what happened to his family. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that they are hiding something. I shake my head and return to look out the window as my thoughts return to Todd. That last time he was at my apartment door begging me to open up and let him in. I let out a sigh and my mother looks at me through the rearview mirror as she drives. “Everything will be okay, Drake. Trust in the Moon Goddess.” I give her a small smile. If she knew how much distain I was holding in my heart for the Moon Goddess she would probably beat my ass.

We reach my mom and dads house which is still on the outskirts of the pack lands. As I exit, I ask the only question that comes to mind. “Why haven’t you guys moved to the Elders square?” My dad just smiles at me as my mom answers. “This is our home. It’s where all our memories of all our good times. Why would we leave it?” That is when it dawns on me how much I made my parents suffer by leaving them. I sigh as I walk up to the house and open the front door and am thrusted back into a time when I was the happiest. So, this is what it feels like to come home where you know you are loved. I lead the way in as I hear my father. “Shane can stay in the guest room next to yours. Care to show him please son?” I start for the stairs. “Sure, thing dad.”

“Your parents are great.” Shane tells me as I open the door to the guest bedroom and show him in. “Yes, they are. It’s probably the only reason I haven’t gone crazy yet.” Shane knows my whole life story even about my very first s****l experience that I have never told Emerson or River about. I just feel connected to Shane on a deeper level. Not s****l or anything but as family. He has heard all my darkest moments and has never judged me for them. “My room is to the right of yours. The bathroom is on the left.” I show him after putting down his bags. I open my door and throw my stuff on my bed.

Shane follows me in and sees all the medals and trophies I have. “Wow your team really did good in Alpha Camp. I have never seen so many achievements in one place.” I walk up by where he is standing. “Yah, we work really well together. Emerson with his strength and insight, River is very smart and a nerd. He could give Emerson a run for the title but would never dream of it. We grew up together, sticking with each other though think and thin.” He gives me a smile. “Family.” Is all he said as I nod my head. I see the sadness once again in his eyes. “Come on I’m sure my mom has food prepared for us.” I said as my stomach growls and we laugh heading down to the kitchen.

We eat our fill and have a great time catching up. When our late lunch is over, I help clear off the table as my dad takes Shane out to show him some moves. Somehow, they had gotten into the conversation of fighting. I’m in the kitchen as I watch my mother looking out the window at them. As I come up beside her, she glances at me. “So, are you two just friends or more?” my mother asks me. I look at her and I can’t tell what she means by that. “If you’re asking if we are in a s****l relationship the answer is no. But he is more than a friend, he is a brother, family to me.” I say as I watch my mother closely.

She nods her head. “He reminds me of something and I can’t put my finger on it. I’m glad he was there for you when you couldn’t be here. I nod my head. “If it wasn’t for him, I would be dead now.” She gives me a sharp look. “I know things have been rough for you. I think that they may get rougher.” I look at her not knowing what she is talking about. It all becomes clear with her next words. “Avia invited us to Todd’s birthday party. It’s only going to be family and a couple of close friends.” I nod my head. “Are you and dad going?” She shakes her head. “No, we have stayed away so we don’t make a mess of things. I love all of them but we, your father and I. we both knew we would not be able to hold ourselves together watching Todd do the things he has done. I think it’s best that Shane stays here if you decide to go.”

Now it’s four hours later and I still don’t understand what my mother meant by the words she said about Todd. She wouldn’t tell me when I asked her and it made my heart drop to the pit of my stomach. What could have happened. If it was bad, I know Emerson or Avia would have said something to me. Except I told them I didn’t want to know about his relationships. That is for him to choose not me. I had stopped and got him flowers and a hand made leather bond journal. He always loved drawing and writing down his thoughts. I smile hoping he likes the book.

I bring to car to a stop at the lake. Things have changed so much as now there is a dirt road leading to the waterfalls that our pack is named after, Silver Waterfalls Pack. As I open the door, I smell his sweet scent of an open strawberry field. I take a deep breath and my heart quickens. As I take my first step towards them, I notice that he caught a whiff of my scent as his eyes lock onto mine. I stop frozen to place as doubts rush through my mind. Even at this distance I see the tears form in his eyes. I take one step forward and my heart sinks as he turns and runs away from me.
