"Look guys, most of the story is not even mine to tell, it's Mathew's. He's my best friend and I promised him I wouldn't tell his secrets to anyone."
"We already know his secret though, so you can tell us", Sebastian said. "Come on, we just told you things about our world that no other human knows about. Surely, you can tell us a bit about you and Mathew."
"Guys, I really can't", I said with guilty eyes.
"Okay, okay", Susan said. "At least tell us why you two aren't dating. You're obviously in love with him."
"What? No, I'm not. Susan, that's not true. Mathew and I are just friends. Besides, he's engaged!" I could feel my face getting hotter and I had to look down to avoid everyone's gaze.
The three of them started laughing.
"Are you talking about that mean girl who keeps harassing you at the office?", Susan asked while laughing.
I nodded my head.
"Mathew is way too nice for a girl like that", Sebastian said while he and Susan continued laughing.
"You should however know Elizabeth that landing a werewolf is not an easy task. Most magical creatures have a fated mate and werewolves are the most love obsessed and possessive creatures when it comes to mates", Susan said.
"What are fated mates?", I asked her.
"Magical creatures are granted fated mates. Unlike humans, we don't have to go around dating and hoping to find the right person. Our mate is our other half, they make us better. We always yearn to be close to them and will do anything to keep them safe and happy", Audrey said.
"But how do you know you've met your mate? I mean, can it take some time to know that someone you've known for a while is actually your mate?", I asked them.
"No, we know instantly that someone is our mate. Werewolves will be told by their wolves that someone is their mate, inklings will see a golden thread form between them and their destined mate and the eyes of seers glow when they meet their mates. It all differs amongst supernatural creatures, but one thing all fated mates have in common is a heavenly scent that only their other half can smell and an incredibly strong pull towards their mate. My grandma said when she met my grandfather he smelled like a rainy day with a pinch of freshly cut grass. Apparently that smell drove her insane." Audrey was chuckling.
I got visibly sad when she said this. I guess a part of me was hoping that I was Mathew's mate. I felt guilty for thinking this way. I didn't want to feel this way over my best friend.
Susan looked back and noticed my face. "Sometimes magical creatures take chosen mates", she said.
"Oh yeah, they do", Sebastian and Audrey chimed in.
"If a magical creature doesn't want their fated mate or feels like they've been waiting too long, they choose someone they like and make that person their chosen mate", Sebastian said.
"So they settle? That's what you're saying?", I asked them.
"Well the thing is, our fated mates make us stronger and better in every way so it's always better to be with them", Audrey said.
I was trying not to be affected by all this fated mate talk, but I just couldn't hide my disappointment. The mood in the car had even changed.
"Why don't you tell us about your family", Audrey was trying to change the mood.
"Oh, I come from Michigan. My family actually still lives there", I answered her in a fake happy tone.
"Why didn’t you go back to your family after losing your job?", Sebastian asked.
"I wanted to stay in New York and hopefully find another job. Plus, they kind of stopped talking to me."
"The human girl just got even more interesting", Susan said. "Why did they stop talking to you?"
"Well, my parents are convinced the reason my life fell apart is because I met Mathew", I said to them. "They think things took a turn for the worst after I met him."
"Are they right?", Susan asked.
"Of course not. People lose their jobs and apartments and reputation all the time without any good reason", I said in a huff.
"Sounds like you think they're right", Sebastian said.
"I don't! I think I'm the bad omen", I said in a shaky voice. "I think he's the one who needs to stay away from me. If it weren't for me, he would still be here. It's my fault that he got kidnapped and I need to get him back".
After I said this they all got suspiciously quiet.
"Elizabeth there's something we need to tell you about what happened yesterday", Audrey said.
"Okay. What is it?"
"The blonde woman who came to the office is a witch. We didn't sense a lot of power emanating from her so we didn't think she was much of a threat. However, when she and Jerry told everyone to leave, I could sense ill and vile intentions from them. It was all directed towards you", Audrey said.
"What?", I said with a shocked expression. "Then why did you guys leave me there. Why didn't you warn me or try to drag me out if you had to? You just left me there knowing I was in danger?"
"Elizabeth, you need to understand that most supernatural creatures living in the human world are in hiding. If we tried to intervene, we could've put our lives and all our species in danger", Sebastian said.
"Okay. I guess I understand...then what made you guys go back to the office", I asked them.
"Audrey refused to leave. She said she would only leave when she saw you step out of the building. She was our ride back home, so we had to stay as well", Susan said.
All three of them burst out in laughter.
"I'm kidding. All the magical creatures in the office wanted to make sure you were safe. We all waited in our cars for you."
Audrey gave me a guilty look. "When we saw Mathew rush into the building we knew something was wrong and we knew that you were probably used as bait to get to him."
"We heard all the commotion, but we still couldn't risk entering the building. Most of us had to hold Audrey back because she kept wanting to charge in there", Sebastian said.
"After a few minutes of silence, we decided it was safe enough to enter the building. I couldn't sense those ill and vile intentions anymore so I figured Jerry and that witch were gone", Audrey said.
I had to wrap my head around what they just said. I was in shock, but I also understood. From what they've told me, most magical creatures are on the run and they're trying to find safety in the human world. It was unfair of me to get angry at them for not putting themselves in harm's way just to save me.
I took a deep breath and held Audrey's hand.
"It couldn't have been easy for you guys to tell me this so thank you. And I can't imagine how scared you guys were entering that building knowing that you may get hurt. That wasn't an easy thing to do and most people would've just left, but you guys came back for me. You saved my life and now you're helping me to find my best friend. That's more than I could ask for."
Audrey started tearing up and I could see Susan holding back her tears. Sebastian looked disappointed in himself.
"I don't want you guys to ever feel guilty about you've had to do to survive. I don't even know half of your stories, but I can already tell that you've been through some terrible things", I said as I hugged Audrey.
"You're one heck of a good person, Elizabeth. There's no denying that", Sebastian said.

Mathew's POV
The moment we got to the foul smelling cave, I heard someone chanting in a weird language again and then everything went dark.
I woke up chained in silver and surrounded by wolfsbane. I knew this didn't affect me so I started pulling at the chains to get free but I couldn't. It was like something was sucking my strength.
These chains and this place have been touched by witches. I can feel it. That is why we cannot get free, my wolf said. He was furious.
What do they want with me?, I said to him..
They probably want to kill us or steal our powers or both, he said with a low growl.
We need to find a way to get out here and find Elizabeth. She's hurt badly and all alone, I shouted at my wolf in my head.
He started whimpering as we thought about Elizabeth laying on the floor covered in wounds and blood.
"I see you're awake, young wolf", an old wrinkled woman with familiar blue eyes and white hair said to me.
"Who are you? What do you want with me?", I said with a low growl.
"Don't tell me you don't recognise me, Mathew. It's me, Sabrina", she said with a menacing smile.
"Sabrina? Why do you look so old? What happened to you?", I said with a shocked voice.
"Oh this is my true form", Sabrina said. "There is no need for me to hide when I'm in my coven's lair."
I was staring at her in shock.
"What? Don't think I'm hot anymore?", Sabrina asked sarcastically. "That's the problem with you unmated wolves, any pretty thing will get your attention. Well this time it may have cost you your life. Depending on how strong you are, maybe you'll live to see the dawn of a new era in the supernatural realm."
"When I get my hands on you I'm going to rip you to shreds, Sabrina. I swear to you!", I said as I shouted at her.
She started laughing hysterically!
"Scream and toss all you want, young wolf. You're not going anywhere. But don't worry, if you die soon enough, maybe you'll get to see your little girlfriend. I just sent Jerry back into the human world to end her for good."
I started jerking my whole body trying to get free, but nothing was working. They had tied me onto a table and tied each hand and leg on the corners of the table. I was pulling the chains with all my strength but they didn't budge. I started roaring violently and shaking the metal table. I could feel it starting to crack.
Sabrina gave me shocked, but also excited look.
"Let me get this straight", Sabrina said as she got within inches close to my face. "I've chained you in silver and wolfsbane and enchanted those chains with my strongest spell and not only are you wide awake, but your wolf is still with you?"
I just gave a low growl.
"I think we're going to have a lot of fun with you!", she said with excitement in her voice.
Jerry suddenly stepped into the room. His face was back to normal. His skull wasn't caved in anymore. What the hell was happening?
"Sabrina, I couldn't find her", he said with a worried look.
"What do you mean you couldn't find her? In her condition she wouldn't have been able to move, let alone leave the office. Did you even try to find her, you stupid troll?", Sabrina said as stomped towards Jerry.
"I searched the entire building, Sabrina. She wasn't there. I promise you!"
I gave a relieved sigh when I heard him. I knew he was talking about Elizabeth. She was safe. Someone had found her and helped her.
"You said there are no magical creatures working in that office, right?", Sabrina asked Jerry.
"Yes, Sabrina. I tried making it easy enough for magical creatures to get a job there, but none ever showed up."
"And yet, you had an entire wolf walking in and out that building and didn't notice a thing? Do I need to set you on fire again, troll?", Sabina said as she kicked Jerry in the stomach.
"No, please Sabrina. I don't know what happened. He must've masked his scent whenever he came to the office. That's the only explanation." Jerry was lying on the floor crouched into a ball.
"How can I trust you, troll?", Sabrina said. "How many magical creatures have escaped from right under your useless nose?"
Jerry was now kneeling on the muddy ground, looking defeated. Sabrina rolled her eyes.
"Did you sense any magic when you searched for her in that building?", Sabrina asked him.
"Only small remnants of magic, Sabrina. Nothing for us to worry about", Jerry answered.
"You i***t! I will tell you what we can worry about!" Sabrina said as she gave Jerry another kick. "I want you to trace that magic and find the magical creature it belongs to. Hopefully, it will also lead you to the girl. Kill the girl and bring the magical creature to me. The girl's death will make it easier to drain this wolf's magic and I'll use that magical creature to track other creatures."
Jerry was about to say something else but Sabrina threw a glass at him. "Go right now you bumbling i***t!"
My wolf and I were getting worried again.
"Sabrina, you already have me", I said to her through gritted teeth. "You need to leave Elizabeth alone. Like you said before, she's just a human girl. She has nothing to do with this!"
"You're right. I could leave her alone. I could let her continue living her sad miserable human life, but what fun would that be?", Sabrina said while laughing menacingly. "The only reason her life is in danger is because you care for her. That's right, you being in her life is the reason she's going to die!"
Sabrina started walking towards the entrance of the cave.
"I'm going to let you ponder on that while I go summon my sisters. I can't wait for them to meet a werewolf as strong as you", she said as she left the room.
I couldn't believe this. Elizabeth was in danger because of me. If only I'd left her alone when she tried to end our friendship. If I'd listened to her, none of this would be happening.
Mathew, this woman's magic may be draining our power, but I think it's also brought back a memory of mine, my wolf said.
I couldn't focus on what he was saying. I felt overcome with guilt for putting Elizabeth in danger. I started thinking about her dark brown, thick, long and curly hair. I thought about her caramel skin and dark chocolate eyes. Her 5ft7 slender body had curves in all the right places. She has a perfectly sized butt and boobs that would make any guy go crazy. And her smile, gosh, she had the most angelic smile and the most beautiful plump lips to go with it.
Why was I thinking of Elizabeth in this way? She's my best friend. I've always tried not to cross that line. I don't want to take advantage of her. She's 23, only two years younger than me, but still. She's at the lowest point in her life. I just need to support her as a friend and not take advantage of the situation she's in.
Mathew, you need to stop daydreaming and listen to me, I heard my wolf growling. He snapped me out of my inappropriate thoughts.
What is it?, I said to him with an annoyed tone.
I said I remember something about myself. I remember my name, I heard my wolf say in my head.
Okay. What's you name, wolf?, I asked him.
I am Orion.
Do you remember anything else? Why did you come to me three months ago? Is it because I had just turned 25? I had so many questions to ask him.
I have always been with you Mathew. I know that our kind only get their wolves when they turn 18, but you and I have been together since the moment you were conceived. I do not know what awakened me, Orion said.
Okay then, do you remember anything about my birth parents? Why did they give me up? Who are they? Where are they?, I asked him.
Orion sighed.
I don't remember anything from before you were the age of 10. Perhaps the longer we are here, the more our memories will return to us.
We can't stay here, Orion, I said to him. Sabrina is going to kill us and she's currently hunting down Elizabeth.
You're right, Mathew. Let us find a way out of here.
Orion and I spent the night trying to escape. Nothing worked.
We suddenly heard footsteps coming closer to the cave we were in. It was Sabrina and six other old blue-eyed old women with white hair. They were all wearing white robes which, despite the cave being covered with vines, insects and mud, remained impeccably clean. One of them stepped forward. I could tell she was their leader. I don't know how, but I could sense an immense amount of energy coming from her.
"This is where the fun starts, young wolf", Sabrina said.
