"Well, I guess it's time for bed", Elizabeth's mom told us. She and her dad got up and prepared to leave, but they seemed to be hesitating about something.
"Sweetheart, we weren't sure if we should prepare one room or two rooms for you and Mathew."
Elizabeth looked at her mom and I could tell she was absolutely embarrassed that her mom would ask her that.
"Has she forgotten what happened in that field?", Orion laughed.
"Two rooms!"
"One room!"
We both shouted at the same time time.
Her parents looked at us to get the final answer.
"One room is fine", I repeated.
Elizabeth was about to protest, but I stopped her.
"The last time you and I slept in separate rooms, you left for that investigation and left me searching for you for three years."
She immediately closed her mouth after I said that. Her parents just laughed and went to their room.
"Did you know that you and I met exactly 2 years, 11 months and 25 days ago?" She suddenly informed me.
"Of course, I know", I replied as I chuckled.
She rolled her eyes at me. "I'm telling you this because in 5 days, you and I will have met precisely three years ago. I feel like that's important."
I kissed her neck with my tongue and only stopped when she started moaning. I couldn't risk her parents hearing her. Werewolves might be okay with our behaviour, but most humans would be shocked, especially her parents. "Then we'll celebrate", I insisted. "I'll get my servants on it. In 5 days we'll have a huge party. In fact, it can be your coronation!"
That seemed to have scared her. She got tense and avoided looking at me.
"I think it's kind of too soon for a coronation BUT I agree that we should celebrate. Maybe we can celebrate with our closest friends. I think that would be nice."
I didn't have a problem with her suggestion, but I needed to know why she didn't want a coronation. When her parents mentioned us getting married, she also didn't seem to keen about it.
"Okay....", I responded to her, "even if we don't have a formal coronation you know that you need to be introduced as the Werewolf Queen, right? That has to happen as soon as we get back."
She let out an exasperated sigh. "Mathew, we have a whole warlock to think about. You know I'm the Werewolf Queen. I know I'm the Werewolf Queen and so do all our friends. That's what matters. We need to focus on killing Raphael. All those other things can wait. We can have my coronation after we kill Raphael. How does that sound?"
I put her in my lap and wrapped my arms around her. "Then I guess we'll have to kill him really fast." I whispered in her ear.
"By the way", I decided to talk about something more pleasant, "I think you should join your dad and his golf buddies tomorrow."
She looked up at me in surprise.
"I'm serious", I repeated myself. "You've been out of the game for too long. This will help ease you back into the industry."
She looked at me nervously. "Are you sure?"
"Yea. You've been enthralled in the politics of the magical realm for the past three years. I'm sure a bunch of old stuffy lawyers will be no match for you."
A beautiful smile appeared on her face and she kissed my cheek.

Elizabeth's POV
"So....come on! Tell me how it went? Did you make those old geezers wet their diapers?"
Mathew was way too excited to hear about the day I spent with my parents at the golf club. I was able to hold my own, but I was definitely still a bit rusty. As much as I was able to charm them with my dazzling personality and confidence, there were still some things I wasn't able to get away with and on more than one occasion, I just had to bullshit my way through a conversation or hope mom and dad would come to my rescue.
I haven't been keeping up with the latest legislation, I have no idea what the most important deals are at the moment and I definitely haven't been keeping up with what's been happening in the human world. Mom and dad even asked me if I've been living under a rock. I was just hoping I didn't embarrass them.
When Mathew and I left my parents' home, they assured me I did well but I could tell they expected more from me. If those people had asked me about the politics between the different packs, which pack borders were still being contested, which covens were best at which spells or how not to anger a centaur, I would have aced it all.
Thank goodness Phoenix was there to scare some of the old men away when things were getting a bit too much.
Mathew was looking at me with such expectant eyes and I just didn't have the heart to tell him I am no longer the amazing lawyer I once was.
"Uhm, it was okay", I put on the best fake smile I could muster. "I definitely have a lot to catch up on, but it was a good start. It will have to do for now."
He hugged me and Phoenix and I instantly relaxed in his arms. Phoenix also felt a bit agitated after the whole thing.
"We're here!", he shouted as soon as the car stopped.
The driver opened the door for me and I stepped outside. Mike and Keyon were in the car behind us and I was quite happy to see them again.
Mathew grabbed my hand and he led me inside a fancy looking restaurant. When we got inside, I immediately recognised some of the staff members. This was probably one of the many many restaurants he owned in the human world.
A waiter sat us down at one of the tables and Mike and Keyon came to join us.
"Is that a smile I see on Mathew's face?"
I looked back and saw Eric. He still looked the same. In fact, he hadn't changed at all.
He came to Mathew and gave him a hug. "Kid, since when do you smile?", he asked Mathew. "You're usually a big old sour puss!"
Mathew laughed at him. "I'm smiling because Elizabeth is back" He gestured towards me and Eric's eyes went wide.
"Elizabeth! Where the hell have you been? Come here and give this old man a hug!"
I stood up and he gave me a tight hug. "Uhm, I've been around, Eric", I answered him. "This is Mike by the way. He's essentially like a big brother to me."
Mike stood up and shook Eric's hand.
I noticed that Eric didn't even say hi to Keyon, but Keyon didn't seem too bothered by it.
I was about to politely get Eric to say hi to Keyon, but I was stopped by a high screeching voice that gave me flashbacks of short pink skirts and pink high heels.
"Matty! Matty!" Megan came running to Mathew and lunged herself in his arms.
A growl ripped out of me before I could stop it and they all stared at me. Eric and Megan even looked scared.
Eric seemed to understand the situation so he politely excused himself and left our table. Mathew flicked Megan's hands off of him and glared at her.
"Elizabeth is back. Yay", Meg said sarcastically.
"Matty, have you told her about the wedding?" She looked at Mathew like she was actually expecting him to say yes and he wasn't correcting her. He was just looking at me like a deer caught in headlights.
Megan continued talking when Mathew didn't answer her. "Matty and I got back together a few months ago, Elizabeth. After a long night of passionate lovemaking, we decided to get our act together and make things right again."
She stretched out her hand and showed me the biggest pink diamond ring on her hand.
I wanted to vomit. Had Mathew and Megan been having their on and off again romance these past few years? Phoenix was whimpering in my head. She wasn't angry. She was hurt; we both were.
We watched as Mathew grabbed Megan's hand and stormed upstairs with her.
For a second I couldn't move. Surely this couldn't be happening. He wouldn't get back together with her. He wouldn't leave me here like I was the girl who secretly pined after her best friend even though he was just too good for her. The scene playing out infront of me was all too familiar. I had lived it so many times, but it never hurt like this. This had to be some sick joke.
"I want to leave", I heard myself say. My voice was hoarse, but I wasn't crying. I wouldn't cry. A man who makes a fool out of me wouldn't get my tears. Phoenix, on the other hand, was a different story. She was angry, but she was also in pain. She didn't want to leave. She wanted to stay here with him so I decided I would suck it up for the both of us. I would leave here with the little dignity I still had in tact.
I watched Eric and the other servers. I could tell by the way they were looking at me that they knew about Mathew and Megan. None of this was a surprise to them. In fact, I was the surprise. I was the one who was intruding on the happy couple.
"Liz, it's not what you think", I heard Keyon say. "Just give the boss a chance to explain."
I looked at Mike. He was just as angry as I was and already had the car keys out.
I started walking out of the posh restaurant. I needed to get out of here.
I got in the car and Mike started it. Before we could drive off, Keyon got in at the back with me.
"You are not to tell Mathew where I am, Keyon", I growled at him. "That is an order."
He looked a bit reluctant, but he quickly nodded his head and we drove off.
Phoenix's pain was slowly turning into pure rage. We started remembering the whole Megan and Mathew endless saga. They always fought and always got back together. That's what they do. They always get back together and that's what they've been doing these past three years.
While the thought of another man touching me disgusted me, he was here getting it on with the love of his life.
I started punching and clawing at the car seat. I was so angry. I felt so stupid.
Mike and Keyon were just staring at me. They didn't dare to try and stop me.
"For how long has she been back?", I said through gritted teeth.
"Liz, she's not back", Keyon replied. "They're not together."
"Just answer my question, Keyon."
He gave a deep sigh. "It's been about two years; give or take."
I promised myself I wouldn't cry over him, but I could already feel tears threatening to stream down my face. It wasn't sad tears though. It was tears of anger. I was so f*****g angry at myself. I couldn't believe I had been that stupid.
"Where do you want us to go, Liz?" Mike asked me.
I was about to answer him, but then I realised I didn't actually have anywhere to go. I had no home of my own; not in the human world and not in the magical world either. I was so fixated on following the golden path that I neglected to build a life for myself and create something that belonged to me and only me.
I realised now that I had allowed myself to fall in the trap that so many she-wolves fall in - falling in love and then thinking that everything would always be sunshine and rainbows; believing that your mate would always choose you and stay true to you.
I had met so many lunas who were rejected by their alphas and went from owning an entire pack to having nothing. They were confronted with a rude awakening as they watched the man they love shack up with the next hot thing and watched as someone else take their place.
I promised myself I would never be like that. And yet, a few days with Mathew made me forget all those things. It made me forget that in the magical world women rarely had any power if they weren't attached to a man.
I may be the Werewolf Queen, but Mathew is the King. If he rejected me, I would be nothing. However, if I rejected him, he would still be king.
This was another brutal reminder that I had forgotten to make a life for myself. I didn't own anything and I had absolutely nothing to my name. Mathew had built an entire kingdom and made a name for himself in both the human world and the magical world. If he left me for Megan I would be left with nothing and nowhere to go.
"Liz", I felt Keyon's hand on mine. "I know that look. I've seen that look."
I looked at him with the tears streaming down my face. He couldn't possibly understand what I was thinking right now.
"I've seen that look on my mom, Liz", he continued. "I saw it when my dad betrayed their bond and left her for another."
I furrowed my brows at him. Maybe he did understand what I was going through right now.
"Your'e thinking about the fact that Mathew's title does not depend on you being his mate. However, your title depends on having him as your mate. You hate the fact that you're a woman in the magical realm right now. You feel alone and you feel like you have no power. Am I right?"
