Chapter 6

1366 Words
Mason Yes, I heard the rumors. And I know those are not rumors. King Richard is a childhood friend, and ever since we were little, he has always been fascinated by the existence of human mates and hybrid children. Human mates were a myth at the time, as we had never heard of such mixed couples... Not that we spent too much time with humans to be able to sense our mates in the first place! Our sacred rules insisted on separating the supernatural world from the humans... and considered revealing our existence to humans as a crime punishable by death! So, chances are, if anyone found themselves with a human mate, they could never accept the mating bond… unless they wanted to be judged for treason. However, when Richard became king, he installed special laws, applicable only in the UK… Laws that encouraged us to socialize with humans and to seek human mates. Those special laws are in direct contradiction with the Sacred Law and that is why they are only applicable in the UK, where King Richard has a close relationship… and direct authority on the packs. If a werewolf has a human mate, our King promises them a position in the Royal pack on the condition the newly mated couple move to the Royal grounds. Since then, I have seen many werewolves come forward with their human mates. No one knows what happens when the human mates come to the Royal pack, and the concerned werewolves never leaked any information. At least not openly. However, I know that the rumors are true. Richard is encouraging procreation among our species, and I do not know why. Despite our close relationship, this is one topic he never discussed openly with me… Although I trust my sources, I have never seen a mixed child up to this date. Nor have I seen human mates either... Not after they moved to the Royal pack. Does that mean mixed children do not exist? Or are they confined to the Royal grounds? I might have investigated a bit further if I did not have a rebellion on my hand! “So, what are you going to do, Mason? You reject her?” “I am not sure, yet.” “For what it is worth, she is one sexy human. When she was wriggling under me, I can tell you I enjoyed the…” “You finish that sentence, and it will be the last thing you say, Grayson.” I growl. “ You sent our Beta to feel our mate up?!” Callum growls menacingly. “Calm down, Callum. You know very well what the instructions were. Verify whether she is a human or a supernatural being. If latter, they bring her to me. If the first part, they silence her.” What did I do to the moon goddess to end up with a pathetic human mate?! “You know that she is absolutely stunning, so stop pretending.” Callum berates me. He is right. Despite the physical distance, I clearly saw her thanks to my werewolf eyesight. And she is unbelievably beautiful. When her big black eyes were locked with mine, they felt like doors to her soul. I saw how frightened she was, I felt her despair… And when her long curly brown hair was flowing around her face, it gave her a charming aura. But this does not change the fact that she is human… And humans are not allowed to live among us… Nor to even know about our existence! Unless I inform Richard and move with her to the Royal Territory… Relinquishing my pack! I snort! Yeh right! I would never do that for a werewolf mate… and I sure as hell would not do that for a useless human mate! I will have to reject her. But not now… My mate raises many questions… Questions that could end up crucial to our rebellion investigation. I give Grayson the books in my hand. “What are those?” he asks me, looking at the books. “Read.” “What the…Mason, what are those books doing here?” he asks, his voice on edge. “They were with my human mate.” “What? What is she doing with books on werewolves? She is human.” “I have no idea. Check the second book.” I instruct. “What about it?” he asks me. “The heresy of Supernatural being. This is from the Ancient and Rare books collection at the university’s library.” “How do you know?” “It is written on the other side of the cover.” “But, aren’t those books supposed to be protected from any access?” “Yes, except that those books are accessible to the library staff.” “She works at the library.” Grayson gasps. “Yep… This is the only explanation.” “But still, those books are not supposed to be checked out of the library. Aubrey is not doing her job properly. Should we inform the King?” This is another of Richard’s special rules in the UK. All ancient books mentioning the supernatural world must be protected from unauthorized access, whether they are humans or werewolves or any supernatural being. No one should have access to those ancient books. And to enforce this rule, he either bought those ancient and rare collections or put his trusted werewolves as library curators. Aubrey is one of our childhood friends as well. We grew up together and Richard trusts her and considers her, just like me, a close ally… I, on the other hand, am less trusting. She is my friend, undoubtful, but I know that she is not a fan of Richard’s rules. I notice it in her reactions and her discussions when those special rules are mentioned. But this does not mean that I believe Aubrey could betray Richard. No, of course she could not. She is just not scrupulous when it comes to applying those laws. “No, we will not inform Richard. If my mate is a library trainee, she could have broken the rules without Aubrey’s knowledge.” “You are hiding a lot of things from the king, Mason.” “Yes, I know.” I know and I am not proud of it. I will not inform him about my human mate… Nor will I inform him about the special reading interests of this human mate… Nor will I tell him about Aubrey’s shortcomings. Grayson sighs and shakes his head. “First things first. What are we going to do with Keith? This was our only chance to catch him, Mason. He rarely comes out of his pack”. “And he does not allow anyone to enter his territory. Not even the king.” I add. “So, what are we going to do?” Keith has been a thorn in the king’s side, for sometimes now. He refuses to attend any meetings outside his pack, he does not welcome anyone inside his pack and his pack members are confined just like him in the pack territory. I still remember when I reached out to meet him, he declined the offer due to sickness. When I reached out again, a couple of weeks later, he declined due to other commitments. And he has been declining my requests for months now. Until lately, when he has been seen with his inner circle lurking around the campus… Searching for something… Or someone. I look at the books in Grayson’s hand… Are those two events linked? Why is my mate reading about werewolves? What made Keith leave the safety of his pack to come over here? What was my mate doing here in the middle of the night? “We are going to investigate.” I take the books from Grayson’s hands, bend down, and grab one of her high heel shoes, then I walk towards the forest. Human mate, here I come. ~*~*~Author's note~*~*~ Hope you like where this story is heading :-) Next week is very busy at work, so next update will be on Sunday. sorryyy xoxo
