Chapter 9

Cody's POV "How the hell am I supposed to know I thought she was in the house that you guys so stupidly burned down. Now the firemen and the police are on their way. Amateurs." Devin scoffs "Do you really think you scare me? I've been hanging out with Thirteen these past few days and she's terrifying when she's angry. "Shut up Devin." You read my mind Chase. I glance over at Jason who keeps scanning the area for some way of escape. His eyes meet mine. 'Well?' I mouth and he shakes his head in reply. Just great...our only hope is if Thirteen made it out of the house. Not like she'd actually help us anyway. "I'll ask you again, where is Thirteen?" he sneers. He's obviously in charge and obviously pissed off with Thirteen for some reason...join the club. I've come to the conclusion that this is entirely her fault. He paces around in front of us in a slow threatening manner and to be completely honest if I knew where she was I would've sold her out already...maybe we'd finally be rid of her. I'm kind of hoping she is stuck in the raging fire behind us. A slight kick from Devin causes me to turn to him. He gestures with his head to the street. I look at where he gestures. All I see are seven men in the street. Congrats Devin, you've officially lost it. Wait seven? Weren't there eight? I get my answer as Thirteen creeps quietly up behind the guy farthest back, one hand goes over his mouth and the other plunges a dagger into his throat. His body goes limp and she begins to drag him back behind another car. She repeats this four more times effectively killing six of the eight guys standing in the street...now what about the other twelve standing in front of us? She stops in the middle of the street and seems to contemplate what to do next. Her eyes find mine and she gives me a salute before turning and disappearing from sight. She reappears carrying a large duffle bag. She moves silently across the street and opens one of the previously guarded cars. Is she leaving? I watch as proceeds to toss the duffle bag inside and then she herself slips in and closes the door as quietly as she can. But it doesn't really make a difference considering the raging fire less than three yards from us is loud enough to drown out her actions. She starts the car and begins to drive. She is leaving! I'm going to kill her when I get my hands on her. My thoughts are interrupted as the barrel of a gun is pressed into my forehead. "How about you?" he speaks, "Do you want to tell me where she is?" with pleasure. "She just killed six of your men and drove off." He spins around along with everyone else to see whether or not I'm bluffing, it takes him all of two seconds to realize I'm not. The anger shows on his face plain as day. "Hey boss man." What are you doing Devin? "Have you ever been hit by a car?" We all to turn to stare at Devin like he's grown another head. "No." he states aggressively. "Have you ever been hit by one of your cars?" "No." Devin, you're annoying him. "Well will you do me a favor and let me know how much it hurts?" I stare at him in disbelief...until I see the shining black metal surface heading towards us with the speed of a freight train. The car crashes through the mailbox, doing a fishtail swerve, stopping mere inches from us as it successfully knocks all the other men to the ground. Thirteen jumps out and tosses a small hand grenade in the direction of the rest of them before turning towards us and unlocking our handcuffs one by one. "Get in, I'm driving." She orders. I wasted no time in jumping to my feet and dashing around the car, slipping into the passenger seat as Thirteen slid into the driver's seat. Devin, Chase, and Jason all crowd into the back with Devin in the middle. As soon as the door shuts, she floors it. "Put your seat belts on." "You can't be as bad of a driver as you are a pilot." I retort, to which my answer is the swerving of the car as she makes a sharp turn, almost crashing through another house. The tires on the left side rise slightly off the ground and the ones on the right make long black skid marks on the asphalt. "I stand corrected." She shoots me a nasty glare as she grips the steering wheel and yanks it to the left causing us to swerve yet again. "I'm trying to avoid the cars." She snaps icily. "What cars!? We are on a clear road the only cars you need to avoid are the parked ones! Is something wrong with your-" I'm cut off as big black SUV rams into the right side of the car, completely smashing the doors in, and even causing the windows to c***k. Thirteen hits the gas pedal hard causing the car to lurch forward, just barely missing the other three SUVs following the first one. "I didn't think I pissed him off that bad." Thirteen mutters quietly. I turn to glare at her. "Didn't piss him off that bad?" I hiss at her, "What exactly did you do?" "None of your business." She grits out before turning the car onto a freeway. Her knuckles turn white as she grips the steering wheel tightly, her eyes constantly darting back and forth between the mirrors at the five SUVs trailing after us. The blaring sound of a ringtone pierces through the car. I watch Thirteen pull her phone out of her pocket. "Shit." She mutters before handing the phone to me. "What do you want me to do with it?" "Answer it and put it on speaker, I can't exactly hold it right now." She demands as she weaves in and out through the masses of cars. I stare at the unfamiliar number flashing on the screen. "Is it Zero?" "Just answer the damn thing!" She shouts. I hit the little green button. "Thirteen," the voice on the other end is cold and calculated, and happens to be the guy from before...how covenant. "I must admit I didn't expect you to pick up." We all say nothing as we stare at Thirteen, waiting for some sort of reaction but she just looks forwards, eyes on the road in front her with her usual blank look on her face. "Well you know me, always doing the unexpected." She retorts sarcastically. His humorless laugh sounds through the car, "Tell me Thirteen, how's your wrist?" I glance at Thirteen, my eyes unknowingly travel down to her arms watching as her hands seem to tighten around the steering wheel and instinctively pull down on the sleeve of her shirt. Funny, I had never noticed anything wrong with her wrist. "How're your eyes?" she snaps back. There was nothing wrong with his eyes when I saw him. "Nothing why do you ask?" I can hear the confusion in his tone. "Cause if you don't call your men off right now, I'm going to take my dagger and carve your eyes out." "You shouldn't make empty threats Thirteen. It's beneath you." "Who says it's an empty threat?" He laughs. "Nadam se da ne vezan za svoj novi tim." I stare at the phone in confusion, that's not any language I've ever heard, and judging by everyone else's face they've never heard it either. "I'm not." She answers and we all turn to stare at her like she's an alien. How does she know this language? "Dobri. Ne bismo htjeli ponoviti posljednje vrijeme sada bi mi?" "Pazi što govoriš." I look at her in shock as that incomprehensible language passes through her mouth, coming out as a growl. "Why?" he taunts, his language going back to English. Hers doesn't. "Jer to ce biti tvoja smrt." She reaches her hand over and ends the call. We continue to stare at her. "What?!" she finally snaps. "What language was that?" Devin asks. "Why so you can go look up my entire conversation with that creep on Google translate? Uh, no thanks." She says "Besides most of that discussion was in English." "Yeah but I get the feeling the important parts weren't," Jason replies. "So?" I groan "We're on your team, don't you think it would be better if we were all on the same page?" "No." I run my hand over my face in exasperation. "Cody hand me those knives in the glove compartment will you?" she asks. I pull open the compartment to see four identical looking knives with rather big handles. I grab them before handing them to her. "These knives are freaking heavy. What the hell are they made of?" She places the knives in her lap before speeding to the freeway exit closest to us. "What are you going to do?" Chase asks and Devin leans forward so far in his seat that he's practically sitting in front with us. "I'm going to blow them to kingdom come." She jerks the steering wheel to the left on to a slightly less used road leading away from the nearby city. The SUVs follow behind us easily. "Cody." I turn towards her, "I'm going to need switch places with you." I blink, I think I heard her wrong. "We're in the middle of a street," I state seriously and she rolls her eyes. "I am aware." "You're kidding right?" "Nope." "How in the hell are we suppose-" "Oh let me" Jason interrupts and shoves Devin out of the way pushing himself slightly into the front. "Say the word." He says, his eyes never leaving Thirteen. "Now!" she shouts as she turns in the seat and jumps into the back, Jason jumps over her at the same time and glides effortlessly into the driver's seat taking the wheel. "Move over." Thirteen tells Devin as she takes a seat in the middle. She reaches over and opens the sunroof before placing her feet on the edge of mine and Jason's seats and pushing herself up through the hole. She grips the knives firmly in her hands before throwing two in the hoods of the SUVs. "Well that's fantastic you managed to hit the hoods of the cars, not anything important, that'll definitely slow them down." I snap at her and she glares back. The sounds of gunshots echoes through the air. Thirteen ducks her head inside the car as the bullets fly over her head. One of the knives slips from her grip and slides below the seats. She stands quickly and throws the third knife into the hood of one of the other cars. "Hand me the knife I dropped." She orders. I reach my hand under the seat feeling around for the knife. I finally locate it and pull it out. "Is that thing beeping?" Devin asks as he eyes the knife warily. Thirteen looks at it "s**t the timer's gone off." "The what?" Jason questions. "Is this thing a bomb?!" I shout suddenly panicking, why the hell would you leave a bomb in the glove compartment of a car? "Just the handle." She shrugs as if it's nothing still holding out her hand for it. "Would you rather watch it from here or in here?"
