The annual summit was a notoriously loud gathering of Alphas that's bound to end up with at least three feuds and one Alpha being on the verge of dying. It never ends peacefully.
Silver Howl pack being the host only meant one extra thing, which was a hell lot of people making their way into their borders. It wasn't just the Alphas and their companions who came to the host pack's territory. The two day event becomes a whole amusement park and anyone with enough money could attend the summit as if it's their grandmother's backyard.
Stella ripped apart one of her very very old, unusable tshirts and used the thin cloth to cover up her wound.
"Did you forget about me?"
Serena took her by surprise. Stella nearly dropped the wipes due to the sudden voice in her head.
"I didn't." Stella answered calmly.
It was already surprising that Stella was able to keep such a calm exterior after yesterday's incident.
Serena paced in her head. Stalking around into the consciousness like the predator that she was.
"It was you who went silent." Stella said bitterly. "Which is understandable."
"It is not. A rejection is a big deal and to be very honest, this pain should keep you immobile for days. And me too. I am shocked how you are able to get up and move like this. Even me."
"That's how it is for me. I have to do what's expected of me even if I'm in a half dead state. Isn't it better to just get over the pain as if it doesn't exist?"
That didn't make any sense to Serena, but she didn't argue with the logic.
Stella and Serena formed a bond later than normal. There were so many things that this wolf didn't know about her human. Emotions and memories were not easily understood.
Stella was done disinfecting and lay down on the hard bed which barely fit her after the age of 12.
As her blue eyes swept over the small window, it gave her a beautiful scenery of the full moon opening up behind the curtains of clouds. Consequently, a series of low howls were heard.
Those who had the time were able to shift under the moonlight and those who didn't have to sadly wait for the next full moon after a fortnight.
Shifting wasn't a necessity anymore. It was a form of comfort for the pack. As their shifted form was synonymous to freedom.
Stella closed her eyes and took deep breaths but the sound didn't drown out.
"Why don't you let me out?" Serena asked.
The wolf surely wanted to be let out, but the human didn't even think about it.
"I don't want others to know about you. I will try to let you out some other time." Stella hoped for a compromise.
"Are you worried about them knowing that you have a wolf?" Serena put forth her guess.
"No. They must have found out when Austin recognised me as his mate. It's impossible to recognise a mate without a wolf after all. They probably don't care about that aspect."
Serena roared lightly. The sound of which tickled Stella's ears and made her smile faintly. As a pair that shared part of their souls, Stella was able to feel the distress coming from Serena.
Even after waiting for a while, the wolf didn't complain.
Serena was a particularly good wolf with an understanding nature. Although it was second nature for wolves to want to shift when the full moon appeared, she held back the desire and let Stella rest.
The restless night faded into a glorious morning. Stella like any other day dragged herself out of bed and started on the daily chores when Nancy's booming voice came from upstairs.
The bedrooms were lined up on the first floor. It allowed Stella to work in a fairly normal environment unless even one of them was awake.
Nancy came rushing down first and soon, the rest of them gathered after her call. The family sat on the living room couch to discuss the upcoming summit.
Nora yawned, "It's so early!"
"Not early enough!" Nancy pulled her hand and started to say, "A good number of Alpha's are going to be here soon. You need to make a good first impression on them..."
Titus seriously nodded along to her statements. Nathan was also in agreement with the plan.
Waiting for your mate can be a long journey in itself. It was not certain when they would encounter their other half. There were many people who were now taking the route of chosen mates. Everyone wanted to write their own destiny and what better way than to choose someone you fell in love without a pre made bond.
And surely not everyone was going to be paired with an Alpha or beta. Sometimes, they'd prefer others. To facilitate this, rejections have been making a huge number in recent years. Although frowned upon still, it has become a fairly common sight.
Stella's rejection was already written in stone due to her omega rank. Nora on the other hand was open to more possibilities. Her family wanted her to become close to an Alpha or at least the people around them. Anyone who can enter into the pack summit was bound to be wealthy and a part of the upper class.
"What if my mate is someone even better than them?!" Nora asked.
"All the Alphas will be here. In this world, there is no one better than an Alpha. If your mate is among them, well and good. If not, it won't hurt to be close to such people. Pick one and even if you have to compromise a bit, it won't hurt." Nathan explained.
Stella's hand slowed down in wiping down the counter. The logic was so crooked. Compromising in what sense exactly?
Nora glared at Nathan and asked, "You want me to become a mistress!"
"I didn't say that. Not all Alpha's are like that!" Nathan argued.
Nora sneered, "Yeah, maybe the new Alpha Asael isn't! That's because he's a burning potato that no one wants to be close to! All others are balding old men who want a bit of fun in their life with younger women despite having their own mate or wife at home."
"Well, you will get a lot back." Nancy said softly.
Stella has always been an outsider in their family. It was understandable to some extent that they hate her and do bad things to her. She couldn't understand why they were pushing Nora to do something so disgusting? She's their own family. Their own blood.
Although Stella had little experience of being in a loving family, she at least witnessed her father giving up everything for the sake of her survival.
This kind of thing was so selfish. It wasn't love. Their love was like plastic. It melted right off in front of burning materialistic benefits.
Stella served breakfast on time.
Serena remained quietly in her head most of the time so to not hinder the world.
"You should run away." Serena advised when she finally had some time to herself.
