/Ember’s POV/
“You know you can stay back a few more days if you want” Mom suggested as I get ready to go back to the academy after dropping my box in my car trunk. Mia had gone a few days prior and mom has been nagging me to go early so I could check up on her and see if she’s setting in just fine. She’s not even a kid why do I need to baby her?
“I’ll be fine, if I stay any more days I’ll only listen to how much you’re worried about her every night, I think I’ve had enough of that. Goodbye Mom” I said opening the car door to get in but the solemn look on my mom’s face made me hesitate.
“Goodbye and take good care of yourself” She forced me a sad smile and bid me off. I slipped into the car and slowly drove off to school. Things haven’t been great between my parents and me ever since Amber’s death, I don’t want to blame them and I hate that I do. It wasn’t easy getting to school and up to my dorm room undetected, since I’m trying to avoid bumping into people at the moment.
I don’t exactly hate it but the first week of resumption can be rather exhausting, everyone wanna talk about vacation and s**t, or maybe brag about the new stuff they bought during the break like anyone else cares, I’d rather not exhaust my energy talking all about that. While more than half of the school population is filled with werewolves from different packs, they are witches from different covens as well, which only means lots of people’s got stories to tell, and different one at that. Being the son of the school founder, it’s only normal that I’m popular, I’m even more popular because of the annoying title I got, ‘The dormant alpha’. I almost jumped out of my skin when the door burst open to reveal Lauren, my cousin, best friend and unfortunately, roommate.
“Ember!” He beamed excitedly the moment he laid his eyes on me and then clumsily fall into me as he try closing our distance.
“Get off me man” I grumbled grumpily trying to get him off me since he was suddenly all over me. “And I’d appreciate it if you stopped barging into the room like that.
“You cold-hearted bastard, it’d be nice if you could be…y’know, a little nice, you haven’t seen me throughout the whole goddamn vacation man, so chill a little,” He said moving back. Though Lauren stay in the pack with the rest of us, aunt relocated to Utah a few years back for her residency since she suddenly decided out of nowhere she wanted to be a doctor, so, Lauren as well as his dad and sister often stay in Utah for vacation.
“The vacation is only a few weeks long, you think I’m bothered by that when I’m stuck with you throughout the whole semester, hell nah” I shrugged before finally abandoning the box I was unpacking before Lauren got back.
“That may be true but shouldn’t you be happy? Seriously, Ember, you should treat your future beta a little better don’t you think?” He furrowed before getting his bag which he had dropped by the door to unpack. “Anyway, how’s your vacation been? Any luck finding your mate yet?” Lauren asked but I ignored him since I’d rather not answer his question. “I guess not” He mumbled.
“You sound like you’ve found yours?” I snickered and he smirked making a weird face. “You can’t be serious?” I thought aloud since I knew exactly what his look meant. He’s found his mate, and the motherfucker didn’t say s**t to me about it during vacation.
“Oh yes I am, her name is Venessa, she’s among the first years…Mom convinced her to enroll in the academy and she did, I had no idea she’d get in, I trust in her ability of course but I’m just so proud of her” The lovestruck expression on his face was more sickening than I thought. I made a disgusted face and turned away from him. Mate huh? I have no idea if I’m ever gonna get mine. “I think the orientation is today right? You should seriously drop by, who knows, you might just find your mate among the freshmen as well-
“I’ll rather not” I replied before falling back into my neatly arranged bed.
“Why not? Having a mate is the most exciting and-
“I don’t wanna hear it” I groaned and Lauren sighed.
“You still haven’t been able to shift either have you?” Lauren has such sympathetic look on his face it was almost annoying. I wish he wouldn’t look at me with eyes so full of pity. Not you too Lauren, don’t pity me! Lauren's bottle green eyes narrowed down at me in sympathy and regret that almost felt like guilt. “I’m sorry for bringing it up man-
“I should go check on Mia” I stood abruptly from bed and quickly approached the door before I get anymore of Lauren’s sympathy speech which will only make me more miserable. Yeah, my life sucks but I don’t need them all reminding me. The walk from the dorm to the school's main ground without my bike or car is 15 minutes.
“Hey, Ember-
“Hi, Ember-
“Hi, Alpha” Greetings left and right which of course I returned with a smile and a wave of my own. While everyone seems to know my name, they’re a handful of people of people that I actually do remember their names.
“Ember?” I heard Mia’s voice just as I turned to take the other hallway since I was avoiding running into my ex-girlfriend. “What are you doing sneaking around like a little thief?” She furrowed after snatching her arm and drawing her into the closest lecture room.
“I wasn’t sneaking around, I was only tryna check up on you, how are you-” I froze. Something smells familiar and-
“How nice of you to join us Mr.Anderson but I’m sure you took this class last year, or will you be joining us again this year,? I don’t really mind either way” Mr. Pakinson who was in charge of general studies grinned at me from the lecture stand and I was forced to slowly turn towards the rest of the class facing me. Unfortunately for me, the random classroom I picked to shove my sister in, happened to be her very first class.
“Mr. Pakinson it’s-” That scent again. My eyes roamed the seats as my sister snatched her hand from me and walked over to take the front seat which most people always hate to occupy in a lecture room and she also happened to be sitting down right next to someone very familiar. My heart was pounding, her baby blue eyes were distracting, while they looked still and motionless, I could never forget them.
“You need to stop him” Her small teenage voice rang in my head. “He’s gonna die” I flinched as her face flashed in my memory, overlapping with her real figure occupying the front seat with Mia. ‘Daisy’ I thought.
“Mr. Anderson, would you like to take the class?” I was jolted out of my reverie.
“I’m sorry Mr. Pakinson, I’ll leave” I awkwardly apologised before anxiously leaving but I couldn’t help but stand in front of the door, watching through the glass lining in the middle of the door frame…Daisy, she’s back to the pack? When? I couldn’t help but wonder why her mere appearance is making me so restless? No, it wasn’t me…I wasn’t the restless one, Aiden was.
“Aiden” I called to my wolf, hoping by some miracle he’d respond to me but nothing came back but deafening silence that shattered whatever hope I had of hearing him again. Because of my dormant wolf, my senses are dulled, while it might be better than that of a normal human, it isn’t really nice for a wolf, especially not an alpha. I should stay and check if that was really Daisy, I decided but halted before I could turn. “What can I possibly say to her once she comes out?” I mumbled to myself since things didn’t exactly end well the last time we met.
“You have something to do with it don’t you?” f**k, the looming regrets from the actions of the 16-year-old me, I shouldn’t have done that, I thought running my hands through my head in total frustration, but I still waited, I wanted to talk to her, even if it’s to apologise for my stupid actions four years ago but things didn’t exactly go the way I wanted.
Being in the very row of seats, I thought perhaps, I’d see her early amongst the crowds of freshmen gushing out of the lecture room, buried between them is her bright ginger hair that shone amongst the brown, blacks that surrounded her, she wasn’t looking back…she looked hurried, it almost felt like she was tryna run!
