“No!” Curtis sounded flustered. “No, I—no. I’m trying to warn you.” He paused. “That came out wrong, too.” It did. Lyndon said nothing. Curtis seemed to shut up after that, and for a few minutes Lyndon assumed he was figuring out how to say whatever it was he wanted to say, but then ten minutes went by, and another ten, and Lyndon was through with his coffee and no closer to learning what was going on. But he was a hell of a lot farther from home. “Curtis.” Lyndon didn’t want to think about how little sleep he’d get before his next shift even if he turned the van around now and went back the way he’d come. “You need to give me something.
