The next day during her lunch period, she told Elle she needed to see if Luke was in the science classroom again since she didn’t see him in the lunchroom.
Elle looked disappointed but said, “Go. I’ll see you later in class.”
“Thanks,” Lizzie said, grabbing her backpack. “You’re the best friend I ever had.”
“And don’t you forget it,” Elle said, grinning at her.

She headed up the stairs to the science classroom and peeked inside. Just as she’d hoped, Luke sat at their desk, munching on something while reading his book.
Opening the door, she knocked on the doorsill. He stopped chewing and looked up with a surprised look on his face.
