Prologue

I was walking around in a cold, eerie forest, the atmosphere creepy and forbidding. The air around me was cold and chilly, giving rise to goosebumps on every bare inch of my skin. I hugged myself tighter, rubbing the soft fur of the sleeves of my coat, my fingers desperately trying to steal any warmth from the material. The trees were tall and close together, the canopies they formed blocking any moon light from seeping inside the dark, frightening jungle. The soil was slightly wet, thus my feet sank inside it with every step I took, leaving foot prints behind as traces of my presence. What was I doing there? I had no idea. I was just walking around, taking a stroll as if it was the most normal thing I'd ever done. Even though the darkness and the forest had always frightened me, at that moment it felt weirdly safe. It was like I knew that nothing could harm me in that jungle, as if I knew I was being watched over by a very powerful deity. Someone who would move heaven and earth, just in order to keep me safe and protect me. I heard the sound of leaves rustling behind me, and I swiftly turned around to find nothing but the dark forest. I suspiciously looked around, still somehow feeling calm and composed, but when I turned back around, I looked up to find two gleaming golden eyes staring down at me. For some reason the stranger's eyes, although very unnatural, looked welcoming and friendly, and I didn't step away from the person, standing rooted to my spot. By his height I could tell that the stranger was a male, and the glow that his eyes produced only accentuated a small part of his face: his eyebrows and his nose. "Who are you?" I whispered, softly, feeling somewhat mesmerized by his gold orbs. "Fate," he replied, and then 'Sorry' by Justin Bieber started playing at a deafeningly high volume, snapping me out of my entrancing dream.
