CHAPTER 2

NORA “Mom, what do you mean that I’m not safe there? What are you not telling me?” I don’t really understand what’s going on with her, she’s all shaken up, and she’s not really making any sense right now. As soon as I asked that question, she immediately changed her posture and tried to hide her anxiety. She exhaled and shook her head. “I….ahem … I had a dream. You were in trouble and…… Oh Nora, just listen to me this once please. Don’t go?” I sighed. “Mom, you are just being paranoid, that’s all. I’ve never left your side before. That’s probably why you are having dreams like that.” I know my mom. She doesn’t get along with dad, and she’s probably scared I’ll get attached there and not come back. That’s not even possible. I grew up here and this is all I know. I won’t trade it for anything else. “Nora……. “ “Shhh mom. It’s just a dream, nothing else, and I’ll be back before you know it.” She shook her head, ready to argue, but then closed her eyes and breathed out hard.” “Fine. If you say so.” She reached out and pushed a strand of hair out of my face. “Please just be careful and call me every minute you get the chance.” I laughed at that. “Mom! I’m almost nineteen now, you still expect me to call you every second?” She signed and placed her glass of water on the counter, and handed me a cup of coffee. “I know you can’t make it a day without your coffee.” “Thanks mom.” I looked at her carefully, to see if she was really okay. She was more beautiful with each passing day. I got some of my good looks from her. She looked at me all serious then. “I’m serious about you calling though. That way I’ll be at ease.” Well, if that’s all she’s asking for, then so be it. “Alright mom, I’ll call you every chance I get, even though I know you’ll call me regardless of asking me to call.” I took the cup and sat on the stool, sipping my coffee. Then my phone buzzed. A text message from Emmy, my best friend, who is also coming with me on this trip. TEXT MESSAGE. Emma: “Girl! Where the hell are you?” Me: “Woke up late! Where are you now?” Emma: “At the goddamn Airport!” I laughed at that, I had to. She’ll be so pissed right now pacing around the airport. Me: “Sorry! I’m on my way now, I’ll be there in a jiffy.” Emma: “You better get your ass here now! You owe me free lunch.” Me: “Girl we are traveling. Remember?” Emma: “I don’t give a s**t! You are still buying me lunch or dinner or whatever to make up for being late.” Me: “Says the late comer expert.” Emma: “Well I’m not the one late right now, so get your ass here. Now!” I grabbed my things and started rushing to the door. “Mom! Get your car keys. I’m already late and Emma is at the airport already.” My mom walked behind me, holding my suitcase that I had forgotten to bring along. “Stop forgetting your things, dear.” “Sorry mom. Let’s go.” ****** My Mom dropped me off at the airport where I met Emma. I was already so late but just in time for checking. We sat at the restaurant of the airport whilst we were waiting for our flight. “How is your mom?” Emma asked as she placed her phone on the table. I looked up from my phone and answered, “Well she was a bit paranoid when we said our goodbyes. I don’t know what’s up with her though. At first, I thought it might just be that she’s jealous that I’m going there to be with dad for a while. But slowly it’s been bothering me that there is more to her fears than she lets on.” Emma frowned. “Oh, that’s interesting. Did she tell you why she was scared?” “Well, she said she had a dream about me being in danger.” Emma suddenly burst into laughter. “What? That’s hilarious. A dream?” I rolled my eyes at her. “I’m being serious here, Emmy. I’m really feeling anxious at the moment.” She raised her brow, and gave me a confused look. “ You can’t possibly believe that s**t. Dreams happen. If all my dreams were to ever come true, I swear to God this would have been a nightmare on Elms Street or the f*****g Halloween movie.” I couldn’t help the laughter that erupted through me. “You and your goddamn horror movies. I just hope to God none of it ever comes true.” She sighed and released a breath. “I hope not, because I swear to God if it were ever to become real, then you are in it too. Because you are always part of my dreams. Both of us always running away from monsters.” she said, with an exaggerated sigh. I threw a piece of chips at her, and we both burst into nonstop laughter. “Hell no. Don’t ever dream about me in your messed-up fantasy dreams.” “Well, I can’t help it. Dreams happen. Just like your mom’s dream, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will come true. She loves and cares for you. For god’s sake, you are her number one priority. So it’s just normal for her to dream about you.” Emma is right. I should stop thinking about such things. It’s getting in my head. I grabbed my orange juice and took a sip of it. That’s when I noticed someone staring at me behind Emma. A woman. She’s pretending to read a magazine, but I’ve caught her several times looking straight at me, but I only now confirm she’s looking right at me, no one else. I grabbed Emma’s hand just as the operator was announcing that it was time to board our respective flights. Emma looked up at me. Noticing my sudden discomfort, “What’s wrong, Nora?” I leaned over to her and whispered, “Someone is staring at me.” “Who?” She turned to look, but I squeezed her hand. ''Don't look." ''Why?" She glared at me. I knew she was obviously dying to turn around and see for herself. I rolled my eyes. ''Because she will know that we know she's looking straight at us." She snorted. "I'm sure she's only looking at you." “Whatever. I don’t know. But I’ve caught her several times looking right at me.” “Is that all?” Shocked, I looked back at Emma. What does she mean by that? “Nora. You need to understand that your beauty always stands out. You are one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. Long black hair almost down to your hips, unique hazel eyes, perfect in all the right places. Girl, you have a body to die for.” I blushed, hard. I couldn’t help it. I’m not ignorant about my good looks, but it always feels strange when people list it down like that. Almost as if I was from a whole different planet. I shook my head. “That doesn’t justify anything. The way that woman is staring at me is f*****g creepy. As if she’s watching every single movement I make.” Emma turned around to look and I immediately tried to stop her again. “Don’t look at her, or she’ll realize we caught her looking.” Emma, being Emma, ignored my warning and turned around and looked anyway. The woman immediately shifted her gaze to her magazine. “You are just reading too much into this. I’ve personally caught a few people looking your way and this is not the first time. You get those looks all the time that I’m almost jealous of you", she sighed. "When you are around, guys don’t even seem to notice me.” I looked at her face to see if she was joking or not. But the pout on her face and hidden grin behind her lips confirmed what I already knew. She was joking just as always. “Stop making me uncomfortable, Emma.” She snorted and moved closer. “You have a body that will give most of these plastic curvy social media models a run for their money, and you are all real girl. All natural, no filters, so be proud.” She winked at me and we both laughed. **** We got onto our flight and took our seats in business class. Emma whistled as she looked around our surroundings. The emirate flight was indeed luxurious, especially the business class. "I'm going to have a blast." She said. "Please, once we are seated, I don't want to be disturbed. I just want to eat and relax.'' I laughed and shook my head. Both my parents were super rich, and I have everything i need or asked for, and that's one of the reasons I want to become independent like my mom. Even though my dad is wealthy, my mom was no less. She is one of the most respectable judges in America. I was just about to switch off my phone when it buzzed with an incoming text from my dad saying. Dad: “Don’t come to Yildiz. Wait for me in Istanbul once your flight lands. I’ll meet you there. Please darling, do not come to Yildiz.” What the hell? What's going on? I never even told him I was traveling there to surprise him. Did mom tell him? Why don’t they want me to go there? What secret lies in Yildiz?
