VALENTINE
I sneaked myself into the furthest corner of the library while holding the new fiction book that caught my attention. While the whole pack is busy celebrating the twin alphas' arrival, I trespassed the university's library just to pass the time through books.
I'm alone, but at least it's peaceful. A good way to celebrate Valentine's Day.
After cooking every single dish and working myself to death, I just bid goodbye to Alpha Jackson and left. I don't want to stay in the pack house because I'm sure that several people will see me there. Fortunately, the alpha let me go and didn't ask where I was going.
I savored the silence around me as I flipped through the pages of the novel I'm reading. It's about a female superhero who came from a poor family. A mysterious rock fell in front of their house that gave her fortune and superpowers.
I sighed. How I wish this thing also happened in real life.
Only the noise made by the papers can be heard inside the library. I'm sure the other pack members are all in the pack house for the celebration. It's a good thing that the university is far from the pack house. I won't be able to hear their noises.
I don't know how many minutes or hours had already passed, but when I felt my back aching again, I stood up to stretch myself.
"Val," someone's voice called for me.
My stretching stopped midway. My arms are still up in the air, and my back is arched as I look around to see where the sound is coming from.
I peeked at the window to check, but there's no one. I made sure before staying in the library that there's no one here but me.
Am I hearing things?
I continued stretching and just bent down to reach my feet. I thought that I might be just tired; that's why I'm hearing something. I shrugged the first noise off and went back to reading the novel. I need to finish this before the university opens, or else I won't be able to read it again.
"Val," the same voice called for me.
This time, I'm sure that it's not just a part of my imagination. With furrowed eyebrows, I stood up and stomped my foot.
"Who are you?!" I shouted, trying to scare whoever was away. My eyes looked around each corner of the library to check if there were any pairs of eyes looking at me.
Holding the candle I used to light up the room, I reached for the switch and clicked on it. The moment the light bulbs started opening one by one, I prepared myself to see another being.
But the whole was already lit up, yet there's still no one but me.
"Huh?" I asked myself. I opened the library door and peeked my head outside. The hallway lights are open, so it will be easy to see another person.
"I must be tired," I muttered to myself while closing the book with hesitation. "I should just go home and sleep."
"Val."
I threw the book because of shock. The voice became louder now. It's not an imagination anymore. It was so clear and loud, like it just came from my head.
Am I going insane?
"No, you're not," the same voice replied to me as if it could read what's on my mind. The voice sounds like it came from an older and more mature woman. "Don't be afraid. I am you. I am the one you're waiting for."
My hands flew to my ears, blocking the noise I'm hearing. I don't understand what's happening.
"Blocking your ears won't do any help," the voice growled softly in my ear. "Don't do that, Val. Embrace me. I know you had been waiting for me."
Slowly, I removed my hands and rested them on my sides. With a mind full of confusion and fear, I asked, "Who are you? Are you in my brain?"
"I am you, Val," the voice repeated once again. "I'm Nova. Your wolf."
Everything seemed to stop after I heard those words. My wolf? Did I hear it right?
"Yes, Val," the voice answered me once again. "I am your wolf. Are you happy that you already have me?"
My mouth opened wide as I tried to stop myself from screaming. I let out a silent scream — if one could imagine how I did it. My feet stomped quickly on the ground before I jumped because of excitement.
"Really? I have a wolf now?" I asked while leaving the library and running towards the ground floor that will lead us to the open area of the university.
"That's right, Val," Nova spoke to me with amusement as we stopped in the open area. "Now, are you ready to shift? This will hurt a little bit, but I promise; it's all worth it."
With hands shaking with happiness and excitement, I nodded with determination. "I want to shift! I want to be a wolf!" I exclaimed. "Show yourself to me, Nova!"
In a snap, I felt an immense pain crawl through my spine. I felt my joints cracking, my bones stretching, and my muscles hardening. I felt myself getting bigger as the changes in my body ripped my clothes into pieces.
I let out a loud and groundbreaking growl as my skin started to grow black and silky fur. My fangs stretched out, and in just a blink of an eye, my senses heightened to the point where I could smell everything around me.
"Let's run and show our strength, Val," Nova spoke to me before speeding our bodies towards the roads of our territory.
The wind hit my face as we liberated ourselves. The rough texture of the ground making contact with my paws felt so surreal. I can see everything all at once. Even the pack house located hundreds of meters away didn't escape my sight.
Something glowed from my chest, and when I looked down, I saw the same mandala mark I have on my arm resting on Nova's chest. It's glowing with white light, and I can feel my body getting better, as if the scars of years of punishment just vanished.
"They can't hurt us anymore, Val," Nova whispered to me as we approached the pack house. She was ecstatic, too. I can feel her heart beating with happiness. "We are stronger than them."
"I'm strong," I repeated her comforting words that gave me confidence.
"Yes, and you're special. Don't let them tell you otherwise."
In the middle of the freedom I just tasted, an intoxicating smell teased my nose. It was seductive, and I felt that it's drawing me towards its direction.
Without giving it a second thought, Nova ran towards the center of the pack's territory, where the biggest fountain of wishes and the pack's house are located.
The more we got nearer to the pack's house, the stronger the smell became. I feel like I'm under the influence of drugs, and tasting whatever that smell is coming from is the only way to satisfy me.
I was high. I can't think of anything but that smell. When we arrived at the fountain of wishes, Nova shifted back to my human form, leaving me naked in the middle of an open space.
The smell is still there. I didn't mind if I'm getting cold or if I'm naked from head to toe. I followed the seductive smell until two shadows emerged from the pack house.
Two of the most manly men I saw in my entire life stood before me. Their eyes scanned my body with lust and adoration. One of them couldn't help but to lick his lips while the other one sniffed in the air, like he could also smell the same thing.
My eyes glistened with something foreign. That emotion is too strong to ignore. Heat crept up to my bones as one word escaped from my lips.
"Mates."
