Chapter 1
Skylar’s pov
I was at my wits end trying to find anew secretary. Right now, we had more work then we could keep up with. I didn’thave time for all this. I was losing work being hire doing these interviews. Itwas a complete waste of time. The women that were coming in seemed moreinterested in getting me into bed then the actual job. They were completeairheads. In this job there was no time for flirting and being an air hear.Stuff like that could get one of us hurt or killed even. I wasn’t looking for adate. I wanted someone that was going to work hard.
The guys were here on lunch break andwere all laughing and joking around. They needed to be working not here messingaround checking out the women that came in. I heard them making pig noises andlaughing so I went to see what they were being so loud about and to tell themto leave and get back to work.
I walked out and saw them laughingand pointing at this very voluptuous sexy woman. She looked like she was aboutin tears and ready to walk out. How dare these man that work for my company actlike this. I was beyond angry. I would not stand for them acting like this. This was not how you treated a woman. I needed to do something about this.
"What the hell do you guys thinkyou're doing? Unless you all want to be fired right now, I would apologize andshut your damn mouths. Get back to doing your job before I decide you’re notworthy of having it!” I yelled.
They hurried to apologized and left.I was so embarrassed and felt I needed to apologize as well. She came closerand I got a really good look at her. My mouth went dry and I became speechless. She was gorgeous. Why would the guys say such cruel things about her?
"Thank you for that. I am TiaI'm here for an interview with someone named Skylar."
I almost fainted hearing my name fallfrom her lips. I kept looking at her mouth. Watching it move without reallyhearing her. Then I looked from her eyes all the way down. She was dressed upand looked beautiful. Her voice was mesmerizing.
"I'm Skyler please come in to myoffice and have a seat."
Hearing that I was who she waslooking for her caused her to blush and look down. It was like she wasembarrassed that her possible boss had to come to her rescue earlier. I didn’tcare if she was qualified or not, I wanted to give her the job just, so I couldsee her every day. I needed any excuse I could find to get closer to her.
She showed me her resume and it waspretty basic. She admitted she knew nothing about construction, but she hadworked as a receptionist once before. She seemed like she really wanted thejob. She wasn’t like the other women that had come in her saying they wantedthe job. She was here to work not to try to get with me. For some reason thatmade me sad.
I told her everything looked good andthat she had the job. I was tired of losing work by being here looking for areplacement secretary. He needed to get back to work. She would be trained, andhe felt she would work hard. She was almost in tears hearing she got the job. Iwondered what her story was. Why was finding a job bringing her to near tears.I wanted to get to know her more.
I had her feel out forms and talk toMaria since she would be training her. Maria seemed happy that I finally hiredsomeone. She was up there in age and ready to retire. Tia and her were talkingand laughing. Maria seemed to really like her. I had a good feeling she wasgoing to be a great asset to my company.
Since everything was covered at theoffice I decided to go and check up on my crew. I still wasn’t happy with them. They needed to know things like that would not fly. She was now an employee andI wouldn’t have her being harassed. I pulled up and saw a few of the guys justsitting around. What was wrong with them lately? Did I need to hire an all newcrew as well?
My father never had this kind ofproblem. I would still have his crew, but the men were ready to retire sincethey were all older. They did help me out for a few years but now they are allretired. As I walked up the men saw me and acted like they were hard at work.Like I didn’t just see them doing nothing.
I walked up to them and told them ifanything happens like it did earlier, they were all fired. They just looked atme like I couldn’t be serious. They didn’t want to push me on this. I told themI hired Tia and there would be a no tolerance clause on them treating her withdisrespect. I would not have them ruin my family’s name. I wouldn’t hesitate tofire anyone that stepped out of line. I wanted people here to build up mycompany don’t take it down.
I left them there to finish up thejob and headed back to the office. By the time I got back Tia was gone. Mariasat me down and said she felt with some training that Tia would be very good atthe job. She felt she would be a good fit if I didn’t let my crew run her off.I told her there would be no chance of that happening. I wanted to make this asafe place for everyone that worked for me.
I decided to head home early. That’ssomething I just didn’t do. I couldn’t get anything done because I keptthinking about Tia. I decided to go and visit my mom since she has beencomplaining that I never come around anymore. I felt bad about that. I neededto be a better son.
I pulled up to my mom’s house and sawthat she was out front planting flowers. I didn’t realize how much I missed heruntil I saw her. She looked up as I approached and smiled. She pulled me into ahug. I missed hugs like this.
We went inside and had a cup ofcoffee and talked. She asked how work was going. I told her that I hired Tiaand how the guys had treated her. She was not happy with hearing that. I toldher I handled it. She said she was proud of me for how I was going abouteverything. Hearing that always made me feel good.
I stayed for dinner because my mominsisted that she needed to feed me. Saying I looked to thin and asking if Iwas eating right. Telling me I needed a home cooked meal to fatten me up. Mymom thought everything could be fixed with food. Once I got home, I took ashower and got ready for bed. I couldn’t wait to get to work tomorrow and seeTia. Things would definitely be interesting from now on.
