Addison’s POV
“I can’t believe we’ve never done this before,” Gabby squealed as she grabbed the bottle of champagne pouring herself another glass. “Do you want this?” she asked holding it up. “Or do you want something else?”
“I don’t know what else there is,” I shrugged. “Remember I haven’t done this before,” I pointed out while taking a sip of my glass.
“Let’s go to the bar and find out then,” she said while putting down the champagne and grabbing my hand dragging me all the way to the bar.
There was a line almost as long as the one outside but as soon as we got there one of the bartenders noticed us and nodded towards the end of the bar. I looked to Gabby who just shrugged and pulled me with her.
“What can I get you two?” he asked nicely leaning slightly over the counter to be able to hear us over the music.
“I would like a mojito with extra lime and a tequila sunrise for her, double shot,” Gabby said in a serious tone.
“Didn’t we just skip the line?” I whispered looking back at all the people we had just passed, some of them looking at us with annoyance.
“Yeah so?” she asked. “You are aware of who you are aren’t you?”
“Don’t even remind me,” I sighed and focused on the guy making our drinks.
“Listen up girl, it might not always be fun, I sure know it isn’t when you are home, but in cases like these it isn’t bad to be the mafia princess,” she said while nudging me in the side. “Lighten up a bit, will you?”
“Sure, okay,” I chuckled as I got my drink.
I looked at it a bit skeptical before taking a small sip.
“Wow, this is really good!” I said excitedly. “A bit strong, but good.”
“Good I knew you’d like it,” she snickered. “You look like a tequila girl to me.”
“I can make a batch and send it to your table?” the bartender offered as he overheard over conversation.
“That would be nice,” I smiled.
I took the straw and placed it between my lips. The feeling of the cold liquid hitting my tongue was not only cooling in this very heated place, it was also very tasty. Not just from the orange juice that was easy to taste, but it also tasted like freedom.
Freedom, huh. If this was what it tasted like I never wanted to go without it.
We drank and we danced, we laughed, and we talked. This night was perfect, and I didn’t know why I never thought about it, but I should have. Of course, I should have thought about it, hell I should have even known. Because my night was about to go from being perfect to complete chaos.
I was at the bar getting us another batch while Gabby was in the bathroom when suddenly someone yanked my arm.
“The hell do you think you are doing?” I slurred to the guy standing in front of me.
“I should be asking you that very same question,” he roared.
It took me a few tries to regain my balance as I blinked and looked up at whoever had just interrupted me.
“Damien?”
His hands were shaking, and his eyes were shooting lightning my way. I should have been scared like anyone else would have been, and normally I would have felt a little frightened, but not now.
“Get your filthy hands off me, you i***t!” I snapped as his grip tightened on me. “Who do you think you are huh? My dad?”
“No, and you should be happy that it is me and not him who found you here because otherwise, I’m not sure you would have made it out of here alive,” he huffed. “Let’s go!” he said as he started to drag me along.
“Let go of me!” I yelled and watched as a familiar face appeared behind him.
“Is everything okay here?” Mika asked looking from me to my brother and I silently begged for this to turn out peacefully. “Dude let go of her arm,” he said as he noticed the tight grasp, he had on me.
“Yeah, dude, let go of my arm,” I said using Mika’s words.
“Mind your own business Mika,” Damien said while rolling his eyes.
“Technically I am,” he said which made Damien turn around and look at him like he was about to explode.
“And how so? Do you know her?” Damien asked.
“Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do,” he said as he went past Damien and took my hand. “How about I walk you home yeah?”
“That would be nice,” I smiled. “Thanks, Mika.”
“Mika? Okay, so you are on a first-name basis?” Damien snickered. “Bro you have no idea what you are getting yourself into,” he said with a threatening tone and looked Mika dead in the eye.
“And how are you to know about that?” he hissed putting himself between me and Damien.
“Because…” Damien snickered. “She is my sister. My twin to be exact, haven’t noticed the resemblance? Same face, same eyes and curly hair,” he said with a grin. “Mika, meet Addison, Addison Demarco.”
I watched in silence as Mika turned to me. The look in his eyes was filled with shock.
“You…” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me that you knew him?”
“Why would I?” I laughed. “I mean you never asked, and I didn’t even know that you knew him,” I said and folded my arms over my chest.
“This is why you didn’t want to tell me your last name huh?” he said as he let go of my hand and took a few steps back. “Now how about that,” he muttered and walked away.
“Come on!” Damien said as he once again took my arm. “I think you had enough fun for one day.”
“And I think you should go to hell,” I muttered and yanked my arm from him. “Back off, I can walk perfectly fine by myself.”
The walk to the car was silent. I had already thrown Gabby a text apologizing and telling her that I would explain everything tomorrow, but something told me that she already knew.
“Are you going to tell dad?” I asked once we were in the car.
“I already did,” he said coldly.
I was in so much trouble. Not only did I sneak out and disobeymy dad’s orders, but of course I had to bump into Damien and of course he would call our dad. He was such a snitch.
“I just wanted one night Damien!” I yelled. “One stupid night on my own and you ruined it!”
“Well, you ruined my night too by being there! I didn’t go there with the intentions to babysit you or the intentions of leaving my friends hanging because I had to drive your sorry ass home! Do you have any idea how mad dad would have been if he found out that you defied his orders and then learned that I had seen you and didn’t call him?” he yelled back.
“I don’t care! I have covered for you so many times when you snuck out and the one time I am literally begging you to act like my brother, you decide otherwise!” I snapped. “Do you have any idea how hurt I am because of that? All you care about now is your stupid training and dad and the stupid family business! You have completely forgotten all about me, either that or I must have done something very wrong to make you hate me this much,” I said, whispering the last part.
I think my words must have hit a nerve because he suddenly focused more on the road, and he had a guilty look on his face.
“I don’t hate you,” he sighed.
“What?” I said as my head shot up.
“I… I don’t hate you,” he repeated this time louder. “I am protecting you.”
I didn’t know what to respond to that. It’s been so long since we have had a normal conversation that I forgot how it worked.
“You have a funny way of doing that,” I huffed. “Both you and dad.”
“You might not understand now, but you will eventually,” he said giving me a half-smile. “Now, let’s go home.”
Of course, dad was waiting for us at the door. The look he had on his face was unreadable and at the same time I got out of the car, he turned around and walked away. I looked towards the ground and walked to his office where I knew he would be waiting for me.
I hesitantly walked in, trying to prepare myself as much as I could for what was to come.
“Take a seat,” he said pointing to the chair I was standing behind.
I sat down and put my hands on my lap as I began fiddling with my fingers. He rested his forehead on his fists and let out a deep sigh before he looked up at me. For a second, he looked slightly confused as he noticed that I wasn’t able to sit still.
“Why are you looking so nervous?” he asked.
“I’m not,” I said. “I’m just… I’m trying to prepare for the scolding you are about to give me,” I said slowly to which my dad sighed.
“I’m not going to scold you, Addison,” he sighed. “I’m just…” he trailed off. “I have been talking with your mother and she told me that I am being a little too hard on you when it comes to me worrying about you and your safety,” he said while scratching the back of his neck.
I sat there not knowing what to say as I continued to stare at my dad. I hadn’t known what to expect but I didn’t expect that.
“I have been especially hard on you, and I admit that I have treated you differently than I have treated Damien, and…” he trailed off as he was looking at something over my head.
“And it’s time you hear the truth,” a voice said from behind me.
I turned my head to see my mom standing in the doorway. She offered me a small smile before she came into the room and closed the door behind her.
“The truth about?” I asked not following what was going on.
“The truth about why we are so protective over you,” my dad said and looked at my mom.
