Howls and screeches reverberated in the air as the chaos ensued. Alex was forced to use the machete in such close combat, and the blade sliced through the creature's flesh like butter. No matter how many he killed, its comrades didn't seem deterred, and they still kept coming. Alex chopped another one of them in half and shouted, "Stay behind me!" The moment it took him to scream that to me, another group of monsters reached us and started gnashing their teeth. The fluidity of Alex's movements and the smoothness of his attacks prevented the creatures from doing any serious harm, but I could see that he was less confident holding the machete than the rifle. There was simply none of his quiet assurance while fighting hand-in-hand with them, and it wouldn't be long before they overwhelm us
