Chapter 32

Isla stood in front of the mirror, smoothing out the wrinkles in her sundress. Her reflection stared back at her, eyes filled with determination and a hint of sadness. Today was the day she had dreaded, the day she had to face the truth and break Clark's heart. She knew it was the right thing to do, but the weight of the decision pressed heavily on her chest. The kiss with Teddy only confirmed it. Taking a deep breath, she walked out of her room and down the stairs. Henry was in the kitchen, as always, making breakfast. The familiar aroma of pancakes filled the air, a comforting smell that normally made her feel at home and a sense of security. But today, not even the comforting smell could ease her nerves. "Good morning, Isla," Henry greeted, his voice warm and cheerful. He looked up from the stove, his eyes filled with a mixture of pride and concern. "You look lovely today. Big plans?" Isla forced a smile, trying to keep her voice steady. "Morning, Henry. Yes, actually. Clark and I are going to talk. There's something important we need to discuss." Henry's expression softened, and he nodded understandingly. "I see. Well, I hope it goes well. Remember, Isla, follow your heart and do what feels right for you." "Thanks, Henry," she said, feeling a lump form in her throat. She appreciated his support more than words could express. "Sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest choice." With one last deep breath, Isla walked out of the house and headed towards the Orchard where she knew Clark would be. He was always an early riser, tending to chores before the heat of the day set in. As she approached, she saw him repairing the finch around the orchard. His strong, familiar silhouette brought a wave of emotions crashing over her—love, guilt, and a deep sense of loss. "Clark," she called out softly, her voice barely above a whisper. He turned around, his face lighting up with a smile when he saw her. Clark couldn't help but check her out. "Hey, Isla. You look beautiful." "Thanks," she replied, her heart aching at the thought of what she was about to do. She walked up to him, her steps slow and hesitant. "We need to talk." Clark's smile faded, replaced by a look of concern. "Is everything okay?" Isla nodded, but the words caught in her throat. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "Clark, I... I think we need to break up." His eyes widened in shock, and he reached out to touch her arm. "What? Isla, why? Did I do something wrong? I can do better. I can be better if you need me to." "No, Clark," she said quickly, shaking her head. "It's not about you. It's about me. You're going to college in the fall, and I want you to feel free to do whatever you want, to experience everything without feeling tied down. I'd feel guilty if I held you back." Clark's expression was a mixture of confusion and hurt. "But Isla, I don't want to be free. I want to be with you. You're the only girl I've ever loved, the only girl I could ever love. I don't want anyone else." Isla felt tears welling up in her eyes, but she blinked them back. "I know, Clark. And I love you too. But I need some time to figure out what I want, who I am. I don't want to hold you back, and I don't want to hold myself back either. We are both young and need to find our own paths in life." Clark's grip on her arm tightened, his eyes pleading with her. "Isla, please. We can make this work. I want to be with you, no matter what." The guilt weighed heavily on Isla's heart, knowing she was hiding the truth about her kiss with Teddy. But she couldn't bring herself to tell him, not now, not when he was already so hurt. "Clark, I need you to understand. This isn't easy for me. I care about you so much, but I need to do this for myself. If fate brings us together again... maybe we could give it another try, Until then I need to figure out what I want." He searched her eyes, looking for any sign that she might change her mind. But all he saw was the determination and resolve in her gaze. Slowly, he let go of her arm, his shoulders slumping in defeat. He knew when Isla set her mind to something it wouldn't be changed. "If this is what you really want, Isla, I'll respect your decision. But it doesn't change how I feel about you. I'll always love you." Isla's heart broke at his words, and she reached out to touch his cheek gently. "I love you too, Clark. And I always will. But sometimes, love isn't enough. Sometimes, we have to let go to find ourselves." Clark closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his cheek. "I hope you find what you're looking for, Isla. And if you ever need me, I'll be here. When you find yourself and if you still want me, I will be waiting for you. I don't want anyone else." She nodded, her own tears threatening to spill over. "Thank you, Clark. That means more to me than you know." With one last, lingering look, Isla turned and walked away, her heart heavy with the weight of her decision. She knew it was the right thing to do, but it didn't make it any easier. As she walked back towards the farmhouse, she couldn't help but think about Teddy and the kiss they had shared. It had been amazing, and it had shaken her to her core. The rest of the day passed in a blur. Isla kept herself busy with chores, trying to distract herself from the pain and confusion that gnawed at her heart. She split and stacked wood in hopes that might wear her out. So many emotions went through her mind. If she stayed busy enough maybe she could forget. Henry seemed to sense her need for space and didn't push her to talk, for which she was grateful. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the fields, Isla found herself wandering back towards the shack. She needed to clear her mind, to sort through the tangled emotions that had taken root in her heart. The shack had always been her sanctuary, a place where she could think and dream without interruption. She sat on the small cot and it smelled like Teddy. Perhaps he slept there in hopes she would return. In hopes she would run back into his arms where she might belong.
