13 Landry led the way down the tight passage. It was so narrow that I had to skirt some of the torches that hung from the walls, and the men had to turn sideways to avoid their shoulders being singed. Soft plumes of smoke rose up from their flames and hovered over our heads. I swept my eyes over the rickety rafters and aged uprights that kept the place from collapsing in on us. The only things keeping the old wood from caving in were the cobwebs and rusted nails, neither of which filled me with confidence, but it did fill my mind with thoughts of how to duck and cover in case of a cave-in.
