NELLIE CONTINUED doing Johanna’s hair. While she pinned down recalcitrant locks and covered her creation with a jewel-studded hair net, Johanna thought that a lot of things suddenly made sense about Nellie’s behaviour lately. For example, Nellie insisting on moving the dressing room furniture because it was “much nicer than the spare room stuff”. She knew Johanna would see what she’d been up to, and had gone to great pains to remove the evidence, but couldn’t remove the windowsill of course.
It also made sense how Nellie had been so happy recently. Nellie deserved a nice young man. But if anything, it drove home to Johanna that she and Roald weren’t getting any closer to being a normal couple.
