Chapter 21

Hazel eyes Jeremy - This bloody suit is agonizing! - I growled while I tried to fix my tie. Rico kept his eyes on the road but I heard the soft chuckle. - It's for one night and for the bigger good, remember? - I rolled my eyes and angrily pulled down the blinder on the passenger seat to check my tie. It was better than before and that is enough for me right now. It was already dark when we arrived to the Sunset Pack's territory. In the invitation, Alpha Nicolas offered a place to stay for the night, but honestly, I'd chop my arm off instead of staying a minute more than necessary. Rico, on the other hand, was nervous about the party. I knew the reason so I didn't ask. I knew him as a brother. When I caught him a few hours before, looking at, at least ten different ties I knew it was all because of that human dancer. I must admit that she is really beautiful and kind. Luckily, Rico will still find his mate sooner or later. If that human makes him happy for now, I won't take this happiness away from him. "- What if he decides to make her his chosen mate? - Ulric asked in our minds. - I don't think that'll ever happen. Rico treasures the bond and the Moon Goddess too much to go against her wishes. "- And you don't? - he asked teasingly and my blood boiled for a second. My wolf was a really bold one for asking this but I scoffed. - I lost my fate in her decisions when she decided to take her away from me... - with this our little inner discussion ended. Just in time. Rico pulled on the road to the Sunset Pack's main house where there were already many other Alphas and their companions getting inside the building. We got out of the car and handed the keys to an Omega who parked them. Before we walked in Rico fixed his hair and tie one more time and asked. - How do I look? - I smirked at him and decided to enjoy myself just a little tonight. If that meant that I'd keep teasing my Beta, all might, well, sorry Rico. - Like a virgin... Touched the very first time! -Rico growled, and we put on our serious poker faces. Both of us were known as fierce and strong leaders. Whenever we had to attend any kind of event, where the other Alphas were present as well, we tried to keep the seriousness and our dangerous aura lingering around us. For now, this strategy has worked well for our Pack. Nobody ever dared to trespass our territory or start a war against us, except Nicolas's young pups. I recognized a few of them serving the drinks now and from the smell of their fear, I knew they recognized us as well. - Alpha Jeremy and Beta Rico! What a pleasant surprise to see you both here today! -Alpha Nicolas walked to us and extended his hand. I shook it and heard Ulric growling at Nicolas's sorry excuse of a wolf. There was no doubt who would win in one-on-one combat. Nicolas knew this as well, and he did everything possible to prevent that moment from coming. His Beta on his side wasn't half as composed and sneaky as his master. There were visible sweatdrops on Arnold's forehead while he offered us some champagne. The lights dimmed and Nicolas smiled at me before he said. - Alpha Jeremy, you just arrived in time. The show is starting. Enjoy your stay. Now, if you'll excuse me. - he said and walked away to mingle with the other guests. Rico stood next to me and discreetly poured onto a plant in the corner of the room. I was about to follow his example when the music started and my eyes met a pair of hazel eyes, I'd tried to get out of my mind for weeks now. She was stunning. I felt Ulric fighting his way to come to the surface. For a moment the feeling was mutual. I just wanted to grab her in my arms and run away with Carolina. Rico's eyes were fixed on Cherry and she noticed him as well blowing him a tiny kiss followed by a playful wink. The music started and the spotlight was on them. Carolina wore a black tango dress while Cherry had a similar one but in red. Both of their hair was held in a high ponytail. To the rhythm of the music, they started to sway their hips, held each other's hands, and performed a hot, insanely beautiful tango. Their long legs crossed and they moved in perfect sync. Carolina bowed to Cherry and the next time she did the same with her. I decided to slip down my drink and try to keep focused on the fact that she is a human, she is an exotic dancer and all I felt right at that moment was only because of the bond. Our eyes met many times during their performance. I didn't know if she was looking for me in the crowd or if this was just simply a coincidence... The song ended and the lights turned on again. Carolina and Cherry bowed and even if they were only humans, everyone in the room applauded them. I have to admit that she was really talented. Such a shame she chose this path. "- She had no other choice! - Ulric growled and I shrugged while I fetched another drink for myself. - We always have another choice. Humans tend to choose the easier one. "- I don't think that this is the easier way... - I got distracted by my inner talk and noticed that Rico had disappeared. I looked around the room and saw him dancing happily with his little human. I shook my head and walked out to the terrace to clear my mind a little bit. On my way out, I got stopped by a few allies who decided to take the opportunity of us being at the same event and discuss a few matters with me. After that, torturing small talk and schmoozing, finally, I was outside. We had a nice full moon which lighted the forest around the Packhouse. I inhaled the cold winter air and enjoyed the silence. I had to get out of the image of Carolina dancing and swaying on the dancefloor with Cherry. They were both beautiful, but for me, Cherry disappeared. My eyes only saw Carolina dancing around. I wanted to be the one holding her hand and, at the same time, I wanted to make her disappear from the Earth. I remembered how she talked back to me and that she had no fear in her eyes even when I hit the wall right next to her face. Also, Rico's words echoed in my mind, repeating that I wasn't good enough! For that pathetic human? I scoffed and growled out loud, throwing the glass I held in my hand against the wall behind me. - It doesn’t refer to a lot of good manners when someone harms the values of their host. -I was so lost in my thoughts, I didn't notice that I wasn't alone. I turned around but the voice was already familiar, just like her scent. Carolina was there with a glass in her hand leaning against the wall. She had a thick coat on and the same black dress she wore for her performance. I frowned at her and she rolled her eyes. - This is none of your business. - I said and fought against Ulric to keep my glance off of her. - Right. - she said and just kept drinking her drink. I couldn't hold back and said. - It is bad manners to get drunk while you are working as well. - I heard her footsteps approaching, and my hands clenched in fists while her mesmerizing scent got stronger. She leaned with her back against the railing and tilted her head. - Let me recite someone wise, but with a little lacking vocabulary. - she said and cleared her throat before repeating my words. - This is none of your business. - I felt a tingling sensation in my chest. - Anyway, I have better things to do than to freeze here with you. - she said and left her drink on the railing. - Enjoy the party, Jeremy. -she said and walked in. I grabbed her whiskey glass and sniffed inside. - Apple juice? - I said it out loud. That caught me off guard. I turned around but Carolina was already inside. I sighed and walked back in. There were many wolves dancing on the dancefloor, I spotted Rico still dancing with Cherry and also noticed Carolina dancing with Nicolas. Anger and jealousy woke up in me. I shook my head, Ulric growled in our mind. "- He is touching what is ours! - She is a human, and it's natural for her to dance with the host! - I reminded Ulric. "- His hand is upon her hand, where ours should be! - Ulric tried to come to the surface and between my own feelings and his anger I couldn't hold back anymore. I mind-linked Rico. - WE are leaving now! - Rico looked at me and asked while he stopped dancing. - What is wrong? - I didn't answer but his glance followed mine. He sighed and nodded. Leaving Cherry alone and he rushed to me. - Leaving so soon? - I heard Nicolas's voice behind me. He held Carolina by his side and I nodded. - As you know, we have a long journey ahead of us. Thank you for the hospitality. - I said and Rico was already by my side. Nicolas grinned. - What a shame, I hoped you'd enjoy what the party holds a little longer.- my eyes met with Carolina's and I felt like my heart was clenched in her tiny hands. - I've seen enough for my taste, Nicolas. Good-bye! - I rushed out with Rico in my heels. We jumped in the car and only when we were outside the gates he asked. - What was that?! - I shook my head. - Just drive.
