Fiona's POV.
Everything was spinning.
Well I'd say not really, but it sure as hell looked like it when you hadn't eaten for several hours and yet somehow still running about scrubbing at the floors, moving stacks of wood that I could only support due to diminishing amounts of werewolf strength in me.
I knew they didn't make empty promises, you could see it in their perfect faces that they meant every damn word when they'd promised to not feed me but what I hadn't counted on was how quickly my body withered after ten hours of running on whatever energy my wolf could spare.
I'd been woken up as early as normal by Giovanna, been deprived of a bath again because apparently I'd used up my one for the week when I was being prettied up for the Alphas, so I was walking around breathing in my own stink. She'd thrust a long sheet of paper into my hands and I'd stared at her in shock, she'd smiled and said they were my duties for the day.
Scrubbing, uprooting, cleaning every nook and cranny of the guest rooms… all sorts of unnecessary and absurd things specifically designed to make me as tired as possible. And it worked.
I was tired, to my very bones. But I couldn't complain and I certainly couldn't do anything about it. I barely had enough energy to talk, talkless of marching up to those bastards and giving them a piece of my mind.
No, if I tried that I'd collapse on my way up the stairs. It was a miracle I hadn't collapsed in the act of carting about buckets of water from the top of the tiny hill where the well was located to the bottom of the hill where the little wagon I would drag back to the manor was.
Walking up the steep hill was one thing, fetching the water was one thing but dragging it down while there chains at my ankles simultaneously weighing me down, it was bordering on torture.
And in the midst of all these I wasn't alone, not by a longshot. I had two guards tailing me at all times so running away wasn't an option, there were maids and ordinary wolves trailing in and out of the manor, some even lingered outside near the hill to relax and point at me mockingly as I dragged buckets up and down, sweaty and shaking with every step.
I looked at them from time to time. Desperate for someone to get up and offer me some assistance, but there was none, no outstretched arms, no offers of help, just the occasional and very fleeting look of pity when I'd tripped on a rock and spilled all the water in the bucket that was to be my last one.
I was tired, too damn tired, the only thing that kept me from actually collapsing was the memory of the Triplets, staring at me with mocking eyes, laughing at me and promising me that I wouldn't get any food today.
I grit my teeth as I tug on the wagon, dragging it over sharp rocks and twigs and digging my heels into the ground so I don't fall with every movement.
I curse those bastards under my breath as I tug and tug biting down on my lip and once again reopening the cut that had been inflicted when I'd previously chewed on it. What had once become a stress reliever was now a habit, my bottom lip was different shades of pink and red from the constant chewing I was doing, and the skin around my nails had been pealed off almost completely after having my hands in water and scrubbing most of the day.
It was probably vain of me to notice these with everything going on around me. But I knew I hadn't adapted to the life of a prisoner yet, I was unused to sleeping on hard beds, sweating profusely, having to use this much of the little strength I'd accumulated from my training over the years. It was all exhausting and difficult and I wanted out, but with this little energy there was nowhere for me to go, I probably wouldn't even be able to make it out of the manor with how much my legs were shaking.
"Uhm hi?" A meek voice calls out and I start, spinning to face the tall, olive skinned girl at my side.
I squinted at her, trying to slip out of the fog my mind was in and see her face probably but everything was still spinning and I felt like throwing up.
"Hi…" I replied, turning away from her and trying my best to move the wagon again. It was a lot harder to drag now that all my energy had been burned on that hill journey.
"Do you- do you need help with that?" She asks, shifting towards me a little. I stare at her with clear puzzlement in my eyes and she chuckles and points at the wagon. "Getting the water from the hill was my task, but since you got here Ms Giovanna said we should leave it to you on the Alpha's orders, but you look really tired and I feel bad because it was my job once and now you're stuck with it…"
I scoff and shake my head. "I'm sure you'll get in a whole lot of trouble for even speaking to me at the moment. Don't worry about it, I've gotten so far." I say all this struggling for air, standing for so long was starting to wear out my muscles and for someone that hasn't eaten all day and didn't even have energy to begin with I was starting to feel really faint.
She eyes me worriedly. "You're shaking, you were shaking when you took that bucket up. I haven't done anything all day so I don't really mind…"
I grit my teeth tightly and rest on the handle for support. "I don't need your help. It's my task. Your Alphas gave it to me, I can't get you in trouble just because I couldn't move a wagon."
She sighs then reaches past me for the grip of the wagon. "Just stand back, I'll finish it. Get started on your next task."
I shake my head and try to reach for the handle but she pushes my hand away. "You've done enough. I heard the Alpha's haven't given you any food. Just get working on your other tasks so you can get going, I don't mind." She says all this in a whisper tone.
"What about Giovanna?" I ask.
She shrugs. "She's probably off somewhere watching the warriors train, she won't even know. Now just get your stuff donez I'll get this back into the manor."
I smile, grateful. For once someone in this f****d up place had decided to show me a little mercy. Id honestly begun to wonder if all of them were as jaded and cold as this f****d up Alphas.
I watch her push the wagon away with ease, whistling to herself and occasionally smiling at a guard as they crossed paths. She wasn't gorgeous like Giovanna was, but she was pretty, smooth olive skin, long shiny black hair and the lightest brown eyes I'd ever seen, pretty, but not pretty enough that one would stop to look back at her.
I sigh to myself checking that off the long list Giovanna had given me and then I begin my walk back into the manor and into one of the offices. It was empty and dusty, I wrinkled my nose at the dirt streamed about and began my search for a broom.
Yes, this was the official house where the Alpha his family and select few officials were to reside but I'd never lived here, when my father had taken over as Alpha he'd built a new house further away from this one and closer to the people, I'd come here only once as a child with my classmates on a little excursion, the teacher was trying to explain the beauty of this place and how it was once the pride of this pack. All I'd seen was years of dust covering each and every inch of the abandoned place.
And now I was here again, cleaning off all that dust and trying my hardest not to sneeze as I do so. The dust is in my eyes and in my nose and the sting mixed with the current headache I was enduring was one of the most unpleasant things I'd ever felt.
I stop and press my back against the wall, staving off the darkness that was crawling into my periphery, also trying to stop my insistent sneezing. I wasn't asthmatic or anything but the combination of all these things did nothing to improve my condition, so one second I was standing, sweating and gripping the broom for dear life then the next I was on the floor, my ears were ringing and everywhere was dark.
