HATE

AMELIA’S POV I’m doomed! Alpha Damian’s piercing gaze seemed to look straight into my soul, searching for any sign of deception. My heart pounded so loudly in my chest I feared he could hear it. Finally, he sighed, and his expression softened ever so slightly. “I believe you, Amelia,” he said firmly, though a trace of hesitation lingered in his voice. “Though I hope I’m not making a mistake by doing so.” Relief flooded me. “No, you’re not, Alpha. Thank—” Before I could finish my sentence, Madison cut me off with a loud, incredulous outburst. “Alpha, you can’t believe her! She’s lying!” Madison practically shrieked, her desperation to sway him clear in her tone. “That’s enough, Madison!” Alpha Damian’s voice thundered, silencing her. “I don’t want to hear another word from you.” She recoiled as if struck, but the fire in her eyes didn’t dim. I could tell she wasn’t done. “Dad!” Jackson suddenly interjected, his tone laced with venom. “You can’t possibly believe this girl. What if she lied, just like her mother did?” His words felt like a dagger to my heart. Jackson. The one person I thought would defend me. The one who knew me well enough to see the truth. Yet here he was, tearing me down in front of everyone. “Son,” Alpha Damian said sternly, cutting him off, “I don’t want to hear this again. I believe Amelia didn’t do it, and you have no say in this matter.” His tone was final, leaving no room for argument. Jackson’s jaw clenched, his eyes flickering with frustration. The Alpha didn’t wait for a response, turning on his heel and walking away, Beta Alex close behind him. I stood frozen, unsure of what to do or say. Madison, meanwhile, was trembling with barely contained rage. Jackson turned to me, his face twisted in disgust. “Stay away from me, liar! I don’t ever want to see you near me again!” he spat venomously before storming off. The weight of his words crushed me. I wanted to cry out, to beg him to listen, but my throat closed up, and all I could do was watch him leave. As soon as he was out of earshot, Madison’s anger morphed into gleeful cruelty. She threw her head back and laughed, the sound grating and sharp. “Let’s see how you make Jackie believe you now,” she sneered, her eyes dancing with triumph. “You’ll never have him, Amelia. He’s mine, and I won’t stop until you’re nothing but a distant memory.” She flashed me a victorious smile and sauntered off. Her words echoed in my mind, each one like a fresh wound. Jackson hated me. Madison would stop at nothing to ruin me. And now, I was all alone. I stood there for what felt like hours, replaying everything that had just happened. My feet felt heavy as I finally turned and began the long walk home, my shoulders slumped in defeat. The house was eerily quiet when I arrived. The chaos from earlier was still there—the broken furniture, the overturned chairs, and the dark stains on the kitchen floor. I couldn’t bear to clean it up. It was a reminder of Mom, of her strength, and of my hope that she was still out there somewhere, fighting to survive. I couldn’t sleep that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Jackson’s cold sneer, Madison’s triumphant smirk, and worst of all, the blood. The endless trail of blood leading into the forest. My mind raced with possibilities, each one worse than the last. ‘Oh, Mom,’ I thought as I curled into a ball on my bed, ‘I hope you’re okay. Please come back soon.’ Tears slipped down my cheeks as I whispered silent prayers to the Moon Goddess. Exhaustion eventually overtook me, and I drifted into a restless sleep. The next morning, I woke with a heavy heart. I knew what was waiting for me at school—whispers, judgmental stares, and Madison’s lies spreading like wildfire. Still, I forced myself to get ready. I wore my simplest outfit—a plain gray hoodie to hide my face with it and black jeans—hoping to draw as little attention to myself as possible. But no amount of preparation could have steeled me for what I faced when I walked through those school gates. The whispers started immediately. “There she is.” “She’s the one who caused all that drama.” “I heard her mom killed someone.” “No, I heard she killed her mom.” Each hushed comment cut deeper than the last. I kept my head down, clutching my books tightly to my chest, and made my way to my locker. Madison was already there, leaning casually against the metal doors with a smug smile on her face. A small crowd of her friends surrounded her, their laughter echoing down the hallway. “Oh, look who decided to show up,” Madison said loudly, drawing everyone’s attention to me. “Amelia the liar, walking around like she’s innocent.” “Please, Madison,” I said quietly, trying to walk past her. But she wasn’t done. She stepped in front of me, blocking my way. “What’s the rush? Scared someone might find out the truth about you? About what you did to your mom?” “I didn’t do anything!” I snapped, my voice trembling with anger and frustration. Madison feigned surprise. “Oh, really? Then why did Jackie tell everyone you’re a liar? He said he saw right through your little act.” Her words stung more than I wanted to admit. Jackson was spreading lies about me? The same Jackson who used to stand up when Madison and her friends were bullying and sit with me under the big oak tree, sharing his dreams of becoming Alpha? I felt the tears coming, but I refused to let her see me break. Not here. Not now. “Stay out of my way, Madison,” I said, my voice firmer this time. “You’ve done enough.” She laughed. “Oh, sweetie, I’m just getting started.” Pushing past her, I headed for my first class, ignoring the stares and whispers that followed me. The day dragged on, each moment heavier than the last. Even Samantha avoided me throughout the day. By the time lunch rolled around, I couldn’t take it anymore. I found an empty corner of the library and sank to the floor, hugging my knees to my chest. Madison still managed to find me and I saw her coming with her friends and a smoothie. I dreaded seeing her but before I could leave, she dumped her smoothie on my head, laughed with her friends and left. I thought about Mom. About the rogues. About Jackson. And about Madison. I couldn’t let this continue. If no one was going to fight for me, I’d have to fight for myself. ‘Mom,’ I thought, clenching my fists, ‘I’ll find you. I’ll prove the truth. And I’ll make them all see who Madison really is.’ The bell rang, jolting me out of my thoughts. Wiping away my tears, I stood and walked back into the hallways. I wasn’t sure how, but I knew one thing for certain. This wasn’t over.
