Beep. Beep. Beep. The slow, rhythmic beeping of machinery intensified the pounding in my skull. I tried to open my eyes, but it felt as if they were glued together. An involuntary groan left my lips as I tried to move. My body felt like I’d been beat to death. Every muscle ached. Every bone felt snapped. My joints burned without any movement. Just then, a thumb ripped my crusted eyelid open, flashing a bright light into my iris. “What… the fuck.” My voice sounded scratchy and foreign, and I was in desperate need of water. The other eye was thrust open, and I fought to screw my lids back shut. It was too bright. “Good morning, Reaper. How are you feeling?” a voice I didn’t recognize spoke. You could tell they had a smile on their face. Something that I couldn’t understand given
