The preparations were worthless. There was no amount of preparation for what awaited us once our feet were on the ground. The air was thick and grey, tainted with ash and burning flesh. The smell, even beneath a gas mask, was probably the worst smell I’d ever had the pleasure of experiencing. “Stay close. Stay vigilant.
